This talk show might be of interest to French speaking MNetters, sorry can't find English subtitles.
Paris's virtue signalling seems to have backfired.

It's like banning records, isn't it? They all hit the top ten!

StephanieSuperpowers · 19/04/2024 09:42

Well that was unlucky. Who would have thought it could happen?

SinnerBoy · 19/04/2024 09:43

Perhaps they are TERFy Fifth Columnists?

The rection to lots of the gender issues in France has been interesting. My partner's family moved to France (not Paris, though) 20 or so years ago, and all of their friends were deeply interested in the coverageof the Cass report, horrified that the UK had fallen so far, and couldn't understand that there would be hospital units dedicated to this, even (especially?) from a family with an adult gay son.

There does seem to be a more materialist rational streak in the French national psyche, and it is encouraging that there has been such a grass-roots response to the banning of this book advert.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/04/2024 09:51

Pity there’s no English/Kindle edition, I would love to read a French take on this.

Doing even better today on Amazon.fr

Thanks OP, I studied french as part of my Uni degree but to say I'm a but rusty would be an understatement but everyone spoke so clearly (except for scolding turtleneck man) that it was easy to understand. Love that the woman on the panel was supportive of the authors, had clearly read the book and made some great points.

On the amazon page all the verified purchase reviews are 5 stars and none of the 1 star reviews are purchasers

Marguerite Stern has been targeted by some very threatening TRAs in the past. At one point they defaced a memorial made by mothers to babies who had died as a result of male violence.

https://reduxx.info/france-trans-activists-destroy-feminist-mural-to-infant-victims-of-abusive-brain-trauma/

The collage was trashed. Literally trashed,” she says, noting that her camerawoman lived close to the mural, and had caught a male and female destroying the memorial on the night of July 13. “She didn’t [shy away], she went to go and ask them why they were destroying a memorial to the [deceased] babies.”
The director then states that her camerawoman was told by the vandals that the collage was created by “transphobic feminists.”

They didn’t care that this memorial was for the grieving mothers. They don’t care about the memory of those babies who died in excruciating pain … they just ransacked it.”

I think as well in interviews the authors do a great job of equating it all to religion and an equivalence to religious belief which anyone whos spent any time in France knows how much the French pride themselves on their secularity.

That is the TRA mindset right there. Doesn’t matter what you do, doesn’t matter who you hurt just as long as you signal your virtue. Deemed to have stepped the wrong side of the line? You deserve everything you get.

Anyway, banning things never works. Just ask Barbara Streisand.

miri1985 · 19/04/2024 10:40

Heres an article about it in English, it got taken down by a drag queen tweeting the Mayor of Paris saying it was hateful. No investigation into the content of the book seems to have been done https://www.barrons.com/news/paris-takes-down-ads-for-transphobic-book-2f39fc81

I still don't get whats transphobic or hateful about the advertisement, is it calling it an ideology thats supposedly wrong?

I would go further than ‘it doesn’t matter who you hurt’ to suggest that hurting people who most people would consider ought to be protected is perhaps the point: it shows you will stop at nothing and is therefore a much scarier threat than if you just attacked someone who was had put herself in the front line or who could take it.

#operationletthemspeak becoming an international exercise, then.

Helleofabore · 19/04/2024 10:46

Go Marguerite! I hope that this gets her even more air time.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/04/2024 11:03

Being literally the number 1 book on a country’s entire Amazon is a heck of an achievement.
I wonder if it’s with a big publisher or if she has had similar issues to the Anglophone writers on getting a publisher.

334bu · 19/04/2024 12:05

Not only selling well but I've just checked ratings for the talk show and even if nobody else buys the book, a lot of French people will now know about the issue.

Gosh, the body language of the two blokes on the panel as the woman in the middle is speaking. Obviously having done some research based on facts. At one stage, they both had one arm folded across and the both hiding their mouths as she spoke. She wasn’t taking any guff off them! Were they lamenting that women were able to speak in public? Ayatollah like. I think the chappie in the polo definitely knows what women are; they are the ones he has to chide.

My french is so rusty. Maybe some kind francophone will elucidate.

Just horrible. I wish humans could stop prioritising faith to ideologies over real human lives.

Yet, there are violent trans activists who have attacked feminists there, too.
