For once we can do a thread about a new book where all the writers are actually on this very board!

Some of you know what I have been up to recently, when I can tear myself away from posting twaddle, gifs and sweary words in bigly letters on here, but for the rest of you…

Over Christmas and New Year after the passing of the GRR (Scotland) Bill a thread was started by TerfranosaurusVagina on the Mumsnet FWR board with a poem about Nicola Sturgeon. Eventually on that thread (and a couple of other threads) over 80 poems were written.

Ramblingnamechanger suggested we do something with them to raise funds to help the women of Scotland and whilst Dodecaheidyin was tempted to write to Poetry Please on Radio 4, and ask them to do an extended special for Hogmanay about our poems, in the end it was decided to make the thread into a book.

After much procrastination by me “Under the Duvet of Darkness: Poems written by angry women for angry women because WOMEN WON’T WHEESHT” went live on Amazon on 31st March

https://amzn.eu/d/98aEnJy

If searching on the site you need to:

Select BOOKS as the department and UNDER THE DUVET OF DARKNESS in the search box.

Currently it doesn’t show up in the main all departments search (I don’t know why or if it will, it takes a while for everything to work properly according to Amazon).

Theres also a QR code below which should take you right there (hopefully the attached works)

MONEY FROM SALES:

In honour of Magdalen Berns, who co-founded the Scottish campaign group For Women Scotland, 100% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to For Women Scotland.*

*Please note that whilst the profit will be donated to For Women Scotland they are not involved, nor are they responsible in any way for the themes, contents or publication of this book.

I'd just emailed the file for the bonus kindle info. Sat down to catch up on the day and now have to rewrite the bit about waiting for Humza to make his mind up about the GRR Bill!! Ugh!

Anyway on with good news.

My book exchange copies have arrived. Not sure why the photo came out upside down though.

Excellent! And great news for FWS.

With the batshittery that is the Scottish Government deciding to appeal the Section 35 order they're probably going to need every penny to campaign up there.

Getting close to £650 raised for For Women Scotland. It's creeping up! And it's got 26 reviews now on Amazon!

Thanks Boiled. Is there any end to your talents?!!!

Boiledbeetle · 13/04/2023 07:42

@crunchermuncher I commend you on your bok purchasing choices.

@DialSquare to be honest photo turning through 180 degrees has been the absolute pinnacle of my career. Once you've touched perfection it's a hard fall back to the reality of being a lesser mortal.

Ffs I've been avoiding this thread cos it was long and I couldn't be arsed reading so much and never had the time and well the excuses go on.

So tomorrow is my payday, I'll order it then. And read it and then give it to another woman. And hope it goes on.

Boiledbeetle · 13/04/2023 11:39

@Ourladycheesusedatum well at least by waiting you get to check out the Amazon reviews to make sure you aren't being sold a lemon.

late to the party but to keep up the fun / prepare the next edition I offer you lovely people this with tea and toast...

IF you wake at midnight, and a man is in your room,
Don't sit up, or look, or speak, or feel you can assume.
Them that ask no questions isn't told a lie.
Watch the wall my darling while the Ladymen go by.

For men who have hurt women,
Have put them in their grave -
Can still say that they’re special, they're stunning and they’re brave.
Entitled to a girlfriend, women should comply
Men can be lesbians if they want, it's unkind to deny !

Walking through the street by day, dancing in the night
No matter what they do or say, nor if they look a sight
Don't you shout to come and see, nor tease 'em for your play.
They are more dangerous than they look - and no they’re not all gay !

If you see a willy, that does not want to hide;
A wee bit of a stiffy from all the joy inside;
If your mother cries, now that yer Father is a miss;
Think only of his feelings, criticism is remiss!

Even if they want to come and watch you as you change
If they loiter, stare too long or otherwise seem strange.
You've no call for complaining, saying no, feeling ignored,
The police will see the problem here, it’s only transphobes not on board.

And if you meet them out in force, you’d better keep your head
You be careful what you say, and mindful what is said.
Talk less than they do, nod and smile, you must be your most charming,
For they’ve made violence a virtue with no care for who they’re harming .

If you do all you've been told, ‘likely there’s a chance
You’ll be ok, at least for now, as men’s rights still advance.
No prizes though for women, no more sports or teams.
Every record, every place will be held by men with means.

But worse by far a convict can, according to his feelings
choose to have a woman now with whom to spend his evenings.
And well why not if he should feel that that would be more fair,
feelings and dignity are important for men, women are there to care.

No matter how they shout it out,
how loudly they proclaim -
You must pretend that you don’t know, swearing to the same.
For sure ‘tis a lady; no question as to why,
Watch the wall my darling while the nice lady goes by!

1906 poem A smuggler's song is out of copyright should it ever be relevant or desired boiled beetle is welcome to it.

Britinme · 13/04/2023 17:49

@howdoesatoastermaketoast - that's superb!

Boiledbeetle · 13/04/2023 21:29

@howdoesatoastermaketoast on wow! That's brilliant.

I love the ones that are "inspired" by other poems. I can't do them as when I look at the original I can't get new words to formulate!

Will admit it's slightly depressing that the watch the wall line is still effectively in operation over 100 years after Kipling wrote the original!

Same shit different century!

Hmm.. Volume two...

I'd like to think that we won't remain this angry for long enough to compile a volume 2. But I suspect we will for a good while yet!

OP posts:
TheBiologyStupid · 13/04/2023 22:45

Too late for Vol 2? Ah well, there's always Vol 3...

Shall I compare thee to a TRA?
Thou art more lovely and more gentle, too:
Rough hands do shake the sharpened tools of hate,
And mental health is all destroyed by woo:
Sometime too obvious the penis of "her" shows,
And often is that "female" organ hymned;
And every option of fair sport declines,
Not chance, but male biology, untrimmed:
But thy eventual victory shall prevail,
You'll keep possession of those rights thou ow’st;
Nor shall men brag they wander’st in thy jail
When sanity at last begins to grow’st:
So long as women breathe and eyes can see,
So long lives sex, and thus reality.

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 13/04/2023 22:53
