Would you ever consider a transwoman a woman?

1000 replies

ZeldaFighter · 10/04/2023 18:10

If a person had transitioned from male to female early in life and had lived quietly and unobtrusively as a woman for say 20 or 30 years, would you consider offering that person the status of "womanhood"?

Would you go on a girls night in a group with them?

Would you think differently if the person had had gender reassignment surgery?

What if they did actually pass?

What if they had a husband and kids?

This isn't a gotcha and I don't know the answers. I am instinctively annoyed by the taking away of women's things but I am also dismayed by the hurt and harm potentially caused to trans people. I'm trying to decide my own position and wondering if there are compromise positions. Apologies if this has been asked before and thank you for your thoughts.

Writing under a pen name isn’t pretending to be a man. George Elliot was a pen name used by one of the best woman writers of the 19th century, because she knew her books wouldn’t get taken seriously if she wrote under her real name.

Boiledbeetle · 12/04/2023 00:30

Shock: Imagine writing under a name that's not your actual name!!! Who would do such a heinous thing?

For the record I'm not actually a beetle! I'm certainly not a boiled one!

Would you ever consider a transwoman a woman?

Have they had their penis removed? I think that would be key for me.

That would certainly indicate serious intent - but wouldn't make them a woman. (If a man has an accident that results in him losing his penis does he automatically become a woman? If not, why not?)

SueVineer · 12/04/2023 00:32

No I wouldn’t accept him as a woman as you can’t change sex. Might be friends if I liked him.

Indeed, Sailing! One of the best writers of the 19th century, full stop. And yet for some mysterious reason, Mary Ann Evans felt it necessary to publish using a male name... (For the hard-of-understanding, it wasn't because she was identifying as a man!)

hotdiggetydog · 11/04/2023 23:53

The thing about facts, is that they are quite hard to argue with.

She literally claims to be a man for some of the books she writes.

Still laughing at this attempt.

So all female authors using a male name to enable them to be published is their ‘claims to be men’? What a very sad interpretation of women’s oppression that is!

Rockingcloggs · 12/04/2023 06:15

@hotdiggetydog I write under the name of Rockingcloggs - I am not a pair of cloggs. It's simply a name to write under. I am assuming you are not physically a character from Disney?

GailForce10 · 12/04/2023 06:22

You are giving an obvious TRA sock account, who is trying to troll you, too much credence.

borntobequiet · 12/04/2023 06:25

She literally doesn’t.

If a man is along it’s not a girl’s night out is it? Going out as a mixed sex group is fine

as I said though, I’ve never met a man who enjoys role playing as a woman whose company I have actively enjoyed. I don’t deal well with needy people

I don't deal well with users. I don't like being used.

So I wouldn't like being used for validation or as a prop by a man doing woman role play.

forgotmyusername1 · 12/04/2023 06:44

Jkr writes under a different name because she doesn't want that work directly compared to her Harry Potter books as they are different genres. A lot of adults who are into crime novels wouldn't probably be put off by seeing jkr as the author so she writes under a different name to make a distinction between the genres. A lot of authors do this - I like Sophie Kinsella books which are easy read fiction. Her harder hitting stuff is published under the name madeline Wickham. Imagine if you picked up a Stephen King novel and it was akin to a Jackie collins book rather than a horror- certain writers become heavily involved with certain genres and pen names is a way of making clear this style is different.

She doesn't use the gents when going out

forgotmyusername1 · 12/04/2023 06:45

Would be put off

SquidwardBound · 12/04/2023 06:45

It’s always fun when TRAs use the word literally.

Using a pen name to present and market a book as if it were written by a man is not the same as an individual presenting themselves as a man.

does this apply to musicians taking stage names too? drake is literally presenting himself as a duck. Or pink as a colour. Or pitbull as a dog.

Or is dwayne Johnson somehow identifying as geological gender by presenting himself as the rock?

forgotmyusername1 · 12/04/2023 06:51

Don't bring the furries into it. That is a whole other level of insanity (apparently a high school near here has a teenage girl cat problem)

Dassams · 12/04/2023 06:56

But his whole body ans all his chromosomes are still male. Of course he is still a male!

JKR has already spoken about how she chose the name

What hotdiggety dog is on about, and why I agree with other posters who have called them a TRA sock puppet.

JK Rowling tells story of alter ego Robert Galbraith

Harry Potter author explains how she gave her crime-writing undercover alter ego Robert Galbraith his name

Whilst your derailment has been tedious interesting, what is your answer to the OP? I don’t believe you’ve properly shared that and you seem to have some form of opinion.

EdithStourton · 12/04/2023 09:16

Haven't RTFT but the answer is no.

A few years I probably would have done, certainly post-op, but after the shit the TRAs have piled on us since, and the amount of feminist time, money and energy these wankers have burned up in obliging us to battle for the retention of some basic rights, no.

Even the truly dysphoric ones. Sorry, chaps, but no.

Thin end of the wedge. We let you in and the maniacs followed. Men in women's prisons and sports. No.

Not even no, thank you. Just, NO.

hotdiggetydog · 12/04/2023 09:21

Quite hard to have a constructive argument with people who dispute irrefutable facts.

Fairislefandango · 12/04/2023 09:29

Oh don't be so ridiculous. Writing a book under a pseudonym in order to conceal something about your identity is not the same as 'literally claiming to be a man'. You're posting under a pseudonym. Does that mean you are literally claiming to be a 'hotdiggetydog'? Or that you think that, for example, @RufustheSpeculatingreindeer is claiming to be literally a reindeer?

forgotmyusername1 · 12/04/2023 09:30

you are of course correct - it is hard to have a constructive argument with people who dispute irrefutable facts

women have xx chromosones and men have xy chromosones. A tit job, long hair and a liking for dresses do not change your chromosones.

They are the irrefutable facts
