Brighton NHS trust recommends drug-induced male breastfeeding in their maternity protocols

https://www.bsuh.nhs.uk/maternity/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2021/01/MP005-Perinatal-Care-for-Trans-and-Non-Binary-People.pdf

This is part of their maternity protocols for perinatal care. In the Infant feeding section:

"5.5.7 Non-gestational parents may wish to participate in feeding their
infants using their own bodies. Cis women who have previously breastfed may have the most success in relactating. Trans women and cis women who have not been pregnant may also be able to induce lactation to some extent. Methods for inducing lactation include using galactagoues and physical stimulation. Alternatively, some families choose to use supplemental nursing systems with expressed milk or formula."

They cite this website in the reference list: http://www.milkjunkies.net/2013/05/trans-women-and-breastfeeding-personal.html

Notably they do not cite any source which has tested the composition of any such male secretions for safety and nutritional value.

And Jeremy Hunt is wondering why everyone thinks this country is going down the can...

ValancyRedfern · 20/05/2023 12:03

After the utterly abysmal support I received to breast feed, which left me suicidal and wanting to chuck my daughter out the window, this makes me insanely angry.

FrancescaContini · 20/05/2023 12:03

What kind of artificially created, disgusting chemical gunk is going to come out of a nipple, whether male or female, that hasn’t been part of the process of pregnancy and childbirth, for God’s sake?

I’d sooner blitz up a McDonald’s Happy Meal and give it to a newborn in a bottle than that.

What the hell is going on in the Brighton health trust??

IWilloBeACervix · 20/05/2023 12:10

It’s the motivations that are wrong here.

when it’s either surrogate mothers or men pretending to be mothers. They’re not doing it because they believe in breastfeeding or providing the baby with breast milk. They’re doing it to lay claim to the baby.

They could get the mother to breast feed the baby. They could keep the baby with its mother, in the case of surrogacy, or pay her to produce milk to the. Be bottle-fed. They don’t do this because it’s not about the baby. It’s about them.

I have a family member whose stepmother claimed to have given birth to them. The real mother was never allowed to be mentioned. Obviously, they are very screwed up.

megletthesecond · 20/05/2023 12:13

So women aren't allowed pain relief and loads of other medication post birth but men can pump themselves full of whatever they fancy.

Sallyh87 · 20/05/2023 12:13

Not mention thought given to the babies in this situation. This is just so creepy! Weird men.

My Autistic Ds was born with tongue tie. Not dx by NHS. We struggled with b/f. I was given no help or advice at ALL. He ended up severely jaundiced. I bought a pump, did all I could, but when he became 'failure to thrive' issue I put him onto formula, was then given omeprazole etc as he couldn't tolerate it (GERD, query surgery for pylohric stenosis). Eventually he was on goats milk, then weaned early. Awful time. And NO HELP. Yet, NHS funds for This?
It is utterly wrong headed.

It is extra outrageous when there sadly are so many stories like yours.

Where is the magic money tree that suddenly exists to fund shit like this but NOT help in situations like yours?

My eldest had jaundice after being born by emergency caesaerean. I had no help in getting up and to his cot when I had to feed him every 2. hour to establish routine and flow for 4 days. I had a few midwives yell at me for pulling the cord to have some help when I was crying with exhaustion. Major surgery just had to be coped with 🤷🏽‍♀️
This was 20 years ago, mind.

Still, so many stories and then this fuckery pops up and there’s mountains of dosh.
Makes me proper cross.

Madamecastafiore · 20/05/2023 12:42

It would be child abuse in my book. Both parents should be prosecuted if this ever happens.

Gettingbysomehow · 20/05/2023 09:44

I worked for that trust for a short while, they are absolutely bat shit crazy.

Note to self - never move to Brighton. Encourage friends in that vicinity to move away.

The NHS is in tatters.
Old people are lying on the floor waiting eight hours for an ambulance to take them in with a fractured femur.
There are countless delays and waiting lists.
You can't see a GP.
But money is being spent on this!!!!!!!!
I'm disgusted.
Who makes these decisions

Lorrymum · 20/05/2023 12:57

Who on earth made this decision? Why was it agreed? Is it being implemented?
The NHS has provided zero support to my niece and her new baby. No health visitor visits, only telephone consultations etc.
I can't believe what Im reading!

Er…. It’s the guidelines they’ve always had for women who adopt or use a surrogate mother. I’ve never seen people being so up in arms about it.

They’ve just added transwomen to the lot. I have health concerns around that (due to the high level of hormones etc….) but seriously, how many transwomen do you think are going to bf like this ever? As described, it’s hard enough for a woman who has lactated before. But a transwoman?

And you're okay with this.
Wow.

This.

I'm afraid this sort of shit will hasten the end of the NHS.

Because yes, it's underfunded but when the funds that are available instead of being used for more nurses, paramedics, or to help new Mums are spent on this and the 'diversity' managers then no-one can really argue that there is mismanagement of the funding. Insane, absurd, anti-science mismanagement on a colossal scale.

JellySaurus · 20/05/2023 13:12

Why would a transwoman want to breastfeed? Validation.

This person claims that the fluid they produced from their breasts was lifesaving for their infant, because the infant's mother was struggling to breastfeed due to retained placenta.

But to be told I could have the opportunity to breastfeed, it was something that was nice to be able to experience as a trans woman.'

Forester1 · 20/05/2023 13:15

This is the most depressing thing to read. I know that it’s been said multiple times but there’s just no focus on what’s best for the baby.

endofthelinefinally · 20/05/2023 13:15

"This person claims that the fluid they produced from their breasts was lifesaving for their infant, because the infant's mother was struggling to breastfeed due to retained placenta".

That statement makes absolutely no sense at all. Complete made up nonsense.

endofthelinefinally · 20/05/2023 13:16

These men are just in a complete fantasy land that just gets more and more sinister.

Faffertea · 20/05/2023 13:20

Men do produce a sort of milk type discharge from their nipples. It is always pathological but sometimes a side effect of necessary medical treatment. It will not have nutritional value to an infant and will not give the baby the passive immunity it gets from breastfeeding from its actual mother.

Domperidone used to be available to buy over the counter but concerns raised by the MHRA mean it is now prescription only and when prescribed dire warnings pop up about not using it longer than 3 days. Including when used to treat chemotherapy related nausea/vomiting.

For actual women, there are better ways to try an induce lactation than Domperidone because our bodies naturally produce more oxytocin when we see, smell and hear our babies. Men, of course, don’t.

bellinisurge · 20/05/2023 13:32

I was treated like a failed mother by the NHS because I struggled to breastfeed. The psychological scars of that lasted for years. I got an "I'm sorry you feel like that " letter when I complained. This shit disgusts me. I hate to think of other new mothers in my position now being treated like that and then seeing this bollocks.

bellinisurge · 20/05/2023 13:33

There's a reason why they didn't say to my baby's dad "here, have some drugs and you do it".

piedbeauty · 20/05/2023 13:37

Fucking HELL. The NHS is actually promoting this absolute shit?? It would be Brighton.

Has nobody thought of the welfare of the baby here?

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 20/05/2023 13:42

How the fuck is this in the baby's best interests?
The world is going mad.

I totally agree . I had problems as my son was premature and I desperately wanted to breast feed . I got given a milking machine and no other help. This sounds like discrimination against women to me .

itsmylife7 · 20/05/2023 13:50

My real concern is who in power is allowing and agreeing that this is normal ?

Hiding in very plain sight. as for the Mothers who allow this shit to happen 😡

TheSandgroper · 20/05/2023 13:58

I’m jumping in to appeal to any Western Australians to please have your say on this. https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=796862405135940&set=a.263657845123068. I have no trust in what our government is trying to do.

This thread is timely for me. I will be using some of the links.
