JKR and new HP HBO tie up

So JKR is going to be executive producer for the multi-million 10 year Harry Potter franchise on HBO. There is no way a company would risk huge amounts of money if there was a significant chance of people boycotting the films due to JKR's pro women's views.

Also her views are so well known that any new actors taking parts presumably cannot suddenly start criticising her after making lucrative careers for themselves after starring in the films!

Do you think some of the former child actors from the films are old enough to be recast as adult characters? Or would that be weird and spoil the immersion? The lad who played Dursley seems to have shaped up into a fine actor.

It's likely the titular character and friends will be unknowns, or relatively unknown. Whomever they are, I just hope they get better actors.

It would be nice to see Tom Felton cast. He was about the only younger "actor" who could actually act.

I think it’s positive that Daniel Ratcliffe and Emma Watson in particular will finally be divorced from the pseudo ownership of JKRs characters the TRA cheerleaders have bestowed on them.

I hope more talented actors will be cast this time (not too difficult imo) allowing a comparison, which in turn might cause the insufferable ingrates to reflect that without JKR, and her personal championing of them in these roles, they would not have any platform upon which to grandstand. Nevermind one to attack and defame her.

Really good point. As the three main leads aged in each subsequent film their acting skills, or lack of, became more apparent.

A TV series with actors who can act will be a treat.

Absolutely this.

Can't happen soon enough.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 14/04/2023 14:35

Can't wait for this. Really pleased to see how prominently JKR's name has been placed in all the press releases too.

I think the Hogwarts Legacy "boycott" has probably helped get this made. TRAs threw their rattles as far as they could and yet the game made so, so, so much money. All the foot stamping and name calling and guilt tripping achieved absolutely nothing. All the big wigs at HBO then knew exactly what they were going to get from the transrights crowd, and what the real world impact would be (naff all) going in.

I am very much looking forward to the adaptation so that the books can be explored properly. One of the films (Goblet of Fire, I think) had so much missing that I was a bit baffled as to how anyone who hadn't read the books knew what was going on. I drive my husband batshit when we're watching the films!

I really did try to give the young actors a lot of latitude in terms of their acting but I can barely bring myself to watch the first film as Daniel Radcliffe in particular is just so wooden and stage schooly. I actually think they did get better as the series went on but honestly, it couldn't have got much worse. Emma Watson's over enunciation in the first film is excruciating.

I haven't seen the Potter movies he was in but Freddie Stroma was in some of the later ones as Cormac McLeggan and he's extremely talented. He was most recently Vigilante in Peacemaker and he stole the show. And he doesn't seem to have ever commented on JKR.

I agree.

I was really sad about the omission of SPEW and all the house elves at Hogwarts in GOF.

I think that book in particular really suffered more than any other in terms of how much was cut from it, but OOTP and THBP also lost a lot of their richness.

faffadoodledo · 14/04/2023 14:43

Don't have HBO but will get it.
Don't really like HP (never read them), but will watch to make a point!

Needmoresleep · 14/04/2023 14:45

My upstanding is that Warner Bros who had the origional film rights was bought up by Discover in 2022.

This produced an almost immediate change in approach to JKR. She had been left out of various Harry Potter anniversary things, but senior Discovery execs immediately set about repairing the relationship. Discovery traditionally aims more for the middle American Market.

Looks like it has paid off.

LizzieSiddal · 14/04/2023 14:48

I’m so pleased to hear this, I actually did not enjoy the films.

Anyone else worried for the actors who sign up and the inevitable TRA wrath and cancelling they will be subjected to?

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 14/04/2023 14:52

I think a series per book is a good idea, and would probably fit the length and style of the books much better.

Could they cast Tom Felton as Malfoy's dad?

How can you know you don't like HP if you've never read them?

The books are a million miles better than the films.

No, they'll just do a big mea culpa afterwards for Likes. <cynical>

Can we make sure Neville is in it somehow?

LaChatte · 14/04/2023 15:01

Everyone seems to be focusing on the wrong thing here: it's HBO, how on earth are they going to get all the sex and violence into Harry Potter 😂

Waitwhat23 · 14/04/2023 15:08

I also hope they make James and Lily Potter the right age! In the books, they are 21/22 when they are murdered, only having left school a couple of years before, having had their whole short adulthood under the threat of Voldemort. Death at any age is unspeakably tragic but it had an additional poignancy that they were so young when they died. Then in the films, the actors were clearly in their 30's/40's.

Littlesprouts · 14/04/2023 15:09

I pondered something similar above. Hopefully the pros will outweigh the cons, and the public will be bored stiff of everything being dishonestly framed as 'anti trans' by then.

Pudmyboy · 14/04/2023 15:10

I have a personal hope that she finds a starring role for James Dreyfus and gets Glinner on board as a writer......and I am delighted that new actors will efface those 3 ingrates, as hopefully looking more like the characters: Harry having distinctive green eyes was a big part of the book. And being tall!

I saw the first film when it came out and hated it. Thought it was very badly under written. As well as poorly acted and over directed. I always figured Harry Potter was just overrated like The Emporor's New Clothes. I recently started reading the books with my DS and really enjoyed the first one. Watched the first film when we finished the book and my DS was genuinely really angry about how bad it was and how it hopped from scene to scene with no context. So I could easily see how someone might see the first movie or two and assume they were awful.

DrBlackbird · 14/04/2023 15:16

What rights do trans people not already have, which everyone else has?

@MargotBamborough

I’ve wondered this too.

No specific or actual rights are ever mentioned. It would be helpful if they were. Of course everyone’s rights ought to be respected.

Though, of course, rights will clash. To resolve that we need dialogue.

JustAWeirdoWithNoName · 14/04/2023 15:23

I'm so torn about it (although not because of JKR's supposed transphobia). On the one hand, this is everything I've ever wanted because the later movies left out so much (looking at you in particular, Half Blood Prince), but I think people are interested to see more of the expanding wizarding world - e.g. a TV show about the Hogwarts founders. I think that's partially why Hogwarts Legacy has been so popular, and why the first Fantastic Beasts movie did so well (let's not talk about the second and third movies...)

I do wish that people would stop cancelling celebs for sharing their views - the media can still be good even if you disagree with the author

CampervanKween · 14/04/2023 15:29

They could do with getting Tim.Burton involved, he's done a cracking job with Wednesday. I'm looking forward to seeing this.

orangevelvetshoes · 14/04/2023 15:29

I can't wait for the new series. Fresh faces for HP and away with the riff raff that acted so ungrateful for the opportunities that were presented to them by JKR
Really hope JKR does well out of this.

I'm hopeful that the world building will follow. In the same way we got House of the Dragon after GoT, we could get a couple of series into the HP adaptation, then get a Founders series, then a year or so after that, a Marauders series. With the way streaming services tend to treat big franchises (look at Star Wars and Marvel), it seems to me unlikely they'll just leave it at the seven books/seven series when they could have spin offs, but it also makes sense to start with the main series that everyone knows.

EsmaCannonball · 14/04/2023 16:18

A couple of Harry Potter fans I know are really excited about this. They enjoyed the films but weren't too keen on Daniel Radcliffe's and Emma Watson's acting abilities. Both of them are very much respecters of pronouns but the extreme reaction to JKR has made them begin to tentatively question transactivism. (So thanks, transactivists, for being so batshit.)

I know companies get scared by transactivists into doing some crazily self-destructive things, but has a transactivist boycott ever actually worked? I have a feeling that these people threaten things on Twitter but then don't like missing out or going without. I can't think of a company that ignored their demands that has actually suffered for it.

Jumpersaurus · 14/04/2023 16:23

JKR's stories deserve to be living entities, so it's only right that adaptations should be created for a new generation. So many commentators online seem to miss that this is not a remaking of some popular movies but a new adaptation of the novels, just like a Jane Austen or Roald Dahl novel. It's not even about Radcliffe or Watson, the roles don't belong to them and never will. Them being reminded of this is just a very sweet bonus!
