She's just got the Equality Act wrong. She's unaware of the exceptions.

Yes, some of us stopped paying £40 a month to be in UCU and diverted those funds into holding UCU to account.

Although she said she didn't understand the question about bad ideas, she's making clear that there shouldn't be any debate.

Right, so there's no debate, there shouldn't be a debate, but there's a debate happening all the time.

What she means is that the only permitted debate is among right-thinking people who all share the acceptable set of views.

I think this is highly unlikely.

She seems to live in a very rarefied little world.

It's a very small debate amongst a small committee where the GI people repeatedly overrule the GC people and then decide it's a closed matter.

I'm not sure on the union front, I've certainly known several who are UCU members. I'm not aware of any who are Unison members but it's not widely discussed. I only knew of the UCU ones when they went on strike! My understanding is that UCU are supposed to represent all staff above a certain grade whether academic or PS, member or not (but in reality they aren't interested in anyone who isn't paying subs, IME).

I think there seems to be a significant number in either group who are GI but then we probably notice them because they're the ones with the pronouns in signatures, proclamations that they're an "Ally" etc but I suspect there's a lot more who either don't really care or who are quietly GC but don't want to put their head above the parapet. I'm definitely the latter group, I don't want people turning on me!

UCU is the union staff above a certain grade are encouraged to join but in reality they openly state their priority is academic members. Unison is no better really so PS staff are a bit stuck really
