Hobbycraft employee badge - no terfs, no Tories

Another example of why bringing your whole self to work is a terrible idea.

Hobbycraft seems to be busy trying to mitigate the fallout, presumably because they know which demographic spends the most money there.

EXCLUSIVE: Perthshire designer 'ordered to leave' Dundee Hobbycraft shop after transgender rights badge row

Crieff woman Rebekah Chapman claims she was subjected to "intolerance and nasty slogans" after complaining about a staff member's "no terfs, no Tories" badge.

They don't want almost half the population to shop there?

That is one strange business model.

zanahoria · 27/10/2025 18:39

I have never voted Tory in my life but that part was dumb too

MarvellousMonsters · 27/10/2025 18:42

No Tories I get, but the No TERFS is deliberately inflammatory.

‘She claims the manager told her to “read a biology textbook”. ‘

he should take his own advice.

PastaAllaNorma · 27/10/2025 18:45

Foolish move, pissing off women of a certain age who make up a hefty proportion of their customer base. (Yes, I know anyone can be GC, but we skew older)

Jan039 · 27/10/2025 18:47

I can imagine some silly kid coming in with a badge like that but what kind of manager would think that was acceptable or professional especially in a customer facing role?

FreddysFingers · 27/10/2025 18:48

Staff who work in ANY customer facing organisation should leave their political and personal beliefs at home, work is work, not somewhere to try to campaign for something you believe in.

PatsFishTank · 27/10/2025 18:49

No one should be wearing a badge at work proclaiming their political beliefs. The no Tories comment is equally problematic. Opinions aren't facts.

ItsCoolForCats · 27/10/2025 18:53

Yeah, it is appallingly unprofessional. Just do your job and leave your beliefs at home.

It's a daft badge, but not really worth causing a scene over. Whatever happened to internally rolling one's eyes and moving on. I'd have just paid for my shopping and left.

I don’t get the no tories bit either. I don’t expect shops to choose to only serve people with specific political views. Daft.

I was being slightly flippant, because I think Tories are vermin. But yes, the whole badge is inappropriate for work.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/10/2025 19:13

Every person who has ever voted conservative is “vermin”? Or just Tory MPs?

Oh I would love to be told to "read a biology textbook" by one of these gender addled types. Because I have indeed done so.

I think people who refer to other people as vermin really tell on themselves.

frostedpixie · 27/10/2025 19:33

Wow! I guess Hobbycraft can afford to lose customers. They'll certainly not be getting my business again.

I'm not a Tory, but no tories is just as offensive and absurd on an employee's badge as no terfs. It's a travesty.

NebulousDeadline · 27/10/2025 19:35

Oh dear Hobbycraft, I had Christmas shopping to do and other providers of crafting materials are available.
They claim to be undertaking an internal investigation - hoping to sweep it under the rag rug (are those a thing now?).

Really?
You think a business should allow their staff to wear badges suggesting that certain demographics are not welcome in their store? In this particular instance, who they vote for? In a Democracy? So if this Hobbycraft assistant had worn a badge saying 'No Trans. No Socialists' ... that would be acceptable?
Because as a Socialist, I think not.

Vermin?! Ffs, grow up.

Dehumanising people just because they disagree with your political views is beyond the pale.

ArabellaSaurus · 27/10/2025 19:51

On the subject of the OP, its interesting how the badge echoes other discriminatory statements. 'No blacks, no Irish' is what it reminds me of.

The reason some characteristics are given protection in law is because discrimination against them is considered damaging to society.

The only thing needed for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.

Silverbirchleaf · 27/10/2025 19:54

In our local Tesco store, someone had a ‘Protect Trans Lives’ badge on. I did think this wasn’t probably official Tesco uniform either.

One day he'll say that to someone who actually wrote a biology text book
that would be funny
