https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/06/13/scores-actresses-turn-down-roles-play-critical-jk-rowling

"The stage production, which is set to debut at the Edinburgh Fringe, has already caused outrage over a working title which labelled the gender-critical Harry Potter author a c----."

"The production is yet to cast any of the female roles, including that of Rowling herself."

"Actors have been found for male leads, who will portray Harry Potter cast members Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe."

Interesting that he knows exactly what a woman (actress) is and EXACTLY what a penis looks like.

Is this not the point JKR has been making all along ? Maybe the play is a cynical grab for attention.

JohnnyRememberMe · 13/06/2024 18:12

Fantastic

If you read the original thread about this play you will see it is anything but that. Link on page 1.

And the fact that they have persisted with this which is viciously anti woman, despite not being to get it on stage for months, shows how adamant they that she should never be forgiven for speaking up for women's sex based rights, and worse still not been the be kind motherly figure that the poor fragile young cast (who have parasitically got careers because of her) "deserve".

You really need the context of how this sexist shit came into being.

OhcantthInkofaname · 13/06/2024 18:23

Good for those actresses!

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 13/06/2024 18:25

Why are you being condescending? I read that thread and article, no need to explain to me why it's sexist.

It's equally harmful whether he believes his own bullshit or not. My somewhat facetious point (because sometimes the best defense is laughing at these fools) is that he doesn't even have intellectual integrity.

FKAT · 13/06/2024 18:29

I'm really confused. I read on X this morning that Warners are unable to cast anyone in the Harry Potter series because of JKR*

But here is a chance to be in play sticking it to her and they are turning down that as well?

*of course they are, because in this time of TV production slowdown, defunding of theatres and AI, actors are always turning down lucrative blockbuster franchises.

I wasn't.

I didn't understand your point in relation to the purpose of the play.

timenowplease · 13/06/2024 18:37

I think Emma Watson should play Emma Watson. That would really send a strong message.

GalacticTowelMaster · 13/06/2024 18:39

AstonUniRank · 13/06/2024 15:59

Why the fuck do they need a 'woman' to play JKR? Bit terfy.

🤣 love it

BettyFilous · 13/06/2024 18:39

lechiffre55 · 13/06/2024 16:12

I would pay money ( to a charity ) to watch it too.
A bunch of stupid looking blokes slagging off JKR, what a novel concept.

It could be a new post modern panto classic. Cast to JKR: “you’re an awful transphobe.” Terfy audience members: “OH NO SHE ISN’T!” And so on.

dougalfromthemagicroundabout · 13/06/2024 18:41

AColdClearDrink · 13/06/2024 15:55

Or maybe they just don’t want to do it. Maybe because they support her.

This would be my guess.

The men appearing in it are providing a handy list for any female directors of who are misogynistic dicks though.

heathspeedwell · 13/06/2024 18:46

It's almost as if women understand the issues better than men. And so women are taking an ethical stance.

Yeah, that post is from the delightful Jeffrey Marsh, and even he had to admit it was rumour and conjecture. Basically - total bollocks, pretending to himself and his little echo chamber that this fairytale is real.

"It has been suggested by producers that some actresses may not want to appear in a play critiquing Rowling and ruin their chances of appearing in the lucrative new Harry Potter TV series on the Max streaming service."
Because this one series is the only work that is going? Of course it isn't! Like the delightful Jeffrey, they're saying what they want to be true, because 'repeating a lie until people believe the lie' is such a well-worn tactic of the TRAs. There will be loads of individual reasons why these individual actresses don't want the gig. Although, ninety actresses; that's a lot of reasons. Maybe there's a bit of overlap in their individual reasonsGrin.

These producers refusing to take responsibility for so many actresses turning them down, preferring to blame something outwith their control - par for the course, really, isn't it? (I expect the script is shit too.)

Really, they should put their money where their mouth is and cast transwomen in the parts. Very transphobic of them for this to not even have occurred to them. VERY transphobic!

Ah, you know, I'd forgotten about our wee tambourine-bashing weirdo. I wonder where they is now?

MinorDisaster · 13/06/2024 19:11

I'd rather like to think that there's a scriptwriter or two working flat out right now to draft a play based on 'The Woman Who Wouldn't Wheesht' ready for when Kaplan's production company have to give up their August booking at the Ian McKellan Theatre.

The hoards of talented GC actresses wanting great parts for women (ie the ones who've refused to go anywhere near the current, struggling production) would be lining up to audition for the Wheesht rescue bid. Given the sales of the book, tickets would be sold out before they even start casting!

mrshoho · 13/06/2024 19:47

Well done to all the actors who have rejected this play. There's certainly power in numbers.

Jk has already said its bs

FKAT · 13/06/2024 19:52

This is a small scale Edinburgh fringe production which pays 'industry standard' (ie minimum). The absolute hubris of the producer thinking they are in the same casting pool as Warner Bros' Harry Potter franchise. 😂

Maybe Emma Watson will be interested? She likes to get the boot in when she can.

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 13/06/2024 20:03

I want to see it with Eddie Izzard playing JKR and that chap who got his dick out and slapped it on the piano keys playing Emma.

WallaceinAnderland · 13/06/2024 20:14

I'm not surprised women don't want misogynistic roles tbh.

I don't think a scriptwriter is required. They could just use transcripts from various employment tribunals

That is actually a brilliant idea.

Could some of the legal bods do cameos?
