JKR and new HP HBO tie up

So JKR is going to be executive producer for the multi-million 10 year Harry Potter franchise on HBO. There is no way a company would risk huge amounts of money if there was a significant chance of people boycotting the films due to JKR's pro women's views.

Also her views are so well known that any new actors taking parts presumably cannot suddenly start criticising her after making lucrative careers for themselves after starring in the films!

I suggest James McAvoy for Snape - but - Chris Ecclestone for Dumbledore if you are in a DW casting moment. Oliver Chris for Lucius Malfoy and WILDCARD Nish Kumar for Hagrid(!) James Acaster for Peeves.

AFAIK both Nish Kumamoto and James Acaster are well on the “ TWAW, shut up horrible transphobes” bandwagon so I wouldn’t want to see them in the series. And presumably they wouldn’t be so hypocritical as to take the roles…

Faffertea · 14/04/2023 18:20

No idea why Kumar changed to Kumamoto- I don’t know who/what that is/means!

The casting for the films was a complete failure. I can’t imagine how they got it so wrong. Also hopefully they’ll ditch that awful music. They really killed the first 3 films with too much 🎵

I saw a couple of the films and the music was the only thing I liked!

Good. I wonder if MPR's podcast giving air to this issue has helped people step away from the immediate cancel reaction of before.

I can't wait for this. Just watched the first two movies with my two DC and you can tell they were made 20 years ago. A TV season for each book is a far better idea then trying to cram everything into a movie.

Totally!

The first two films look really dated now.

Lemony Snicket TV series was much better than the film. Hopefully this will be the same and the new Harry and Hermione will eclipse the old ones!

So pleased to see this. I assume HBO must be pretty confident in the ongoing pulling power of the Harry Potter series if they're going to make a huge financial commitment like this. It's funny, isn't it - it's almost as if all those campaigns to cancel JKR and boycott Harry Potter have had next to no effect.

I had a quick look at HP on Amazon to see whether this was right. If you look at the "Most read" fiction chart (ie people reading books on Kindle Unlimited, rather than the books people are buying), the first seven places are taken by the Harry Potter books, and they have ALL spent 195 weeks on the list:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/charts/2023-04-09/mostread/fiction/ref=dp_chrtbg_dbs_1

I don't think HBO will need to worry about a lack of viewers.

Jared Harris would be good as Dumbledore, I agree.

Who do we think for Bellatrix? Or Voldemort?

Voldemort - Cillian Murphy
Bellatrix - Thadiwe Newton
I have cast Sophie Okendo as Narcissa and Lydia West as Tonks though,

I would LOVE to see Oliver Chris and Sophie Okendo as Lucius and Narcissa. I find them both quite regal.

I will dig out my entire list....

I imagine they would ABSOLUTELY be that hypocritical. :-) I'm sure there will be some amazing gymnastics to ensure they remain ideologically pure though..

Signalbox · 14/04/2023 19:02

Yeah you’re right I was thinking about the 3 main characters.

funnelfan · 14/04/2023 19:08

I would like to see them continue the precedent of the Cursed Child and cast a black actor as Hermione

KalimbaMoon · 14/04/2023 19:18

Daniel Radcliffe never looked anything like my mental image of Harry Potter from the books and that was disappointing. The films didn’t cut it for me anyway as they had to gloss over so much of the good stuff to squeeze in the key plot points. They only scratched the surface IMHO.

I thought the casting of Hermione and Ron was better than Harry (in terms of my mental image, at least) - but the actors’ treatment of JKR since then has put me off them for good! They don’t deserve to be associated with the franchise.

This series is a great opportunity to wipe the slate clean and bring in some new talent that actually appreciates JKR for the amazing creative writer, philanthropist and women’s rights campaigner that she is.

IcakethereforeIam · 14/04/2023 19:22

I find James Acaster really irritating, like Jack Black, OTT, look at meeeee!!! and not as funny as he seems to think he is.

I think Christopher Eccleston would be a good Snape. Alan Rickman is going to be a tough act to follow.

raspberrywine · 14/04/2023 19:26

I'd like Adam Driver for Severus Snape. Snape was only 31 when HP series started.

Tom Felton as Lucius just doesn't work. He just doesn't have the gravitas. But yes, to a cameo.

Sally Hawkins for Trelawny.

Patrick Stewart for Dumbledore

Nicolas Hoult in there somewhere. Snape? Malfoy? Sirius?

ISaySteadyOn · 14/04/2023 19:40

Personally, I think David Tennant would make a good Lupin.

CurlewKate · 14/04/2023 20:00

Is the latest Strike book going to be televised?

Ellmau · 14/04/2023 20:18

Peter Capaldi or David Tennant for Snape, anybody? Or maybe Andrew Scott?

Far too old. Snape was the same age as Lily and James, so only about 21 when Harry was born.

viques · 14/04/2023 20:20

Whatsnewpussyhat · 13/04/2023 23:31

The TRA's whinging has already started.
They are going to boycott it.

Coz that worked well with the computer game eh..

But we know they will be watching it, through their fingers , waiting to pounce on the slightest imagined slur .

raspberrywine · 14/04/2023 20:24

I think the adult characters are going to every hard to cast. I mean Alan Rickman, Ralph Fiennes, David Thewlis, Maggie Smith, Helena B-C, Gary Oldman were stellar.

TangledUpinBlu · 14/04/2023 20:25

I read today (on twitter so no idea how true any of this is) that both of Emma Watson's parents are lawyers, and that one of Daniel Radcliffes parents is a casting director?

Snapespeare · 14/04/2023 20:36

Remus - Iwan Rheon
Sirius - Hans Matheson
Peter Pettigrew - Jim Howick
James (as a twenty year old) no idea!

Lily Potter - Sophie Turner
Vernon Dursley - Daniel Mays
Aunt Petunia - Daisy May Cooper

Arthur Weasley - Arthur Darville (Mark Williams played Rorys dad in an episode of DW)
Molly Weasley - Charlotte Ritchie

Nearly Headless Nick - Simon Farnaby

Rita Skeeter - Lolly Adefope
Filch - Mackenzie Crook

I can continue boring you all with this pretty much indefinitely. :-)

The essence of Peeves is irritation! He'd barely have to act, just deliver the right lines at the right time! ;-)

dimorphism · 14/04/2023 20:41

Sally Hawkins for Trelawny. Patrick Stewart for Dumbledore

Great suggestions. Maybe James Dreyfus could be Fudge instead!

Ben Wishaw for Snape would be good I think - he's an excellent actor and it needs to be someone amazing, and he's young enough. He definitely does nuance and that's needed for Snape.

David Tennant - another great actor but possibly a bit long in the tooth for Snape would be a great Voldemort (you don't need to be a particular age for this role IMO as there will be a lot of makeup). Mind you again, makeup can make actors appear younger, so I wouldn't want to rule him out...

Thandiwe Newton is a bit of an inspired choice for Bellatrix - I like it. Part of me thinks she's simply too pretty but is an excellent actress and presumably the makeup would be fantastic so could be made to look suitably mad. Like Rickman for Snape, following HBC will be hard for anyone though.

Sophie Okendo would be a great Narcissa but I'd still like Tom Felton for Lucius - he did snooty pretty well as Draco and presumably his acting skills have improved since then.

I think I'd like it to be British actors mainly because there is nothing that annoys me more than Americans trying to do a British accent and not quite getting it right.

Kate Winslet (though they'd be lucky to get her) for McGonagall. Although she might be a good Bellatrix too.

Martin Freeman as Arthur Weasley - with a red haired wig obviously!

Nina Wadia might be a good Umbridge.

raspberrywine · 14/04/2023 20:43

No, please carry on. I don't know who most of these actors are so will be looking them up and looking at their work.

Kudos to your name.

dimorphism · 14/04/2023 20:47

Mackenzie Crook is in fact destined to be Filch, surely?

IcakethereforeIam · 14/04/2023 20:50

@Snapespeare omg, when you're right....! I didn't see it like that!

dimorphism · 14/04/2023 20:52

Anna Maxwell Martin for Molly Weasley though would be a bit of a departure from her Motherland role!
