Here for your delight and delectation is the hostelry by, for, and about wise, intelligent, creative and kind women, their assorted avatars including (but not limited to) a remarkable beetle, an astute android, a wise cake, and an assembly of companion creatures and animal assistants.

Food and drink available in abundance, all with remarkable non-damaging qualities.

Males may congregate in the nearby Staunch Ally and sometimes visit the stableyard to view outdoor performances by the gerbil waitstaff (who need to be distracted after the moment after that terrible 'misunderstanding' about the meaning of safe sex).

last thread here if you need to know why the Quokkas need some extra cuddles, and why the Cabybaras are being particularly efficient just now

That's a gorgeous ship!

You can dock it round the back of the pub when you get back. That might be why we relocated, so you could have your ship alongside.

Yes yes, AI, of course we need Swash's ship to be able to dock, but a suitably scaled navigable waterway accessing the back of the stable block will be quite adequate - plenty of space to store casks, kegs, and treasure chests and Swash and our international guests will enjoy the stroll across the yard.

In these time of increasingly frequent and severe weather events the Bluestocking is better a few miles from the open sea, with some coppiced woodland and wind-proof sycamores between us and the ocean gales. And a few well-placed hills, they're very useful, as demonstrated by Storm Éowyn.

A reduced risk of stepping out of the front door into deep water is good too.

I also want to know who those mutant squirrels are and what they've done with the gerbils.

And hoping they didn't do it with the gerbils on top of the safe.

Fear not Deano, obviously we're tucked into a nice sheltered bay. The main door is on the landward side, the staff firmly direct anyone there if they are three sheets to the wind and liable to fall off the dock.
I'm sure there must be a few nice little dinghies somewhere for those of us who like to mess about in boats on a smaller scale.

Chersfrozenface · 24/02/2025 09:20

What the topography around the Bluestocking needs is a 'pill'.

A 'pill' is a smallish tidal inlet, large enough to dock many medieval and early modern ships for loading, unloading, maintenance and refitting. Look up the Newport Medieval Ship.

The word is used mainly along the coasts of the Severn Sea AKA the Bristol Channel and in Cornwall.

Boiledbeetle · 24/02/2025 09:44

Turns out boats are harder to nick than Tunnocks! Can someone help me catch a drifting ship?

Male pirates, 18th century ship, chinook helicopter ( ish) and a huge beetle.

Mind blown.

Boiledbeetle · 24/02/2025 10:24

It was that or this👇

Fair enough! 🤣🤣

Murfmeister · 24/02/2025 11:14

Morning all!!

Going to be a bit late - car in for MOT then have to pick the cat en route otherwise he would never forgive me for missing out.

Would love a lemon and ginger tea when I get there please.

Swashbuckled · 24/02/2025 11:34

Morning all.

The picture was of the Pirate Tavern I was visiting last night. My ship is much less grand (sadly) and can easily navigate the smaller strips of water to pull up alongside The Blue Stocking. (So maybe not “sadly” after all 😊.)

Swashbuckled · 24/02/2025 11:42

And I also have my MOT today @Murfmeister

Cats....hurrah! 🐈

Magpiecomplex · 24/02/2025 12:12

Here you are! I thought I'd lost you!
Sympathy for those of you with MOTs, mine was last week...

116 posts already!! I guess that's what happens when I slob around in bed half the morning.

Thank you for the shiny new thread, @DeanElderberry.

I am still limping round - but I have ordered a walking stick for myself, which may help.

And we have ds3's girlfriend staying for a few days - she is on a course in Glasgow, and it's easier to commute from here, plus we can dog sit her dog, who is very cute indeed.

DeanElderberry · 24/02/2025 13:50

There's a village a few miles from here where in times past people could (and did) get on a barge, travel down the lake and through the canal system to either Limerick or Dublin, transfer (by rowing boat) on to a ship, and travel on to North America, Australia, GB or wherever, without ever setting foot on dry land again.

Safer than walking through a port carrying all your worldly possessions.

40 miles from the open sea.

Anyhow, since we do have visiting ships, and you never know what might be brought ashore, or by whom, should we designate on of the snugs especially for smugglers the gentlemen traders? When they aren't around, the quokkas, or the dogs, or Rosy, or anyone in need of a small cosy space to get together could use it. That should make them feel validated and comfortable and rather pleased with life.

Wood panelled, direct access to the bar, cosy little wood stove, well scrubbed table and comfortably upholstered seating: the Smug Snugglers' Smugglers' Snug.

That, Deano, is the best name for a room, ever! Well done.

I might try in a minute (fresh coffee & a pain au chocolat await my presence) but it puts me in mind of Murph & the Magictones, having seen the Blues Brothers the other night for the eleventy thousandth time. Not sure the AI is up to that.

Welcome, anyway, @Murfmeister!

I'm assuming you'll be here soon, so just brewed the tea for you.

The capybara have pulled the dugout from the water and filled it with dirt and flowers. I was going to offer it for use as a tender for the pirate ship I suppose...well, I suppose that ship has sailed.

I over did the rum last night and I vaguely remember hiding something. I can't remember what or why though. Hope it wasn't important.

How are Rosy and the quokkas getting on? That would be a great band name.

I thought I'd join you in the snug, Android, thoughi seem to have my legs stuck down the back of the sofa.

I grew a mane again.

Can lionesses suffer from PCOS?

FuzzyPuffling · 24/02/2025 16:17

Rosy is chilling on a handy tree. The quokkas think it is too cold for outdoor activities.
