Welcome one and all - as the nights draw in, pull up a chair to the fire, and the gerbils will be along soon with hot chocolate and Tunnock’s teacakes.

Am off on a four day holiday with hoglettes and grand hoglettes so preparing for sleep deprivation and chasing small people around, dealing with tantrums etc

after that we are on our boat for a week but cannot really go anywhere as all the lock are shut.

You can put all sorts of things in a soup or stir fry but whether they all improve the dish is sometimes debatable.

I stand by the authenticity of radishes in a stir fry - they are just small red round versions of daikons.😄

Fair point. Maybe I’ll try that if DH buys any … he thinks he likes the, in salad sometimes but doesn’t really.

I never thought of microwaving bananas - coming to think of it, I only got a microwave fairly recently, so microwaving anything wouldn't have popped into my mind!
But now I have a microwave [-oven, inserted to placate Pedantry Corner] - how long do you leave the bananas in? in their skin?
or 'shkin an' all' as we say hereSmile

It's a thing with too many variables to give an accurate time. Definitely Out of skin though! Softness of banana, cut, not cut, normal sugar Brown sugar, icing sugar, butter sat on the side all day or straight out the fridge, amount of sugar, amount of butter, wattage of microwave, how sloppy and lava like you wish the end result to be, how much you like burning your mouth whilst eating, making it during an advert break...

Basically shove it in for 30 seconds. Give it a stir. See how it's going, repeat whilst watching intently through the window!

Stop when it reaches "yeah that will do" stage!

DeanElderberry · 13/09/2025 19:36

mouth-burning banana lava with ice cream is very good

Most definitely!

And with whiskey/rum you're basically having a deconstructed bananas flambé without the attendant danger of burning the kitchen down.

Though that can be fun too, with an audience.

I have just put a banana in my next shop just so I can try it with whiskey. Although I'm torn between the Bells or the Fireball.

genandtonic · 13/09/2025 19:42

Have many bananas but they are in the kitchen whereas the whiskey is here.
just saying!

Isn't it nice that despite my differing from Boily on the desirability of chickpeas and lemon drizzle cake, we are One Woman on the subject of bananas.

How do you feel about Marmite?

DeanElderberry · 13/09/2025 19:50

enthusiastic but wary because it contains wheat

So you would if you could but you can't so you won't.

That is acceptable.

DeanElderberry · 13/09/2025 19:52

I still might spread it thinly on a slice of spelt bread but fear my days of eating it with a spoon, or filling hollowed half-cucumber 'dug-out-canoes' with it are over.

SAD TIMES

Bannedontherun · 13/09/2025 19:52

I think boiled ought write a cook book, would make a great read. Regarding measurements and timings.

remember come dine with me early doors, i recall a dinner lady who basically served up a school dinner.

And then there was the one who did Mexican night, her re fried beans were a can of Heinz fried up.

and then there was guy who strained something in a Muslim

was so funny,

I loved the episode where the host got a takeaway delivered. My memory thinks through the window in the kitchen but that may just be me adding details in my head. Then passed it off as her own.

A cookbook would be interesting! Add what looks about right, cook at whatever temp is just below the temp your oven doesn't incinerate the food. Remove when it's reached a state in which you deem it edible. (How I didn't kill anyone when I worked in a pub kitchen is beyond me).

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2025 20:00

I like marmite but not enough to always have any in the cupboard. I’ve discovered that if I need a salt savoury hit on buttered toast, miso works pretty well instead. (Yes, I know…wtf would I have miso available but not marmite.)

Laugh again, yes it was through the window.

i make up my own recipes to be honest,

It's alright, when the apocalypse comes I've got enough Marmite to keep the Bluestocking stocked for a good while!

Nice to see everyone again.

I like chickpeas very much although rarely think to use them. Also love raw garlic and marmite and have plenty daily.
