Telegraph - Keir Starmer: Pro-trans laws are needed across UK

At first glance, just (just!!) a rehash of his video from last year. Which said what it said. But there's this:

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/12/23/keir-starmer-pro-trans-laws-needed-across-uk/

"Asked by The Telegraph about the leader’s comments to Pink News, Labour confirmed that he stood by plans to reform the GRA.

A party spokesman said: “All political parties agree that the process needs modernising. A future Labour government will consult on what that looks like, while upholding the Equality Act and maintaining single-sex spaces.
“Labour has a strong and proud record of standing up for women’s rights. Our commitment to them is unrelenting.”
Trans rights have become a key electoral battleground in the USS_ and are expected to be similarly important in the UK at the next general election."

Do all political parties agree the GRA needs updating? The Tories just made it easier to get a GRC, and they've not said they plan to do more.

Once again the "maintaining single sex spaces" rhetoric. But next to the Haldane judgement? Come on.

Just read this. Oh fuck! Talk about doubling down. 2022 will be remembered as the year that women vanished from the world.

Birdsweepsin · 23/12/2022 21:39

Hmm. The Scottish National Party is riven with mistrust, anger and resignations over this issue.

That's exactly what we need in the Labour Party too!

aweegc · 23/12/2022 21:49

But Scottish Labour didn't seem too excited about updating it in Scotland. Is there a break between the the two?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 23/12/2022 21:50

Keir knows exactly what a woman is so he’s either a coward - too afraid of the TRA in his own party to stand up for women or a liar. Neither is a good look

FOJN · 23/12/2022 21:53

They don't want to be elected do they?

Who knows. But the article says this:

"Sir Keir has remained silent on <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.ph/o/CiUE4/www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/12/22/scotland-passes-gender-reform-bill-snp-nicola-sturgeon/" rel="nofollow" target="blank">the controversy in Scotlandd and has so far refused to comment on whether he would back plans to veto the Bill in Westminster."

And this:

"Labour has not given any details of how it would protect single-sex spaces at the same time as allowing people to choose their legal gender."

Silence speaks volumes IMO. Rishi's said something. Why wouldn't the leader of the opposition?

LIARS the Labour (Jackie Ballie) amendments (& other ones) to prevent sex offenders etc using self ID were defeated & Labour STILL whipped the vote for the bill.

Exactly this, why on earth did anyone block an amendment to prevent sex offenders from using self ID?

That's nothing to do with trans people, it everything to do with sex offenders using whatever lie they can for their nefarious means.

Because it was an amendment tabled entirely in bad faith, designed for no other purpose than to drag the bill outwith the competence of the Scottish Parliament.

Fortunately most MSP's saw straight through it.

This narrative that has sprung up falls flat on it's arse when confronted with the fact that Gillian Martin's later amendment passed.

This stood out for me too. Lies, lies, lies.

Labour abandoned women in Scotland.

We always knew that he was a coward. On pretty much every issue since he became leader he has sat upon the fence. Won't take a position just in case it might be the wrong one.

Who the hell do I vote for now? Conservatives are doing their level best to tear the country apart, but Lab/Lib/Plaid are all for castrating autistic children.

I'll have to go by what individual candidates say. The incumbent is Conservative and probably privately GC but in public has very clearly decided that the topic is too hot to handle so will change the subject. So unless one of the other parties fields a candidate who admits to believing in reality, I'll be reduced to spoiling my ballot. I suppose that all I can hope for is a hung parliament and no one willing to form a coalition.

Mochudubh · 23/12/2022 22:15

I think/hope that the likes of Kier and the SNP are clinging on to the bandwagon, not realising the wheels are falling off, and in a year or so their stance will come back to bite them in the arse.

Unfortunately it's going to take more women and girls to suffer before this madness is widely seen for what it is.

ResisterRex · 23/12/2022 22:19

It's the lead story in tomorrow's paper:

twitter.com/tmorrowspapers/status/1606408518533357572?s=46&t=5zkyCv9UMyXDpqN_fJVdww

I've no time for them any more. No more "maybe they're doing x" and crossing my fingers, or reading into the silence. Forget it. I'm done.

If they won't stand up for women and they won't say sterilising gay children is wrong then there ARE no excuses.

I am just gobsmacked that ‘those in power’ are wilfully ignoring the opinion of the vast majority of citizens not just one party but ALL of them. We are not represented! How the hell is this happening?

wesayno · 23/12/2022 22:40

Pro-trans = Anti-women

Needmoresleep · 23/12/2022 22:49

Wow, this is grim.

Sausagenbacon · 23/12/2022 22:53

He annoys me so much, but IMO he'll get in next time with a wopping majority and this will be nodded through.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 23/12/2022 22:56

He's absolutely lost his mind. Does he not have anything more useful or important to worry about?

Sausagenbacon · 23/12/2022 22:59

...and that interview with the press was choreographed within an inch of its life. Utterly unauthentic, if they were real journalists, I'm a dutchman

They've not given any details of this for a good number of years now. I'm assuming that they think we are stupid.

You may be onto something.

Assuming the electorate are stupid and will vote against their interests has worked well for the Tory party for a very long time.

TheABC · 23/12/2022 23:05

It's weird as he has been very articulate about the poor rape convictions and processes in the UK, so he knows about predatory men and male violence. He was a prosecutor and he can join the dots on safeguarding.

So why double down?

Needmoresleep · 23/12/2022 23:17

The Mail version

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11570689/Labour-war-Scotlands-new-law-changing-gender.html

Interesting that some believe the split is 50:50. Labour MPs barely want to win the next election. To do this they need to win back the ‘red wall’. To do this the party probably needs to start listening to the electorate.

Needmoresleep · 23/12/2022 23:18

Badly, not barely.
