not heard of "watchful waiting"
bloody hell

This from someone who teaches courses in gender studies and feminism. Here.

That page says she works as a Teaching Fellow, and has taught in Uk universities for 15 years. I know little about university academic careers, but isn’t that a long time still to be a Teaching Fellow? The family member I know who works in academia had a Teaching Fellow post (at an RG university), initially while finishing a PhD, for under two years before moving on and up.

Yes, the same. He’s one of the most aggressive and misogynistic bullies in UCU. And also not an academic. I’m uncomfortable about UCU representing Professional Services staff because some of them do seem to demonstrate outright hostility towards the principle of academic freedom.

I can absolutely promise you that that isn't the case for all. Let's not forget that the current witness is an academic who is accused of curtailing academic freedom!

I know it's a wider issue and I'm not aiming this at you specifically, but there's such a gulf between academics/PS staff on occasions when we all need to work together - some us work really hard to bridge that but I feel like I'm banging my head on a wall at times...

Appalonia · 03/04/2025 11:43

Oh she hasn't watched it. But has read the transcript.

nauticant · 03/04/2025 11:43

And no, she's not watched the film. Any increase in views harms the LGBTQ+ community. But she has read the transcript.

thenoisiesttermagant · 03/04/2025 11:43

I'd like NC to ask is there any combination of words to describe the type of human whose body is organised around the production of large gametes / has XX sex chromosomes which is a) possible for a normal person to understand and b) isn't transphobic?

Because the answer is clearly no, they are taking our language - the language of ordinary people - away, deliberately.

nauticant · 03/04/2025 11:45

She's an authoritarian academic. Of course she'll support the imposition of Newspeak.

That’s the heart of the matter isn’t it, they are imposing their incoherent, elitist luxury belief on people who don’t believe in it.

(this in response to AsWithGlad on being a TF for a long time) She's both a research fellow (in geosciences! the human geography side) and a teaching fellow at the Centre for Open Learning - that's not teaching degree level stuff, likely, it's the public education organisation. Presumably she works part-time as a RF.

I wonder about this too. At my place it seems to be the professional services staff who have most bought into this stuff, in the greatest numbers. Any idea why that should be?

thenoisiesttermagant · 03/04/2025 11:52

Why should we, whose rights to single sex spaces are being removed for ourselves and our vulnerable daughters, care if LW feels a bit upset about Aja using the word 'bruv'? Seriously - people with this lack of resilience shouldn't be employed in any job that requires contact with other people.

I am definitely not saying all! I know several who are openly GC. Just wondered why GI should be so big among PS staff, comparatively.

I also thought - perhaps mistakenly - that most PS staff were in Unison not UCU?

thenoisiesttermagant · 03/04/2025 11:55

So on the one hand she's confident dismissing normal language as 'hate speech' and verboten but on the other doesn't have the most basic knowledge of extremely prominent transwomen who are not backward in writing whole books and confidently discussing how they like being degraded 'as women'? Chinny reckon.

Either she's lying or she's too dim to hold her job.

Edited

She’s also a tutor in the School of English Literature, which I assume is supporting degree level stuff.

So she’s a lower-level academic than I first thought. In her favour, though, I imagine there’s a lot of competition for jobs in English Literature.

one rule for them, one for everyone else

Yes, agreed. I did say “some” - not all!

UCU represents PS staff above a certain grade, I think. Other administrative staff at a lower grade are in different unions.

im amazed that she hasn’t read Julia Serano who espouses this perspective

MarieDeGournay · 03/04/2025 11:57

LW's areas of research look interesting. If I could respect her base line, I'd be interested in reading what she writes, but since I know that she's working from a position of denying biological reality... I don't think so.
It's such a shame - lots of interesting topics, but holed below the waterline..

I see she has done work in the area of disability inclusion. I wonder what she brought to/brings from that?

Pot and kettle.

Appalonia · 03/04/2025 11:59

The money comes from ordinary women donating money!

nauticant · 03/04/2025 11:59

LW: So who funded this employment tribunal? There must be someone [behind it] with money.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/04/2025 11:59

Jo Phoenix is an academic and uses verified stats in the film, just off the top of my head.

thenoisiesttermagant · 03/04/2025 12:00

She thinks there's 'money coming from somewhere' so it must be some right wing lobby group. Maybe thousands of ordinary people each donate a fiver? Because they're so appalled by this shit? It doesn't have to be a well funded lobby group. Please note this NC!

nauticant · 03/04/2025 12:00

She's now denying that women choose, out of their own desires, to meet up and discuss gender issues. She's implying they must be manipulated to do so.

So incredibly sexist.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/04/2025 12:01

Why does she think famously liberal JKR is so invested? Does she think she’s been got to?
