When I read about this earlier today I wept for that poor woman and her baby. Absolutely heartbreaking and horrifying.

Why were males the guards for a pregnant teenage girl?

She was 18 and in an adult prison. Was she supposed to be in a different type of prison?

She should not have been in any prison, but if she had to be locked anywhere it should have been in a mother and baby unit. And no one should have told her they’d take her baby away. ( Unless there us something not being reported.)

The prison officials and guards on duty should be in prison for gross negligence and murder.

www.gov.uk/life-in-prison/pregnancy-and-childcare-in-prison these are the rules. Shocking. I'm appalled as I'm pregnant and getting lots of support and this poor woman had no one. She gave birth alone and In so much pain; and the baby had complications. Absolutely awful.

BenWeatherstaff · 28/07/2023 21:41

I’m sorry but nah, have you seen the way people on here behave if they get a whiff a poster might be have low socio-economic status?

Plus the standard response to single mums- ‘stupid choice to get pregnant by that man wasn’t it?’ Plus the glee with which posters jump on anyone who admits wrongdoing, even something as common and frequently excused as speeding.

It’s appalling what happened to that woman and her baby, and she should have support to repair her life, but mumsnet is very far from being the answer.

You're not wrong and the post just before yours supports your point with its lack of empathy.

She shouldn't have been in prison.
She's still a teenager just out of the care system. The poor girl.

Pinkespressomachine · 28/07/2023 21:57

I’ve worked with so many care leavers like this young lady. They’ve already been failed by society and then this poor girl is forced to ensures this abject misery? Anyone involved in her supposed ‘care’ who failed her that night should be strung up. I would rarely speak this way but the prison staff have blood on their hands.

Bastards

MillenialAvocado · 28/07/2023 22:10

I can't even imagine how terrified she must've been. This makes me sick with anger. There are no words.

Utterly horrendous. My heart goes out to Rianna and her baby Aisha. No one should have to go through that.

Delphinium20 · 28/07/2023 22:17

Oh. This is making me weep. I hope all responsible have serious repercussions. Manslaughter (is this a thing in the UK?) at minimum.

ScrollingLeaves · 28/07/2023 22:17

Sorry, posted too soon.

Signed.

Evasmissingletter · 28/07/2023 22:18

I read the headline and automatically assumed it was about a country with poor human rights records for prisoners like Bolivia. Poor girl let down in every aspect of her life. RIP little one .

Badbudgeter · 28/07/2023 22:22

So awful, I remember this story at the time. I don’t think women in late stages of pregnancy belong in prison. There’s a small prison close-ish to me that’s for vulnerable women with short sentences with a strong emphasis on rehabilitation within the community. If women must be kept in prison during late pregnancy then somewhere like that with attached maternity care.

Hibiscrubbed · 28/07/2023 22:26

Certain types of men are drawn to working with, and exercising their ‘power’ over, vulnerable women. Unfortunately, the prison service and police force are two places they are drawn. And they get away with it.

This is a board for Women and Mother's. I feel real rage reading about this poor, poor girl.

Can't we do more? I want something to happen to these inhumane bastards that made her suffer like this.

Nowthenhere · 28/07/2023 22:47

Women are treated poorly during labour I think. Information about birth is rarely discussed in detail including what you can decline and risks involved until you're actually pregnant.

This puts all women on a back foot, especially young women who were a child a few years before.

This puts women who were within the care system at an even greater disadvantage because of all the trauma that goes with being independent of parent care too early.

Prisons are no place for pregnant women. When someone commits a crime and has a mental health problem, they often go to hospital under police guard and assess for mentioning etc. Why can't women who are pregnant go straight to some kind of maternity section under police guard? No mater how pregnant you are?

The whole system failed this baby. The police on duty should be arrested for manslaughter.

DuckyShincracker · 28/07/2023 22:50

The male prison officer that ignored her cries for help should get manslaughter for the death of the baby. Disgusting abomination of a human he is. This is disgraceful where are the politicians as there obviously needs to be change? The costs involved in providing this sub standard care are eye watering. How are they getting away with it? There must be some sort of standard the prison system is held up to?

This organisation helps women in prison.

There are ways to help - becoming a birth companion, donating, volunteering on the helpline, etc.

I haven’t read the full thread yet. I was in bronzefield recently on remand. It was an entirely life changing experience and on my release, MN is cited in disclosure from the CPS! Bizarre.

Pregnant women should never be in prison. Ever.

HopityHope · 28/07/2023 22:58

The person that ignored her request for medical help and then hung up on her shouldn’t have been kept working and they (speaking to a police officer friend) would actually be facing charges themselves for that.
