The Blue Stockings Society was founded by women emphasising education and mutual cooperation. Men could attend as invited guests, but in this Women's Pub, they are only welcome to peer enviously through the windows.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Stockings_Society

All women welcome!

All tastes catered for.

All food containing calories will not increase waistlines.

All drink containing alcohol will not intoxicate beyond the mildy merry and slightly inhibited stage. Guaranteed no hangovers.

Don't mind the gerbils, hamster, capybaras, quokkas and other assorted rodents. They're all female, all staff and very accommodating...

oh the suspense! they are 'reviewing' my image, which is so not anything reviewable. AND they've ruined my joke... though maybe not, maybe they've set up a suspenseful wait for the punchline...
Oh good, it's passed! what was wrong with it??

I think this is the new image posting filter to make sure everything is above board before anyone can see it. My fingernails also got reviewed.

I am in awe of anybody with fingernails nice enough to decorate and the small motor skills to do it neatly.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/02/2025 23:46

Does nail varnish nowadays last better than it used to? It always chipped too soon on fingernails to seem worth bothering. Used to like blue or turquoise toenails, but they're stronger since I stopped.

AsWithGlad · 07/02/2025 23:51

Gel nail varnish does, Errol, but it wrecks your fingernails if you use it all the time, or so I am told.

I've never worn nail polish, but I can imagine that applying it with your non-dominant hand must involve great skill.
Ditto high heels, which I've never worn - I can't imagine being able to walk like that; and yet millions doSmile

That's beautiful!
The green is very nice indeed, but a bit thin, so it needed three coats. Forgive the slightly messy job, that's Magic Tooth Fairy with Believe In Dreams on my ring finger.

Ooh, very beetle wing-y. I don't know why Boily isn't interested in that one.

I've put a teeny tiny holographic dot top coat over my pink/lilac/taupe/grey blue colour shift. Because I can, & it makes me happy to look at it.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/02/2025 01:04

Gosh, that sounds fancy, android.

My technique to do my right hand was to hold the brush still with the left and move each fingernail along it - is that what others do?

High heel wearing though... never could do properly high ones (not counting the platform wedges of my youth!) and now my big toes don't bend enough to allow more than about an inch anyway.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/02/2025 01:05

I suppose she doesn't need it!

Britinme · 08/02/2025 03:13

I used to wear high heels in my teens but anything more than about an inch doesn't work for me nowadays, and anyway I wear jeans or trousers 95% of the time.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/02/2025 09:03

I pretty never wear skirts or dresses except in summer, that mainly because I can't find winter shoes or boots which go with them that fit my feet. Sandals are much more accommodating.

I just wear dresses and skirts with thick tights and stompy boots in winter. And a petticoat for warmth, as often as not.

Occasionally I might bear a passing resemblance to Holly Hobby but I don't care.

Magpiecomplex · 08/02/2025 09:54

I'm a big fan of stompy boots! I don't often paint my fingernails but my toenails are always painted during sandals season.

One big advantage of stompy boots is the support they give my ankles, especially the one that's pretty much buggered.

And the highly textured grippy soles that help me not fall over.

Two. The two big advantages.

I don't use gel polish, @ErrolTheDragon, and it always chips really quickly. Plus it seems to take ages to dry hard, and I can't knit or crochet until it is hard, and I prefer crafting to pretty nails.

I do still get tempted to buy nail polish, when I see a particularly pretty colour, but I am reasonably good at talking myself out of it.

And I wear skirts or dresses all year round, and don't bother with tights - I can't bend well enough to put them on - so I have bare legs and sandals all year. And cold feet.

MarieDeGournay · 08/02/2025 12:37

And cold feet.
Oh Woley that's awful!
I suppose you've been through all the sartorial options.. The thought of a fellow-Stockinger's feet being cold is just wrongSad

At least they are always toasty warm at the open fires in the Bluestocking n'est-ce pas?Smile

Some people are no better than wild beasts. I've been eating fewer carbs all week in an attempt to reduce knee pain, and that is just cruel.

otoh, my knees are a bit better and I am going to have some mashed potato with dinner.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/02/2025 16:23

I am having a bit of a sod-it weekend, with regards to the diabetes. I’m not going completely mad, but I am having some treats.

Frankly, I need some chocolate to cheer me up after the fiasco of Wales’ defeat by Italy in the rugby. When I was a kid, Wales were pre-eminent in rugby - now they are playing like a school side, not an international one.

You can post it now!

Necklace with earrings! So excited we can post photos. It was my wedding anniversary yesterday so I was out. And then a book nook model arrived this afternoon, so I've been busy

Very lovely, Myrtle! The combination of the deep rich matte colour of the beads and the little gold [ I assume 'gold'😉] beads in between is really successful.
Beautiful!
