Welcome to the Bluestocking Arms, the home of good company, excellent drinks and delicious cakes which magically have no irksome contents like gluten or sugar or calories or the kind of alcohol that causes problems - but you wouldn't knowSmile

Food and drink are served by a keen staff of gerbils, and other animals such as capybaras, quokkas, etc., also fulfil vital roles, while looking cute AF.

New Bluestockingers always welcome.

I found a poor little waif and stray hanging about by the bins when I went out to take delivery of the pubs Tunnock's order.

I've fed it and watered it and it seems much happier now, but I think it's scared of being kicked out and won't come out from under the table.

Poor little thing!

I know, apparently it had been residing quite happily on all the boards then MNHQ, totally illegally, evicted it with no notice.

Cruel MNHQ!

Ah, but was it doing its share of the housework, half the night feeds and paying the bills?

Probably not! Every time 🤰 asked for help with 🚼 💰 or 🍼 a 😂 was the only response.

Very cruel! It was a very useful little critter and I am missing it muchly on this thread.

Dentist pixel, comments about trumpet involuntary etc. All v funny and no little laughing chappies express my feelings.

Interview went okay aside from tech issues. Would score myself a 7/10. Interviews have changed since my young day. How does one demonstrate resilience in a constantly shifting situation other than getting on with it and being okay afterwards? And of course when faced with the question I struggled to think of an example.

And I have plenty. The day at work when we found that the junior, off on block release in the days before mobile phones, had left what was, in work terms, an unexploded bomb on the file which was due to be submitted that afternoon. Dealing with a medical emergency (I've had a few of those to handle). Coping with constant changes of plan towards the end of term at school, with small children bouncing off the walls (and off each other).

So tomorrow, provided it's not pissing down, I'll be gardening to recuperate. I'll be with Deano in spirit if not in person, trying to get at the nettles behind a shrub rose.

Right my fellow Pub dwellers, I could do a general post on Mumsnet, but would rather not. So, where will I find on the internet the rules a dentist is supposed to follow/how to treat patients etc etc especially when your own dentist doesn't even have a website!

All I'm finding is lots of stuff on people being entitled to a nhs dentist, but how the dentist is supposed to behave is proving rather elusive.

Turbochook · 05/06/2025 20:01

Try the CQC. Latest guidance on what you should be able to expect here, but I think the wording in this older, but essentially very similar version is clearer.
https://www.peoplefirstinfo.org.uk/media/yqegmovi/cqc-standards_to_expect_dentist.pdf

Why does MN spit the dummy every time I add more than one hyperlink? It's tedious.

Sorry about your tooth issues boiled.

I have popped in and out today and was fully amused but couldnt think of anything to add that was funny <opens bottle of wine>

See if that will help.

Had some advice on bigly

bigly

Ooooo it works

Boiledbeetle · 05/06/2025 20:08

Thank you Dean and Turbo, that should help send me down the right path rather than going in circles.

Boiledbeetle · 05/06/2025 20:15

I have now discovered that my dentist has changed hands since I first joined it and the person I was arguing with is the new owner. Might explain the response of whataboutery I got when I pointed out their multiple wrong doings today.

I think I'll ring the General Dental Council tomorrow and see if they can answer my very specific, (I'm not sure if the dentist was making stuff up on the spot) questions.

I'm just glad I don't currently have tooth ache, I was only going for a sodding check up.

I want my old old dentist back he was ace, the ones since him have been distinctly lacking!

Warning: rant follows… I'm feeling grumpy.

It's rained most of the day.

The bike shop has charged me a small fortune in parts without confirming with me in advance and I'm wishing that when this place suggested sawing bits off I'd simply retrieved my bike and resigned myself to more waiting and a long trip to an only semi-reliable workshop instead of telling them to leave the frame well alone but sort the drivetrain as per original request. Trouble is that I really need my bike. The mechanic I used to use went out of business during the pandemic and finding a trustworthy replacement seems to be impossible.

Could cope better without bike if my knee weren't swollen and stiff over a week after I ran too much, because I was stressed and very upset. Seems to have undone many, many months of painstakingly slow and careful rehab of a longstanding injury. My knee ought to be robust enough to rebound quickly. I didn't think I'd overdone the running by much. It's depressing as I was starting to think I might be able to run more or less normally by the end of the summer.

Plus the possibly mad work project I started turns out to be definitely mad. I’d back out now if I didn't need the money. I think I'll last 10 weeks, but it isn't going to be comfortable.

And MN doesn't seem to recognise html tags and I can't find a Help section that covers this stuff.

Last grouch, why has my supermarket of choice festooned its website with some sort of alphabet salad flag this month? Do they realise it puts up the hackles of every feminist in the land?

Gerbils, a large mug of peppermint tea, please. I'm not sure it's good for me to have a virtual pub where I can give free rein to my nascent curmudgeonliness!

Boiledbeetle · 05/06/2025 20:33

@Turbochook whilst you wait for a gerbil to bring you tea to borrow the words of your bike shop...

@Boiledbeetle Aarggghh You or your sex-stereotyping AI has given me a pink helmet! Grrr

Bannedontherun · 05/06/2025 20:49

Speaking of deafness i once had a phone call on my landline back in the day when they were a common appliance.

Anyway it was a caller selling hearing aids.

I just could not resist saying “you what”

”sorry cant hear you”, “can you speak up please” etc, until they hung up

this is true.

Edited

I know it's terrible! I didn't state a colour, or even a helmet, it just decided you must want a pink one! (Although it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be when asked to depict a woman)

I'm sorry, Chook.
I share your pain re bike medics. Our excellent one had the bloody nerve to retire a few years ago, so now it's a long drive to a much pricier place (an actual bike shop).
DH has various injuries which flare up when he starts running again. This time he's had the common sense to wean himself in much more gently than normal, but has still had to have breaks. Apparently nettle tea is super good for one's joints (not DH, FB).

MyrtleLion · 05/06/2025 21:00

I am drinking mint juleps, aperol spritzes and margaritas 🍹

Went to a wine tasting.

The Walrus is watching football - Spain vs France where the Spanish commentators literally yell GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL! in Spanish.

The amount I care diminishes with every cocktail. I'm also on my second paperback (Butter by Asako Yuzuki, feminism, food and murder, Japanese-style - it's fucking brilliant).

I'm having a fabulous holiday 😎

I seem to have deleted all the booby women images it kept throwing at us back in the beginning! But I did find some previous WTF? images

I'll agree the mountain lion with cleavage was slightly worrying, but as the first time I asked it to generate the image I missed the Lion off then when I added in the Lion it ignored it so by the time I got a Lion picture the cleavage was a small price to pay.

Images without the Lion in the prompt, just the mountain 👇

If you want icky, @Turbochook, I give you my first Bluestocking post, back in the mists of time: the Spam cocktail.
