Absolutely shocking that a teenager should be giving birth in prison.

What this demonstrates is that women are treated like dog poo on the underside of your shoe.

On remand for a robbery charge and a care leaver.

Shocking and disgraceful.

Bronzefield

it’s shameful

I wrote to my MP about this when it happened. It shames us as a country

Fucking hell, just when you think you've heard the worst treatment of women and girls by the authorities then this...

Rianna and Aisha were both horrifically failed. How that man and any others in the control room could have ignored her urgent pleas for help, just so so wrong.

Every aspect of Rianna's background should have increased people's care for her and her baby, rather than decreased people's compassion for them.

endofthelinefinally · 28/07/2023 18:21

That poor, poor girl. Just a child herself really. I am so appalled at what she went through, and losing her baby in such horrific circumstances. Those prison staff deserve the worst possible consequences for their actions. Pure evil. How on earth will Rianna ever recover from that?

DelphiniumBlue · 28/07/2023 18:24

Who are these people who ignore cries for help from a woman in labour?? Callous doesn't even begin to describe it. There's more than one person involved here, deliberate and systematic failure of safeguarding systems. The report says that the communications line was actually turned off!
I think not only the staff directly concerned should lose their jobs, but also the governor, and the on-duty governor and the minister responsible for prisons. They should be made to publicly account for their actions. This wasn't just a failure to act, it was knowingly failing to provide the appropriate care and support, choosing to ignore pleas for help.
We are supposed to be a civilised country.

IcakethereforeIam · 28/07/2023 18:28

Charges should be brought. This is horrific. That poor child, that poor baby.

I hope those who ignored the mother, who had to cut the umbilical cord with her teeth, are sent to jail for a very long time.

Disgusting!!!

OvaHere · 28/07/2023 18:35

I heard this on the radio earlier. Just horrific. Agree that charges should be brought. There's no justification for this happening.

Whatwouldscullydo · 28/07/2023 18:46

Prison is the punishment. Staff who think they have the right to implement their own punishments by ignoring calls for medical help etc should join the prisoners on their side of the bars. That poor girl and baby. So easily could have been 2 deaths not 1. Do your jobs ffs

mrshoho · 28/07/2023 18:57

Shocking reading this. This poor girl was failed over and over. Words fail me that people thought this was am acceptable way to care for her.

She was on remand, so not even supposedly being ‘punished’.

Lwrenagain · 28/07/2023 19:02

This legitimately is the most awful fucking tragic story I've read for a very long time.

It's the levels of systemic failures occurring here I'm not sure how you even process the feelings of anger and sadness about it.

That poor wee lass, her baby may have been the only family she ever would have had. And that poor little baby girl. It could make a stone heart bleed that.

I've worked with care leavers and they're so utterly vulnerable, to imagine the life she's had and then had to deliver a baby she'll not ever know was still born or not alone in a cell, it's fucking barbaric. It's like a game of thrones storyline it's so devastating.

Just wish that poor lass gets the most help with her fucked up life to at least live some of it with both access to mental health care and some financial support.

Backstreets · 28/07/2023 19:05

That is inhumane! Poor girl

risefromyourgrave · 28/07/2023 19:09

JFC, that poor girl, I hope the bloke who ignored her first call gets the book thrown at him.

Transparent2 · 28/07/2023 19:11

Terrible.

ParisP · 28/07/2023 19:17

so heartbreaking

Hibiscrubbed · 28/07/2023 19:18

Bronzefield is a dangerous place to be.

AndrexPuppy · 28/07/2023 19:19

Horrifying. The prison system is an unsafe wreck for all concerned.

endofthelinefinally · 28/07/2023 19:21

There are no excuses. I was a midwife back in the 70s. We looked after the women from the local prison and we gave good care, as we did with all the women in our care. I think things have got much, much worse.

AmbleInAnnBoleyn · 28/07/2023 19:23

The prison services badly neglected her. Their biases are showing - young female care leaver, must be a tart and thus deserving of all she gets.

Utter bastards from top to bottom.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 28/07/2023 19:30

My god that poor woman. No more than a girl and left to give birth like an animal.
Another example of the system utterly failing women of colour.

I hope people lose their jobs over this. We are seeing a pushback against the culture of misogyny in the police force, hopefully the prison system will come under review too.

AnnieKayTee · 28/07/2023 19:30

This could of easily been two deaths. Being ignored for so long while in labour and giving birth is absolutely dangerous to the baby and the mother.

I hope the officers who ignored her get a prison sentence for the death of this poor woman's daughter.

Boiledbeetle · 28/07/2023 19:40

Considering They knew she was pregnant how could they think it OK to ignore her calling for help?. How much of a click cruel selfish bastard do you have to be to do that?

nocoolnamesleft · 28/07/2023 19:41

Appalling. She must have been terrified. And to lose her baby like that, with no help coming. Surely the bastards who ignored her pleas for help should be charged with something.
