A Mumsnet thread about a book about a Mumsnet thread “Under the Duvet of Darkness” written by the women of Mumsnet

For once we can do a thread about a new book where all the writers are actually on this very board!

Some of you know what I have been up to recently, when I can tear myself away from posting twaddle, gifs and sweary words in bigly letters on here, but for the rest of you…

Over Christmas and New Year after the passing of the GRR (Scotland) Bill a thread was started by TerfranosaurusVagina on the Mumsnet FWR board with a poem about Nicola Sturgeon. Eventually on that thread (and a couple of other threads) over 80 poems were written.

Ramblingnamechanger suggested we do something with them to raise funds to help the women of Scotland and whilst Dodecaheidyin was tempted to write to Poetry Please on Radio 4, and ask them to do an extended special for Hogmanay about our poems, in the end it was decided to make the thread into a book.

After much procrastination by me “Under the Duvet of Darkness: Poems written by angry women for angry women because WOMEN WON’T WHEESHT” went live on Amazon on 31st March

https://amzn.eu/d/98aEnJy

If searching on the site you need to:

Select BOOKS as the department and UNDER THE DUVET OF DARKNESS in the search box.

Currently it doesn’t show up in the main all departments search (I don’t know why or if it will, it takes a while for everything to work properly according to Amazon).

Theres also a QR code below which should take you right there (hopefully the attached works)

MONEY FROM SALES:

In honour of Magdalen Berns, who co-founded the Scottish campaign group For Women Scotland, 100% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to For Women Scotland.*

*Please note that whilst the profit will be donated to For Women Scotland they are not involved, nor are they responsible in any way for the themes, contents or publication of this book.

I have enjoyed reading this! Now just need to figure out how to leave a review without my real full name.

Thank you for buying it. And fur wanting to review it.

I've attached a screenshot to help you change your name.

if you search for "public profile" in the search box it should bring up Amazon profiles. Then click on the bit that says "Your profile -help".

In there you can change your name and what's seen by the public, delete or hide reviews etc.

Too late for Vol 2? Ah well, there's always Vol 3...

Shall I compare thee to a TRA?
Thou art more lovely and more gentle, too:
Rough hands do shake the sharpened tools of hate,
And mental health is all destroyed by woo:
Sometime too obvious the penis of "her" shows,
And often is that "female" organ hymned;
And every option of fair sport declines,
Not chance, but male biology, untrimmed:
But thy eventual victory shall prevail,
You'll keep possession of those rights thou ow’st;
Nor shall men brag they wander’st in thy jail
When sanity at last begins to grow’st:
So long as women breathe and eyes can see,
So long lives sex, and thus reality.

I think i prefer this to the original!!

Just dropping in for two seconds.

So far today a grand total of 1 order has been processed. 😶it's nail biting. Will it stay at 1 or will some poor soul put me out of my misery and buy copies?

That’s a huge amount. Not the one, the total. Are they mostly from this thread do you know? Or are you now a famous twitterer?

Boiledbeetle · 14/04/2023 14:00

@Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis Obviously there are people here buying it, but I suspect a lot are coming from the push it gets from For Women Scotland retweeting some of my tweets. I think I've got 150 followers. Although as I started this with no followers that's better than nothing.

So I'll tweet when we are nearing a significant number or cash amount they retweet it and that pulls in sales for a few days.then we start the process again with a nearly at x tweet again.

I'm sure i could try harder to push it, but honestly I don't have it in me! Twitter is still like trying to speak an alien language to me!

I don’t get on with Twitter either. You’ve done brilliantly not only making the book but then all the Twitter work to get the sales. I hope you’re proud of what you’ve achieved

Boiledbeetle · 14/04/2023 23:38

@Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis will admit all I've achieved today is watching an entire series of Star Trek: Picard! A day well spent!

Currently on 272 orders processed and £680!

Fantadtic work. I've been trying to buy this for a few days - keep getting a Currently unavailable message. Hoping its not a TRA in Amazon putting a block on it.

This should work if you are in the UK.

If your elsewhere I do have different links.

But I know some people abroad have had issues and have to search books and then English books.

I am loving this book, will certainly be leaving an excellent review!
It is just brilliant to be able to take the sanity and camaraderie of this board out into the real world, with a real tangible book that I can see and touch. Every time I look at it I will be proud to realise I'm not alone, that there is a terven hoarde out there who haven't lost all sight of reason and logic.

Boiledbeetle · 15/04/2023 16:24

@crunchermuncher wonderful news!

I suddenly have an image of the book on your bookshelf and when everyone's gone out lots of little tiny mini women emerge to sit on the shelf nattering about stuff!

Bit like the mumsnet version of Toy Story!

Harrumph, no I'm bathing a dog, putting two more rows of bricks on my new gatepost, transplanting seedlings, visiting the old dear who's nearly a hundred years old, making sure she has some cheese cut into bite sized pieces, a quick visit round the corner where the old mans wall fell down in some high winds, seeing if hes managed to sort his insurance out yet to fix the wall, going over the road to relieve a different old Man to go shopping while I sit with his dementia ridden wife, also washing machine and dryer on so need to keep refilling periodically. Theres some more stuff that I've completely forgotten too.
However its almost 5pm ^^ some if these might have to be done tomorrow instead.
THEN I'll do the sodding crossword, then ill read the lovely book.
And drink copious amounts of wine.
Love my life I does

Had to Google, I dont get on with Terry pratchett books. I've tried. So not certain that's a compliment?

I've got to the drink copious amounts of wine bit of my list. Am happy. Had a productive day.
I have two rows and a brick of the third row on my gatepost. Because I cannot count, honest.

The dog isnt bathed but all other things are done. Wall is being rebuilt now. The almost centenarian has cheese in small pieces, and wine but dont tell her daughter. The seedlings are in the planters but the planters aren't in place yet just ranged around my back garden. The dementia wife is still home and in one Piece even though she doesnt know me, her husband has a haircut and some food.
Washer and dryer still going. Dog needs a bath, but I need wine more.

Bottoms up darlings.

Boiledbeetle · 15/04/2023 20:51

Goes to ask how the book reading is going. But hears little snores and notices the empty bottle of wine and the still dirty dog.

She's had a busy day. Bless!

@Ourladycheesusedatum it was certainly intended as a compliment but if you're not a Pratchett fan I can see how it might seem weird

/sorry I'm weird sometimes it shows

quote from internet rando puts it better than I did

"Pratchett often showed that wisdom and cleverness can beat raw power. A lot of his protagonists don't necessarily have massive power... A lot of the witches, while powerful in their own way, do not use that power... But these characters win through either being smart, being kind, or pure dumb luck. That feels more relatable. I'll never be the most powerful, most beautiful, or most strong. But I can become wise, I can be clever, and I can be kind. We can't be superman but we can be wise like Esme, we can be militantly decent like Vimes. We can be clever and compassionate like Tiffany"

What I meant was you were a caring person in a sensible actually doing stuff way

That damn dog, currently scratching at the muddy bits, who am I kidding, the entire bottom half is muddy. Will need bathing tomorrow, I just cannot leave her in this state.

The wine is sunk, sadly no more. Sigh.

Have not read the book, However tomorrow is a new day, and I only have to strip the bed, bath the sodding dog, make a lasagne, make 4 cakes, some more bricks on my gatepost and more washing/drying. Easy day. Ha.

Awww, I like this. Yes I think I'm more practical. I see no point endlessly discussing options. Just think of a way that suits all involved then do it.

Possibly my autism?

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 15/04/2023 22:08

@Ourladycheesusedatum "Possibly my autism?"

fairness honesty & consistent rules matter?
definitions matter, consistent and clear categorisation systems matter?

I suspect regardless of diagnosis autistic women are over represented on this board
