Welcome to the Bluestocking Arms, the home of good company, excellent drinks and delicious cakes which magically have no irksome contents like gluten or sugar or calories or the kind of alcohol that causes problems - but you wouldn't knowSmile

Food and drink are served by a keen staff of gerbils, and other animals such as capybaras, quokkas, etc., also fulfil vital roles, while looking cute AF.

New Bluestockingers always welcome.

I turned out to be OK at woodwork, probably why I ended up training as a joiner. I still have the little shelf unit they had us make at college. God it's nearly 40 years old!

Hey, is that Spare Head 2 on top of that unit? I was wondering where it went after the divorce (about 23 hours after the wedding). Give it back, you blighter!

EdithStourton · 08/06/2025 23:34

I can knit some extras too. I have a few ideas washing around...

ErrolTheDragon · 08/06/2025 23:34

No prizes for guessing where I went today.
back home now after a long weekend in London.

Well, that was easier once the photo came up. 😂 I was wondering what was so damned obvious yet I couldn't guess it (but that's a constant feeling, so WHERE IS THE SHRUG EMOJI?).

CautiousLurker01 · 08/06/2025 23:41

Will do some extra squares for non knitters once I’ve worked out how to get one in the right size/tension.

And yeah… my mum got around in the 70’s, even with a child (me) in tow.

It’d be helpful if everyone got the ‘image under review’ message, I think only the person posting a picture sees that?
ah well. Have a 🤷‍♀️

Thank you! Hey, now I have a 🤷‍♀️!!!

Are PMs back now, after The Great Unpleasantness led to their removal?

Boiledbeetle · 08/06/2025 23:52

Yes

Can we sack gerbils?

I don't think Gaynor, Gigi and Georgie are taking my predicament seriously enough.

I’m sorry ElizaBlack’s kindly meant instructions made you a source of gerbil amusement, Boily.

Would trying the last set instead have been better? Do you need me to visit the secret Tunnocks room in The Bluestocking to cut you out?

Plain square
Cast on 31 stitches
Stocking stitch for 50 rows
Cast off

Edited

Thank you for this - was about to ask ChatGTP for guidance on how many stitches to cast on and how many rows approx!!

Igneococcus · 09/06/2025 08:30

Oooh, I haven't knitted in years but I'll dig out the needles for Swashy. I might have to do some plain squares though.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/06/2025 09:26

Plain squares are just as important as the patterned ones, @Igneococcus - without them there, the patterned ones would get lost - they make them stand out.

@CautiousLurker01 - the number of stitches and rows does depend on your tension - I usually cast on 36 stitches, but I don't know how many rows I do - it's around 40, I think. But my tension is quite tight, hence needing more stitches.

Good tip - my tension is rather tight too. Sometimes I have to go up a needle size to compensate!

Tension? Needle size? Aghhhhhhhhh

dp was taught knitting at school and never managed to get the tension right. He accidentally invented the self-furling scarf.

Boiledbeetle · 09/06/2025 11:10

OK can someone explain to me how I, a beetle of distinction, end up with knitting needles stuck in my ears, but the gerbils, THE GERBILS , can look at a ball of wool and some knitting needles and suddenly they are all top level knitters, wandering around in knitted jumpers.

It's just not on.

Boiledbeetle · 09/06/2025 11:14

Can't knock them though, their jumpers are top notch!

Gerbils do have fewer limbs to coordinate, maybe?

Crocheted squares are allowed, too.

MarieDeGournay · 09/06/2025 11:35

It's lovely to see the gerbils are happy to spend their tea break knitting a hug for dear Swash.💙
