Have I completely misunderstood GCSE biology...

...or is the purpose of spotting an anomaly not specifically to disregard it in order that it doesn't lead to an inaccurate conclusion?

If so, why is everyone fixating on DSDs as "proof" that sex is a spectrum, when the anomalous 1.7% (if indeed it is as high as that - from what I've read that figure is only achieved if you include conditions such as PCOS which have a tenuous claim at best to be one of the "intersex" variations) is clearly a set of results that don't fit. Because something has deviated from the norm. It's not like calculating the mean of a range of heights, FFS.

Please can someone more scientific than me explain what is going on here? Or is it simply that certain factions are so hell-bent on arguing that anyone with ladyfeels can be a woman they're happy to completely disregard any sort of science or logic in order to do so?

People are stupid
people make things up
people just like shit stirring

TheOtherRaven · 23/05/2025 18:17

Look at the purpose.

It's all and only about silencing non consenting women and forcing submission to men (who are totally unambiguously male) by being undressed or in a state of vulnerability in front of them.

The science is more or less irrelevant, hence the incoherence.

Circumferences · 23/05/2025 18:28

It's gender ideology myth number five.

Because some people with a DSD exist, that means men can be women.

Just ignore them.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 23/05/2025 18:30

It's amazing how these anti fact /anti science beliefs have taken hold - even amidst the "highest" in the land judging by the inane witterings of politicians, ex judges, lawyers, some doctors etc.

Still - only women gestate and give birth. Biology being such a bigot 😂

You got it.

It comes from the same school of thought that sex doesn't exist, but nonetheless, being trans means your gender doesn't align with it.

Or that men everywhere have been using women's spaces without women even noticing, but short haired women with a flat chest are constantly challenged by women for being men.

And that transwomen only want to pee, but not in that toilet, or that one, or this one specifically for us, only in yours.

Circumferences · 23/05/2025 18:33

All types of DSD ever recorded are either a male DSD type, or a female DSD type.

Your sex refers directly to your sexual function, whether you produce sperm or egg.
No human on the planet has produced something other than sperm or egg, and no recorded human has ever produced both.

Plenty have produced neither, but this makes them an infertile male or an infertile female. Not some "other" sex of human.

Sex is binary, humans can't change sex.

Gender is a load of sexist codswallop, and there are as many different "genders" as there are personalities.

Mumofteenandtween · 23/05/2025 18:40

Do you know what I find disappointing? It is the fact that Tom Daly - who always claims that he is a big supporter of trans rights - did not use a transwomam for his surrogate.

It would have been such an excellent way for him to show that transwomen are indeed women just like he says. I just can’t think why he didn’t. 😉

proximalhumerous · 23/05/2025 18:41

Can anyone point me to a source which classifies which DSDs are male and which female?

I am astonished how many people with DSDs themselves subscribe to this utter twaddle.

No, me neither. How very bigoted of him.

certain factions are so hell-bent on arguing that anyone with ladyfeels can be a woman they're happy to completely disregard any sort of science or logic in order to do so?

That's the one. Every other aspect is so ill-defined, this is the closest thing they've got to a solid argument with definitions and data.

Which is .... not very close at all. For a start the 1.7% figure is out by about 2 orders of magnitude. And there's absolutely no evidence of higher rates of DSDs among people with a trans identity. Plus all the rest is also bollocks.

Would they be male bollocks or female bollocks? Or perhaps non-binary bollocks?

Not you OP but I'm going to go all 'Elmo burning the world down' at the next TRA claiming that PCOS is both (incorrectly) a DSD and that the symptoms of my female endocrine disorder make me a man.

mrshoho · 23/05/2025 19:02

They clutch tightly at straws

No, you're so right, GCSE Biology is where all scientific knowledge and thinking stops. It's all you need to understand "any sort of science or logic".

eatfigs · 23/05/2025 19:06

The end goal is for men to be granted access to women's spaces. This is one of the arguments used in an attempt to reach that goal.

No, that's not what I said.

My point was I learnt in (mere) GCSE biology to identify and disregard anomalies; i.e. it's not a difficult or advanced concept, but nevertheless it seems too complex for TRAs to grasp in their fervid determination to proof that sex is a spectrum.

The thing is, if you're going to come up with some sort of new model it has to actually be more accurate and have better predictive value than GCSE biology.

Being different/weird/heterodox isn't sufficient - you have to actually have something that lets people understand reality better, not something that deliberately obscures reality.

The GCSE biology reference was meant to be a bit facetious, but I did ask in the first paragraph of my OP whether broadly I am correct in my assertion.

If not, I'm happy to be disabused.

Some people are easy to confuse. My own dear mother (who is 82, bless her) was telling me that a distant cousin has realised in mid-life that she's a man, and she's had a double mastectomy to prove it. When I expressed horror, my mother said "But she's so much happier as a man. And when they tested her, it turned out she had really high testosterone. They're discovering new things all the time, you know." It's amazing my cousin managed to give birth to three children before she realised she was a man.

MagpiePi · 23/05/2025 19:20

I thought clownfish and avocados proved sex could be changed.

(And I got 8 out of 8 in the BBC bitsize test despite not reading the text and not doing O level biology since 1984, but what do I know?! )

BigfootSmallButtons · 23/05/2025 19:20

It's because you haven't researched the super-advanced biology stuff that every troon activist is balls-deep in. The serious big-ball stuff that explains why someone with a DSD provides the perfect genetic cover for fifty-year-old frock-wearing Dave.
