Hobbycraft employee badge - no terfs, no Tories

ItsCoolForCats · 27/10/2025 18:36

Another example of why bringing your whole self to work is a terrible idea.

Hobbycraft seems to be busy trying to mitigate the fallout, presumably because they know which demographic spends the most money there.

EXCLUSIVE: Perthshire designer 'ordered to leave' Dundee Hobbycraft shop after transgender rights badge row

Crieff woman Rebekah Chapman claims she was subjected to "intolerance and nasty slogans" after complaining about a staff member's "no terfs, no Tories" badge.

I’d be very surprised if Hobbycraft tolerated an employee wearing a badger!

Haha. I once received a letter from a letting agent which made (repeated!) reference to my need for a ‘parking badger’ 😆

RapidOnsetGenderCritic · 27/10/2025 23:11

DoubleDuvet · 27/10/2025 22:07

I think you're missing the point of the reference a little.

Would anything like this make you speak up though?

Antisemitism? Racism? Homphobia? Lewd or explicit language or imagery?

Presumably everyone has a line?

I have become somewhat used to the cancelling, silencing etc of women's voices and am a coward, so probably wouldn't say anything. But I wonder when and where I would finally speak up. I have had to do a lot of self reflection lately as to how complicit I might have been in mainland Europe in the 30s, given my avoidance of confrontation and my willingness not to speak up.

I wanted to use the "agree" reaction, but I'm not prepared to agree that you are a coward. Definitely no more than I am anyway!

SidewaysOtter · 27/10/2025 22:09

Whether it's "evil" or not, it's potentially discriminatory - by excluding "TERFs and Tories", it could be construed as a refusal to serve someone whose views are protected under the Equality Act 2010, as clarified by Forstater v CGD Europe where GC views were confirmed to have met the five aspects of the Grainger test and qualified as a protected belief.

Discriminating on the basis of a protected belief is illegal.

In his latest video Edge Of The Matrix was refused entry to a cafe in York because of his GC beliefs. They admitted it on the video. I shall be interested to see if he decides to do anything about it.

Swiftasthewind · 27/10/2025 23:21

I think if the owner of the badge removes the TERF part and it strictly says No Tories or No Tories or Reform then I think it would be far less controversial. It would certainly get a thumbs up from me.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 27/10/2025 23:27

eatfigs · 27/10/2025 19:04

It's a daft badge, but not really worth causing a scene over. Whatever happened to internally rolling one's eyes and moving on. I'd have just paid for my shopping and left.

Would you expect someone to stay silent over a badge that said "no dogs, no Blacks, no Irish"? Or "No Catholics"?

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 27/10/2025 23:34

Silverbirchleaf · 27/10/2025 19:54

In our local Tesco store, someone had a ‘Protect Trans Lives’ badge on. I did think this wasn’t probably official Tesco uniform either.

  1. That's not quite the same as a badge excluding people.
  2. I think most FWR regulars want to protect trans people's lives too. We want to protect them from being shortened by cross-sex hormones and medically-unwarranted surgery.

No. Not at work in a customer facing role (or in any role actually)

We live in a democracy and money spent by tories or Reform voters is as good as anyone's money.

Someone needs to sit down with you and explain very slowly, in crayon if necessary, that denying services to anyone for the colour of their skin, ethnicity, religion or protected legal beliefs is discrimination and is illegal. It is EXACTLY the same as no irish, blacks, catholics or jews. This shouldn't be a difficult concept to grasp. And yet....

No.

Accepting and respecting plurality of views - the mark of civilised debate and a tolerant society - means accepting and respecting the views with which we disagree as well as the ones with which we agree.

The only thing needed for hatred to triumph is for good people to stay silent.

The only thing needed for nastiness to triumph is for good people to stay silent.

Once nastiness and hatred are normalised in society, evil soon follows.

The badge in question IS nasty and IS hateful.

that’s the point.

What if it said. No muslims? Or no disabled people? Would you still be ok with that? If not why not?

100%

"Protect lives' is fine. Its a bit unprofessional, perhaps, but not discriminatory.

Similar to wearing a badge supporting a political party to work. Unwise, possibly a little bit daft, but not discriminatory.

weegielass · 28/10/2025 08:33

I wouldn't have said anything or caused a scene. With the number of shops that have trans flags etc nowadays, where are we meant to shop now? Perhaps an email complaint to the HQ would have been enough to change this practice. (I don't agree with the badge at all, but I pick my battles).

MarieDeGournay · 28/10/2025 08:44

Apart from the actual text, it's inappropriate to wear any sort of politically-charged badges or slogans in the workplace.

That should have been made clear to the employee, whether the badge said No Terfs No Tories or Kemi for Prime Minister or If they can send one man to the Mars why can't they send them all there.
It's the principle of the thing - you're entitled to your views, but keep them out of the workplace.

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 28/10/2025 08:44

The 5 fundamental British values are "democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs."

They are taught in every state primary and secondary school, and are actively looked for in Ofsted inspections.

That badge is going against every single one of those values.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 28/10/2025 08:50

I think I would have gone in there, loaded up a trolley with the most expensive stuff, let that person ring it all through and then said "oh you don't want my custom then" and walked out

Floisme · 28/10/2025 08:52

I'm reminded of the 'Don't blame me I voted Labour' badge that I wore in 1979/80 because I needed everyone to know what a good person I was. In my defence, I was 22 and an idiot, but even then, I knew not to wear it to work or my mum and dad's silver wedding.

ArabellaSaurus · 28/10/2025 09:00

Rereading the articles; the issue isn't so much the badge using a slur about women, or the ensuing argument, but that the woman was ejected from the store because of her beliefs.

Don’t feel bad, when Reform get in at the next election you bet I will be wearing a Labour pin badge on every bit of clothing I own, so that in no uncertain terms will anyone ever be under the impression I voted for that shower to ruin the country.

The Tory party has enacted policies that actively harm significant numbers of people, their austerity policy alone caused deaths, their policy is elitist and discriminatory. Whilst they have been in power they have damaged the economy, increased national debt, removed us from the EU, and mishandled Covid so badly that thousands more died than needed to. All whilst giving their rich mates tax breaks and PPE contracts they never fulfilled.

So yes. They are vermin. Parasitic vermin. It’s not just a difference of beliefs, it’s a moral failing that has horrific and unacceptable consequences

Agree. The badge was inappropriate for a workplace, but the behaviour of the manager was appalling.

if you are okay with going round hating and considering vermin a huge percentage of the people you come across in daily life, you carry on @MarvellousMonsters, and others on the thread saying similar.

Personally I couldn’t live with myself feeling (and stoking) that level of hatred of my fellow humans.

If your political beliefs makes you hate so many people, there’s something wrong with your political beliefs.

Have her points hit a nerve with you, soulless Tory?

I think the interesting thing is the company say they are investigating. That would not happen at lush or M&S.
