"The stage production, which is set to debut at the Edinburgh Fringe, has already caused outrage over a working title which labelled the gender-critical Harry Potter author a c----."

"The production is yet to cast any of the female roles, including that of Rowling herself."

"Actors have been found for male leads, who will portray Harry Potter cast members Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe."

"It is understood that 30 actresses have turned down the role of Rowling in the play, and 60 have refused the part of Watson, while agencies representing aspiring female stars have been nervous to put their clients forward for the project.

There is some suggestion that the actress may have ideological misgivings about the play, or be concerned about a potential backlash.

It has been suggested by producers that some actresses may not want to appear in a play critiquing Rowling and ruin their chances of appearing in the lucrative new Harry Potter TV series on the Max streaming service."

It's clearly less trendy, for the women at least, to be on board with bashing JKR.

Or maybe they just don’t want to do it. Maybe because they support her.

AstonUniRank · 13/06/2024 15:59

Why the fuck do they need a 'woman' to play JKR? Bit terfy.

PurpleSparkledPixie · 13/06/2024 16:02

I'm very surprised they aren't casting transwomen in these roles. Surely they would love to stick two fingers up at her, plus... it's not as if we can tell they aren't real women (allegedly).

Wouldn't Miss Suzie/Eddie like the lead role?

Smartiepants79 · 13/06/2024 16:02

Surely there are few nice men who would like to do it?? Put them in a dress and voila! You’ve got a woman! Problem solved.

NitroNine · 13/06/2024 16:04

Just in case we require a copy at some point - When in doubt, go to the library.

Also: hahahahahaha. Ahahahahahahaha. And a brief chorus of “Rowling is Our Queen”.

MinnieCauldwell · 13/06/2024 16:04

Izzard should play Watson; I'd pay money to see that

Beat me to it!

It could end up being hilarious… would be an improvement on the current intentions of those producing it!

LonginesPrime · 13/06/2024 16:11

Surely this is a non-issue as Eddie Izzard can just play all the roles?

I love the fact they can't work out why women don't want to shit on JKR and have assumed that all the women must have declined because all 90 of them are desperate for a part in Harry Potter - presumably their reasoning as to why the men aren't concerned about not being cast in Harry Potter is because there are no male roles in Harry Potter. Oh wait...

lechiffre55 · 13/06/2024 16:12

I would pay money ( to a charity ) to watch it too.
A bunch of stupid looking blokes slagging off JKR, what a novel concept.

I wonder what Sir Ian McKellen thinks about this play being performed in the theatre named after him.

KTheGrey · 13/06/2024 16:40

The rationalisation is hilarious. Clearly none of the men involved can understand that any woman would want to have rights, or not want to be in a second rate piece of agit-prop. Women are so mysterious and incomprehensible.

Chersfrozenface · 13/06/2024 16:41

Why can't they cast transwomen, indeed.

Or non-binary actors.

Or men.

What's wrong with them?

Yes, I don't understand why they haven't cast MTFs? What could be the difference?

What's a "female cast", Bazza? I don't quite know what you mean, can you explain?
