No I think they are for All Souls Night when the dead are very close to us and the little lights allow us to see between them into the infinite. But that's just my interpretation Bear

On the topic of steel toe caps, I did once going search of steel-toe-capped riding boots, after one of the ruder horses at the stables decided that putting a hoof on my big toe (inside flimsy jodhpur boots) and sliding his whole body weight down it was a fun game for a Sunday morning.

I found some sturdier (though not steely) boots, taped the mortally injured toenail into place to give my toe at least some protection, and went on a riding holiday a week or two later...

I sometimes think that regular riders are immune to common sense. Self included.

In my continued quest to sort out the years of accumulated junk in my house I'm currently in a cupboard within a cupboard.

I've just found the reindeer that my mother made PPE for back in the 1990s! (I've covered the company name with a caramel wafer).

I hope Maud and Co enjoy their holiday - they are very hard-working, and deserve a rest.

Dh is still suffering from the Worst Cold Ever (TM), despite his patent remedy of chocolate Horlicks mixed with blackcurrant lemsip. I know - vile. He had to get up last night and go downstairs for more lemsip and honey, because The Worst Cold Ever has now left him with an awful cough. I offered him throat spray, but I fear I was not particularly sympathetic.

Magpiecomplex · 09/11/2025 12:28

Woley, he should think himself lucky you didn't offer him a space under the patio!

Only you could have a PPE-bedecked reindeer, and decide to cover the logo with a caramel wafer!

You can buy a soft toy bear in railway PPE, mainly from heritage line shops and websites.

I do not need it. I do not need it. I do not...<goes off to google>

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/11/2025 12:46

Ohhh lord - dh needs one of those bears - he’s worked in the rail industry his whole life. Thank you, @Chersfrozenface!

Swashbuckled · 09/11/2025 13:36

Hi @DeanElderberry

It’s my understanding that genuine Marmite DOES contain gluten. (I’ve just checked on the Tesco website and it contains wheat and barley).

However, supermarket brands tend NOT to contain gluten. I know Tesco and Aldi Yeast Extract are GF.

Perhaps you meant this. But I did just want to warn you, in case you didn’t 🙂

DeanElderberry · 09/11/2025 13:53

Thanks Swash. I've been trying to read round it, and it seems that the wheat traces are so low that I'm safe - it's an allergy, not Coeliac disease. I deliberately take normal communion hosts, partly to check the state of my reactiveness and partly because not doing so would make me feel like an agent of the antiChrist (this makes no sense, I know) and I don't come home from church wheezing and coughing, so I think (hope) I'm safe with the regular marmite. Which is good because I have three jars with a bb date of 2017, bought as a hedge against Brexit.

Swashbuckled · 09/11/2025 13:55

Ah, okay. If it’s not coeliacs you’ll be fine.

PHEW!

I love Marmite. 🙂

Boiledbeetlejuice · 09/11/2025 14:09

OMG.

My a-ha world tour scarf!

I'm just trying to work out how many house moves it's survived!

I'm sure it's because I'm not feeling very well and therefore a bit wobbly, and not at all because I'm a big softie.... this is so lovely it brought tears to my eyes, knittedsloth💙

Just checking in to let Bluestockingers know my flu has turned into viral pneumonia, with possibly a soupçon of bacterial as extra garnish. I’m currently in hospital with an oxygen cannula stuck up my nose. I made DH bring me in last night because I was coughing so much and couldn’t get my breath properly, and it was proper scary. Anyway I’m in at least today and overnight and possibly another day depending on how I feel. Because I still test positive for flu the doctors shuffle into my room in hazmat suits, which are these kind of crinkly floaty gowns that look like bad Halloween ghost costumes. On the bright side I’ve just had a cup of coffee and ordered oatmeal and a slice of toast for breakfast.

MyrtleLion · 09/11/2025 14:58

lcakethereforeIam · 09/11/2025 10:15

Mine weren't sparkly😔

I've been catching an AIBU in the sidebar (i think it's gone now) that's left me with the impression that a poster's brother wants them to have his dog for Christmas dinner! I really should have clicked on it.

I hope Maud and Co. will send us a postcard.

Clarice isn't doing a bad job at all. The chives on the scrambled eggs aren't as finely chopped as usual but otherwise top notch.

As I recall the OP didn't want her brother to bring the dog. I think she had nice floors and didn't want scratches or hair on the furniture.

She proposed he walk the dog then come round and leave the dog at home. He got the dog during Covid and works from home, and the dog is a constant companion, so thought she was being unreasonable.

I think these types of threads are usually disguising other family dynamics, and the OP is often oblivious to what is apparent to everyone else.

MarieDeGournay · 09/11/2025 15:01

Sorry to hear that, Britinme, I hope you feel better soon💐
And wouldn't it be wonderful if the oatmeal and a slice of toast for breakfast.
were delivered by some friendly smiling gerbils?Smile
Maybe some of the figures in hazmat gear are actually a whole lot of gerbils standing on each other's shoulders...

So sorry you're poorly in hospital, Brit. Fingers crossed it's not a bad dose of pneumonia and you're able to go home soon.

DeanElderberry · 09/11/2025 15:02

Oh Brit.

I suppose at least you're being looked after, but that sucks.

(((((hugs)))))

MyrtleLion · 09/11/2025 15:28

I'm so sorry you're unwell, Brit. I hope you can rest and get better soon.

This is the Christmas stocking I knitted yesterday (short row heel) which might cheer you up. I modified the pattern to knit in the white accents and made loads of mistakes that I covered up in the weaving in.

I'm going to make one each for the Walrus and his DD. I did mine first so they get the better versions. I bought two balls of each of the three colours and one of the white. The pattern nicely used only one ball because I forgot that using the white would mean using less of the colour, and also I think I'm going to need another ball of white because it used way more than I expected.

I am sorry you aren’t well, @Britinme - that sounds scary and unpleasant. Hopefully you will recover quickly. There are some really unpleasant bugs doing the rounds.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/11/2025 15:40

Hmm - repeated use of unpleasant - poor construction - I cover my face in shame.

The gerbils have arrived to assist in your recovery.

They are being extra cautious.

Sorry to hear about the pneumonia Brit, that sounds exceedingly boring and nasty. Hopefully you can amuse yourself by trying to work out which hazmat suit is the one with gerbils in it.

Hmm - repeated use of unpleasant - poor construction - I cover my face in shame.

I'm getting flashbacks of a standard letter I had to send out that was drafted while I was on maternity leave. It had 'necessary' repeated three times in two consecutive sentences. It was impossible to get it changed because it was written into 'the procedure'. As you can imagine parts of the Darlington testimony from the make-works was very difficult for me, even second hand.

Pales into insignificance though. @Britinme Flowers feel better soon.

Eta that Aha scarf! Did you have trouble finding it Beetle? Were you hunting high and low?
