JKR and new HP HBO tie up

So JKR is going to be executive producer for the multi-million 10 year Harry Potter franchise on HBO. There is no way a company would risk huge amounts of money if there was a significant chance of people boycotting the films due to JKR's pro women's views.

Also her views are so well known that any new actors taking parts presumably cannot suddenly start criticising her after making lucrative careers for themselves after starring in the films!

The TRA's whinging has already started.
They are going to boycott it.

Coz that worked well with the computer game eh..

CaptainWarbeck · 13/04/2023 23:33

Good. I wonder if MPR's podcast giving air to this issue has helped people step away from the immediate cancel reaction of before.

I can't wait for this. Just watched the first two movies with my two DC and you can tell they were made 20 years ago. A TV season for each book is a far better idea then trying to cram everything into a movie.

@Whatsnewpussyhat

I was going to write down the turnover for the franchise but couldn't be arsed with all the zeros.

interestingly Bud light isn't doing too well though....🤔

Me and DD are so excited by this. Will be so much better to have the length of a series to play the stories out in.

mids2019 · 13/04/2023 23:36

@CaptainWarbeck

It gives an opportunity for a new generation of actors and I doubt not many will give up huge opportunities based on supporting dubious ideology.

What’s the deal with Bud Light?

Redshoeblueshoe · 13/04/2023 23:38

This is going to be so good

Doyoumind · 13/04/2023 23:46

The TRAs are always trying to make out she's fucked up her legacy and earning potential despite the fact the HP books continue to sell, the Strike books continue to sell and are popular as TV adaptations, and people flock to HP events, experiences, rides and play games in huge numbers. The money has always been rolling in for her. This news just proves again that just because people say something - that no one likes her anymore - doesn't make it true.

I don't think a series is necessary but I think it will be good anyway.

This is great news. More attention on the very altruistic JKR as the creative originator and less platform for poorly thought out gender identity pronouncements about transitioning children made by Daniel Radcliffe et al who will no longer ‘be’ those iconic Rowling characters in people’s minds..

DrBlackbird · 14/04/2023 00:16

The Independent, which is consistently anti JKR, always refers to her as "a divisive figure as a result of her views on transgender rights".

Odd how the newspaper never suggests that she’s a "divisive figure as a result of her views on women’s rights", but which would be a more accurate representation.

Still not sure what I think about a new series though.

I for one cannot wait to see Harry and Hermione replaced in the public's consciousness. Good riddance to odious talentless twerps Radcliffe and Watson

Fukuraptor · 14/04/2023 04:11

Can't wait to see the books adapted as TV series, really gives them a chance to capture more of the wit, mystery, drama, character development, world building and political commentary things there just wasn't adequate room for in the action movie version of the stories.

I really hope they are done with the caliber of the His Dark Materials adaptions, the books really deserve it.

Personally I also feel the Strike books could have used a longer series format too, more the length of the later Shetland series as I've found them a bit too crammed and zipping through quickly rather than really giving adequate time to explore the suspects and keep the viewer guessing. I don't expect them to be readapted but I hope they give more episodes for the stories going forward.

DarkDayforMN · 14/04/2023 05:35

I guess the massive commercial success of the Hogwarts game, that the TRA “boycott” if anything helped to publicise, may have contributed to this decision.

And haven’t JKR’s Strike novels seen a big boost in sales since the TRAs started boycotting those?

I bet HBO is hoping the TRAs boycott this series with all their might.

I loved the books and felt pretty meh about the movies, at least in part because the child actors were so rubbish. So I’m really looking forward to this series! I’ll be so happy to see the books get the screen adaptation they deserve.

Snapespeare · 14/04/2023 06:13

I have had a joyful time fantasy casting the adult cast and hope that there is no reluctance to participate from people who lack knowledge of the issues.

I was thinking about Doctor Who and how people don't generally think of 'film doctor' Peter Cushing when they think about actors who have played the role. I wish the same decoupling of role and performer for Radcliffe and Watson - Although Cushing is widely accepted as a fine actor...

Florissante · 14/04/2023 07:41

Hooray for JK Rowling! I hope this brings her a new, appreciative audience. (Not that she needs it, being a global phenomenon...)

Yes, it's a real tell isn't it? They have to get it in there. The Guardian did the same and the BBC also went as far as mentioning single sex spaces. 'Tell me you don't know what you're talking about without telling me you don't know what you're talking about', etc.

I think this is great news and looking forward to the series. It's got great potential and so satisfying to see JKR front and centre. It's her creation and still so heavily in demand.

And imagine how bored the public will get if every promo interview with every actor involved turns into an attempted 'transphobic' gotcha. Hopefully by the time it comes out it will be a dying tactic.

This

You need to pull the time scale out a bit, AB stock was inevitably going to drop when it hit $68 (see Jan 2022 peak), if you think that the DM situation has affected $BUD then now could be a good time to buy.

Yes, it's so fucking boring that she can't say anything about WOMEN'S RIGHTS without it being reframed as a statement on transgender rights.

What rights?

What rights do trans people not already have, which everyone else has?

Fluffymule · 14/04/2023 12:51

I think it’s positive that Daniel Ratcliffe and Emma Watson in particular will finally be divorced from the pseudo ownership of JKRs characters the TRA cheerleaders have bestowed on them.

I hope more talented actors will be cast this time (not too difficult imo) allowing a comparison, which in turn might cause the insufferable ingrates to reflect that without JKR, and her personal championing of them in these roles, they would not have any platform upon which to grandstand. Nevermind one to attack and defame her.

IcakethereforeIam · 14/04/2023 13:01

Do you think some of the former child actors from the films are old enough to be recast as adult characters? Or would that be weird and spoil the immersion? The lad who played Dursley seems to have shaped up into a fine actor.

It's likely the titular character and friends will be unknowns, or relatively unknown. Whomever they are, I just hope they get better actors.

MythicalReasonableTwitterUser · 14/04/2023 13:20

I was glad to see the news about this, I was worried that they would ruin the story without JKR's involvement. I thought she she might not want to invest the time into it, since she's so busy with Strike and who knows what else. The movies skipped over so much from the books, so I'm looking forward to a closer rendition. I wonder if any would-be participants in the project are already deleting their social media for fear of being called hypocrites for joining.
