This talk show might be of interest to French speaking MNetters, sorry can't find English subtitles.
Paris's virtue signalling seems to have backfired.

Well done to the Parisian authorities for publicising this important book, gratis, to boot!

ArabellaScott · 19/04/2024 16:32

That clip is brilliant, OP, thanks for sharing! Three raging French women, two very uncomfortable bros flanking her while she rages about the female penis.

4 copies left, now! Get 'em while they're chaud!

ProfessorPeppy · 19/04/2024 16:38

Dora is very cool, isn’t she? She says that she was cancelled for discussing female biology and refusing to refer to the clitoris as a female penis 😨 she lost most of her contracts due to haranguing by TRAs.

I agree that the French are far more material reality-based than most in the West. Laicité is really fundamental to their world view.

Yet, there are violent trans activists who have attacked feminists there, too.

D'accord! I humbly accept that my acquaintances in France aren't wholly representitive of their countrymen, but there definitely isn't the same kind of TWAW, thought-termination that there is in the UK.

It is worrying that TRA violence is increasing, hopefully that can be stopped before "decapitate TERFs" makes its way there...

FestiveAuntFanny · 19/04/2024 16:54

Both Stern and Moutot have put up with a lot of shit in the last few years and have been badly let down by quite a lot of female feminist intellectuals here.

It's interesting how the different media landscape, different intellectual tradition and the lack of a JKR-type figure has formed how this has all played out.

Insulation from some of the more batshit American 'intellectual' writings has helped a bit but you do get radio4 equivalent programs on Judith Butler. At least being 'kind' isn't really programmed into french women in the same way!

Purely anecdotally the only 'trans' kids at my kids school came from US or English schools and their teachers (apart from the English one) resolutely refer to them by their original names. They are all classic slightly weird lesbian girls of course poor things.

My A-level French allowed me to get about 50 - 75% of the studio discussion and it was very interesting. The phone-in part was a bit too fast and colloquial for me to get. But I think it’s great to see Marguerite and Dora on a mainstream show having a serious discussion. I really hope their book does well. They’ve both suffered a lot of abuse, some of it physical, for stating their perfectly valid views in the public sphere.

ArabellaScott · 19/04/2024 17:11

AT about 18.35 there's a phone in, with 'Beatrix'. Recommend.

From the little bit I understood of both callers, and from their demeanour (and that of the studio guests in response) I got the feeling that Operation Laissez-parler was in full effect 😁

It's not a mainstream publisher. It's a tiny indie which I've never come across before, but it seems to have strong far right links (a book prefaced by Philippe de Villiers, FFS, and Zoé Sagan who is close to QAnon[. Marion Maréchal Le Pen has been photographed reading it, which is not a good thing.

ArabellaScott · 19/04/2024 17:54

Authors can't control who reads their books.

Well, if the mainstream bien-pensant publishers won't touch it, are the authors supposed to go "Oh, well, it can't be published, then"?

unwashedanddazed · 19/04/2024 18:15

Really hope we can have an English translation. I would love to read a feminist perspective into how trans ideology in institutions.

HumanBurrito · 19/04/2024 18:23

@ArabellaScott my point was more about instrumentalisation. That said, personally I'd rather not be published than be published by a publisher with far-right links.

So someone who has an important message to convey should accept being silenced.

Got it

Marguerite Stern has been targeted by some very threatening TRAs in the past. At one point they defaced a memorial made by mothers to babies who had died as a result of male violence.

https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marguerite_Stern

https://reduxx.info/france-trans-activists-destroy-feminist-mural-to-infant-victims-of-abusive-brain-trauma/

The collage was trashed. Literally trashed,” she says, noting that her camerawoman lived close to the mural, and had caught a male and female destroying the memorial on the night of July 13. “She didn’t [shy away], she went to go and ask them why they were destroying a memorial to the [deceased] babies.”
The director then states that her camerawoman was told by the vandals that the collage was created by “transphobic feminists.”

They didn’t care that this memorial was for the grieving mothers. They don’t care about the memory of those babies who died in excruciating pain … they just ransacked it.”

What staggeringly self centred little shits they were.

HumanBurrito · 19/04/2024 18:33

Not wirking with a publisher with far right links is not equivalent to being silenced. It has never been easier in history to self-publish, for instance. I am on the GC side but I don't think getting into bed with the far right is a good look.

1Week · 19/04/2024 18:43

Far Right links.... far right links 😱

I'm really starting to depise the left for lumping everyone centrist and moderate right in with the far right.

I presume other publishers are quite happy with this ideology pushing men’s wishes and entitlements through the abuse of women’s and children’s rights. Amazing, isn’t it? I bet they even have notions of themselves as promoters of ‘human’ rights; in the broad sense of covering all humans. They are only pushing for the men, though.

-They’re taking the side of anti-scientific, experimental and damaging interventions on children’s bodies. To give cover to adult men’s claims.
-They are tangentially complicit in making it easier for men to assault and rape women and children
-They are giving support to a movement which in reality takes away opportunities in public life for women and girls. In sports and many other arenas. Generally making society a colder house for women and girls.

I’d be surprised they have the brass necks to try and point a finger at others as objectionable in this fight against such misogyny. Mind you, their other four would quite rightly be pointing back at themselves.

Cailleach1 · 19/04/2024 18:48

The Taliban self identify as the good fellows, too. Authoritarian movements who push for the lads over the rights of women. I wouldn’t be giving any credence to their position of ‘goodies’ after their alignment with misogyny on this.

Given the appalling news from the US, Sweden and Germany, I’m glad to hear France might be joining Terf Island on the naughty step.

quizzys · 19/04/2024 19:12

I could only follow bits of it, but enough to show me that the writer and her co panellist (name?) meant business. Everything that has been discussed on here was mentioned, sport, hormone blockers, bodily mutilation (mastectomy) and so on. If only there were subtitles, as I can read French far better than I can understand the spoken word!

Anyway, I wonder does anyone know who the person is in between the two men? As others have said, the mens' body language said it all for me anyway, as I was not able to follow much of what they actually said.

I hope there will be an English version of the book at some stage.

HumanBurrito · 19/04/2024 19:22

Marguerite Stern has tweeted a subtitled version of at least part of the interview.
