For once we can do a thread about a new book where all the writers are actually on this very board!

Some of you know what I have been up to recently, when I can tear myself away from posting twaddle, gifs and sweary words in bigly letters on here, but for the rest of you…

Over Christmas and New Year after the passing of the GRR (Scotland) Bill a thread was started by TerfranosaurusVagina on the Mumsnet FWR board with a poem about Nicola Sturgeon. Eventually on that thread (and a couple of other threads) over 80 poems were written.

Ramblingnamechanger suggested we do something with them to raise funds to help the women of Scotland and whilst Dodecaheidyin was tempted to write to Poetry Please on Radio 4, and ask them to do an extended special for Hogmanay about our poems, in the end it was decided to make the thread into a book.

After much procrastination by me “Under the Duvet of Darkness: Poems written by angry women for angry women because WOMEN WON’T WHEESHT” went live on Amazon on 31st March

https://amzn.eu/d/98aEnJy

If searching on the site you need to:

Select BOOKS as the department and UNDER THE DUVET OF DARKNESS in the search box.

Currently it doesn’t show up in the main all departments search (I don’t know why or if it will, it takes a while for everything to work properly according to Amazon).

Theres also a QR code below which should take you right there (hopefully the attached works)

MONEY FROM SALES:

In honour of Magdalen Berns, who co-founded the Scottish campaign group For Women Scotland, 100% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to For Women Scotland.*

*Please note that whilst the profit will be donated to For Women Scotland they are not involved, nor are they responsible in any way for the themes, contents or publication of this book.

Curious that 5 of the books now above UTDoD in the Poetry chart aren't actually books of poetry.

But as whatever the charts say it's doing a brilliant job of raising funds for For Women Scotland, it's a moot point. Or "mootless" as I saw on MN the other day Grin

RealFeminist · 04/04/2023 11:10

PINCH OF FUCKING NOM MY ARSE IS THAT POETRY

ScrambledSmegs · 04/04/2023 11:10

Mine's out for delivery!

Villagetoraiseachild · 04/04/2023 11:10

Flippin heck. Legal sagas are life sucking vampires....
Good thing that chapter is dispatched.

There are times when a mucky house is a badge of honour.....

Boiledbeetle · 04/04/2023 11:11

I found it funny that when it was at No 2 the No 1 spot was held by a crime novel identifying as poetry! Yet again women losing out to a man who is in the wrong place!

That may be so, but the house is a tip. I've run out of clean mugs, I've finally had to admit defeat and put a load of washing in having run out of clean everything, the living room looks like burglars have thrown a few reams of paper around! It's chaos!

But it's been worth it!

I've had a really shit few years. I was involved in a legal case that took 2 years to get to court and then another 10 years stuck in a legal battle with a government department, who despite someone being in jail decided that it was basically still my fault!

I spent last year just coming to terms with the fact that 12 years of legal battles was over.

This year was the start of a new chapter.

Turns out that new chapter came with another 15 all bound in a rather nice cover!

Oh great Boiled Beetle,
You should be proud of yourself.

Someone needs to explain to Amazon what Poetry is.
They've obvs led an uncultured life in that ginormous warehouse.

Ramblingnamechanger · 04/04/2023 11:53

Oh if only my books ( about another topic altogether) had an audience this keen….Green eyed…

Boiledbeetle · 04/04/2023 12:11

I have virgin's of a TRA working at Amazon on realising one of the wrong kind of books has slipped through updating every book they can find as poetry!

Even the poetry on the poetry list is mainly anthologies of wimpy stuff on a wellness theme. We've really lost our way publishing and buying poetry in this country - our culture is going down the pan. I've scanned the first 100 and I can't see any - in amongst the books merely identifing as a poety there are a few classics - Homer and Dante etc - but little new stuff.

I am making a mental note to buy a proper slim volume from an actual slim poet (must be slim, they can make little money out of it) this month. This is a good reminder.

And kudos to @Boiledbeetle for reigniting my interest as well as being a fine poet/editor/fund raiser/builder to boot!

ArabellaScott · 04/04/2023 13:01

Poetry's had a vanishingly tiny audience for quite some time! Perhaps some spoken word might reach larger audiences - I'm thinking of Kate Tempest's work (more rap than poetry, really) - but for the most part, there are generally more people writing poetry than reading/buying it.

My copy arrived today 😊😊 It has prominent pride of place on me living room table - I shall dip in and out of it as the mood takes me.

Boiledbeetle · 04/04/2023 13:32

I'm loving seeing the photos of it out in the wild.

I feel so proud!

Is this what it's like when your children grow up and go off into the world?

I did find writing poems over that rather bleak period of time that was formally known as Christmas until Nicola cancelled women very cathartic! It also truly stopped me from going and throwing plates at the back wall!

It's a very good way to say what you think when you find you are being silenced elsewhere!

@DerekFaker I hope it pleases you!

Mad The Internet GIF by MOODMAN

The car has just walked past me meowing the tune to "Lola, she was a show girl"

Whilst the other one is growling "okjan" whilst scratching the arm of the sofa.

I think we've found the culprits!

God! I'm late feeding them one too many times and that's how they punish me!

I'm changing the Wi-Fi code next time they are out.

IT'S HERE!!! WAY AHEAD OF SCHEDULE!!

I am going to go for a posh coffee tomorrow and I will take it with me to read, conspicuously, in my small village in Berkshire. Review will be written after I have read it (as apparently is traditional...).

duc748 · 04/04/2023 14:13

Bonus, my missing one is still driving round in an Amazon van. Somewhere!

You could also suddenly become afflicted with a terrible problem of shouting the words out loud when you read!

And I suppose it's OK, if you insist! To read the book first! At least then it's an honest review (please don't be two stars, please don't be two stars).

Ooh...twins. Ahh bless.

That's got me wondering. When it says orders processed are they counting individual books as orders or is an order of 2 going down as 1 copy in the orders processed dashboard?

We shall find out at the end of the month!

Visions not virgins! DID !0

Perhaps we should call them TRIs - Trans Ranty Incels. It would certainly explain a lot.

"No one will shag me! Boo boo! Not even lesbians - whyyyyyyyyyy?!!!!"

Well, son, I could explain it to you, but you'd think it was violence...
