Welcome one and all - as the nights draw in, pull up a chair to the fire, and the gerbils will be along soon with hot chocolate and Tunnock’s teacakes.

Just. Done a spot of gardening and decided i could not be arsed after 45 minutes. Saw an AIBU about a couple shagging in front of a window with. The light on.

Reminded me of a time we used to pass a row of terraces on the way home from the pub in the village.

there was a couple who used to sit in the lounge zonked out surrounded by eaten take away, with lights on and curtains open people used to peer in for the entertainment of it. Bets were placed on whether they would be hanging off their chair, left or right, who would be asleep on the sofa etc.

They must have found out eventually as curtains were firmly shut after a while.

This story is so funny, but I feel for those people being the unwitting stars of a village soap opera - and betting!

I tried putting the guys in normal clothes, but Gemini went a bit weird, so you're having your wicked way with leisure runners. Bit specific. Don't you like leisure runners?

They all appear to have beards, that's enough. 😂

MarieDeGournay · 31/08/2025 11:52

Morning [just about still...] all. Page 4 already! I missed the move - sorry/not sorry😏Thank you Woley for doing the necessary.

I see a very adventurous otter has joined us - welcome, BeGreatKhakiOtter.
I love that you have got the hang of Bluestockingness so quicklySmile

Wasn't there a whole thread elsewhere with images based on people's usernames? It so happened that many of us had animal usernames, hence the existence of a whole menagerie of Bluestockingers with beaks and hooves and fur and feathers... and a dissatisfied rump like me and Cher and Britinme* who didn't get the memo about being animals before we discovered the Bluestocking😐
You don't mind being called called a dissatisfied rump, do you Britinme? is it better or worse than being called a long-tailed tit?😁

'Chickadee' will always call up images of Mae West in My Little Chickadee delivering lines like:
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court?
Flower Belle: No, your honor, I'm doin' my best to hide it!

Britinme · 31/08/2025 11:58

I also like the Mae West connection :-). But we chickadees do have our own Wikipedia page you know: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chickadee. And we are a state bird so, you know, classy.

Well Co-pilot has had several goes at being less cute and discouraging the gerbils. Not sure this is going to be a success

I hate cutesy stuff as well, so I went for a wander on the nearby fells where I saw this quadruped heading for the Bluestocking and wondered ... is that you @FarriersGirl?

Caught up at last...<puffing> Thought it was about time I had a spirit animal so this is what co-pilot came up with.

Someone on Pedants’ Corner objected to the interjection ‘Aww’ as not being a real word. Clearly they’re wrong.

Aww

Blimey, you lot! Over 215 posts and a new thread.

This poor old lion can’t walk very fast, so it’s taken a while to arrive.

And I seem to be missing a leg. Did that very shiny boot destroy it?

Lovely to meet the intrepid exploring Otter!

And @FarriersGirl , maybe you’re a shire horse, far too big (but not scary) for the little gerbils to ride on?

I can't decide on a spirit animal. I rather think it would have to be a shape-changing thing that would match my mood at any given time.

Today I may be a... What's kind of slow but inclined to turn a bit snarly when provoked?

Swan?
Panda?
Elephant?
or maybe a lovely wildcat ... not slow, I'll grant you

Having seen how many locations where @Boiledbeetle has stored so many Tunnocks teacakes, I am beginning to suspect she doesn’t actually eat any of them. She just likes to have her cake, and look at it fondly.

Because it couldn’t possibly be to stop other Bluestockingers from eating them, could it? 🤔

What an idea! Can you imagine Boily doing that?

And the flashing adverts.

I move slowly (penguins have short legs) so just arrived on the new thread. Thanks to @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius for finding the location and hello to all.

I have a large magazine which I drape over the right hand side of my computer screen for MN to hide the adverts. Doesn't MN know about flashing adverts triggering migraine, epileptic episodes and so on in certain people? They really are not disability-aware for some conditions, and this is not an obscure one. See this old article from the ASA, which is for TV but is generally true imho.

Following advice on this thread and earlier ones I have installed an ad blocker on my phone and I don't use MN on my iPad at all. If I did it made the iPad get very hot and all sites run slowly. This is why I've become a less frequent poster, as I can often only use the computer for more than a few minutes when the rest of the household has gone out or to bed.

Which painted Jezebel was hankering after older gentlemen from The Staunch Ally, on the last thread? You should be ashamed of yourself!

Here they are.

Oooh - I do rather like the chap in the middle, in the tween waistcoat - very dapper.

Otters are some of my favourite animals, so it is lovely to see @BeGreatKhakiOtter here. I bought my mum a Raku glazed otter ornament for Christmas one year, and when she died, I brought it back here, and it’s on my window ledge, along with a Raku glazed moon-gazing hare. We don’t have a hare yet, do we?

Lovely black and white formal wear, @Bannedontherun! Even though I am a Wolef, I do sometimes feel my spirit animal is a sloth - I can do all the sleeping and slow moving, but not the hanging upside down - difficult to knit that way up.

I hope all that chocolate hasn’t melted and gummed up all your prickles, @BeLemonNow - that could be a bit of a bugger to clean off!

That reminds me of those photos you sometimes see of a massive dog looking sad and confused because a tiny kitten has stolen his bed.

Boiledbeetle · 31/08/2025 13:03

I honestly thought they were just for hoarding and looking at purposes. With the occasional strange occurrence thrown in.

I think you can look at them, but it’s not really fair if you take them all and stop others from eating them. Or looking at them.

Maybe we could build you a Tunnocks Teacakes Museum in the Bluestocking.

@BeLemonNow

That'll be the predecessor of the electric sheep, the steam-powered sheep.

First demonstrated in the early 19th century above Merthyr Tudful.
