JKR and new HP HBO tie up

So JKR is going to be executive producer for the multi-million 10 year Harry Potter franchise on HBO. There is no way a company would risk huge amounts of money if there was a significant chance of people boycotting the films due to JKR's pro women's views.

Also her views are so well known that any new actors taking parts presumably cannot suddenly start criticising her after making lucrative careers for themselves after starring in the films!

I'm not sure I ever saw any interviews with JKR when the original films came out. Did she have much of a say about casting and screenplay (or was she back at home frantically scribbling away at the rest of the stories)?

Peter Capaldi or David Tennant for Snape, anybody? Or maybe Andrew Scott?

I can't see it being anything other than a huge success with such advances in tech/filmography (the first HP film came out in 2001!).

OMG - Malcolm Tucker as Snape.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 15/04/2023 10:45

No!! Too old!

I've come across my favourite Potter meme again and felt I should share it - it makes me laugh every time!

I think Anne Marie Duff would've been fabulous as Molly at some point, and she's got an incredibly young face so I think she could still pull off playing a woman in her early 40s now. But she'd probably be seen as too old. Love to see her in there in some capacity though, she's brilliant in everything.

raspberrywine · 15/04/2023 11:46

The amount of whinging online about this new tv series - people saying they’re going to boycott it and if you don’t also boycott it you’re a bigot - are actually helping to publicise it.

You know what, let them boycott it because it won't make a scrap of difference. Most of the world will watch it no matter how much they whine. They are a tiny percentage (negligible when you take the whole world into account).

Presumably, tv critics and reviewers will have learnt something from the game critics and reviewers who either ignored or told people not to buy the Legacy game. These up themselves arses got it spectacularly wrong. Because they forgot that people love Harry Potter. The world over.

44PumpLane · 15/04/2023 11:47

I also hope they fix the awful bit in Goblet where the books state that Dumbledore kindly asks Harry if he put his name in the Goblet, yet in the film they have Dumbledore run at Harry aggressively questioning him.

AlpacaMaJammas · 15/04/2023 12:01

What about Rory McCann as Hagrid?

pottydimley · 15/04/2023 12:18

Pudmyboy · 14/04/2023 15:10

I have a personal hope that she finds a starring role for James Dreyfus and gets Glinner on board as a writer......and I am delighted that new actors will efface those 3 ingrates, as hopefully looking more like the characters: Harry having distinctive green eyes was a big part of the book. And being tall!

Great idea! Fingers crossed Star

pottydimley · 15/04/2023 12:20

So sad that Alan Rickman isn't still here to take part.

Aunt Petunia is Lily's younger sister so an actress in her early thirties would be closer to the source (sorry, I'm so nerdy!)

Aunt Petunia is Lily's older sister, but yes, should be in her early to mid thirties at the beginning of the series according to the books!

Oh yeah, hangs head in shame and heads off the Hufflepuff common room...

LaChatte · 15/04/2023 18:12

I don't know who most of these people are (well I probably do but not by their real names). I wonder how long it's going to be until the first episode is released? A year? 2 years?

Twazique · 15/04/2023 18:15

So sad that Alan Rickman isn't here.

I hope they cast the actor that played Nevil Longbottom in one of the roles, I really like him.

That would be nice. As would lots of British actors, mostly unknown or small role ones.

What about Rory McCann as Hagrid?

Oh yes. He was my first thought as well!

If Gwen Christie plays Mme. Maxime it would be rhe Hound and Brienne of fucking Tarth reunited 🤣

My most embarrassing celeb story is about Rickman.

I’m sure any actor following in his footsteps will be incredibly respectful of their predecessors talent.

SomeRolyPolyLittleBatFacedGirl · 15/04/2023 18:46

Greg Davies for Hagrid?

Rory Kinnear should be in there somewhere.

mids2019 · 17/04/2023 23:16

I guess the first HP films had all the great and good from the British film industry and I wonder if that kind of ensemble can ever happen again?

I suspect the new films may be a little more diverse in ethnicity and possibly a couple of hints to gay and lesbian characters (Inc Dumbledore). I also wonder if the cast is to be a little less middle class? I know Hogwarts was meant to based on a traditional English boarding school but will there be some alterations to get a more socially diverse 'feel'?

There’s plenty of excellent British actors that weren’t in the films that would be perfect for the TV series, they weren’t all “used up” in the films! Plus there’s the prospect of new and relatively unknown actors getting their break. I’m looking forward to it very much.

musicalfrog · 18/04/2023 14:17

Exactly @funnelfan the films started being made 20+ years ago. Those lamenting Alan Rickman should remember that even if he were still with us, he'd be the wrong age to reprise that role now anyway.

This is a great opportunity for many actors. So many did not appear in the original films, now is their chance.

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 18/04/2023 14:38

If you think about it, the last major parts in the films would've been cast what, late 00s? There's a lot of talent that's emerged since then in the UK and Ireland, as well as some people who were already established but for whatever reason not involved. People like Cillian Murphy, James McAvoy, Meera Syal etc. And also there's a whole cohort of actors who'd have been the wrong age then. Too old for the kids and too young for the adults.

BigTedLittleTedCardboardBox · 18/04/2023 15:46

I really hope all the castings are age appropriate. No one in their 20s playing a school child, or 45 year olds playing a character that's meant to be 30ish please. A lot of the ideas I've seen for casting seem to be too old for the characters, which over a 10 year run will only intensify the difference.

mids2019 · 18/04/2023 19:01

How are the child part auditions to be held?

Basically 3 lucky child actors are going to be made for life with the associated fame....possibly the most competitive child roles in recent history?

As for the adults a huge range to choose from and a lot of work do or agents! I wonder how much influence on the casting JKR will have?
