Update the Equality Act to make clear the characteristic “sex” is biological sex

I think they were probably wise not to respond ahead of the Scottish shitshow, and I'd rather have a considered response than a quick one.

I’m sure that Ministers are really worried at having to go on the record with a government response on this, especially as Scotland has gone in the direction it has gone in, which is why this petition is so important and prescient in forcing this issue.

The Tories seem to have made some political advantage in giving the impression that the party and government are supportive of women’s rights, because some MPs have been saying in front of supportive audiences that they know what women are or whatever phrase was used.

That’s well and good, we do all know what women and men are really, but the Tories have been in power for 12 years, they have seen this problem multiply and have done nothing, they have kicked GRA reform into the long grass to avoid tackling it and now, on this Equality Act point they are dragging their feet on actually saying anything substantive. Let alone actively committing to progressive change in favour of women’s rights.

If Kemi Badenoch, Rishi Sunak and the wider Tory party actually care about women then this is their big chance. They don’t seem very keen to take it though.

Agree the response will need careful consideration.

And the petition is not enough, we need to keep asking questions of anyone with influence whether that’s politicians or leaders in schools and universities, workplaces, healthcare settings, leisure settings,… anywhere!

We need clarity in law so that people know their rights, can understand their rights and can challenge where their rights are being denied.

We know that there are many in every single political party who are willing to recite the mantras and prioritise the feelings of one group of people over the safety, privacy and dignity of other groups. It’s not bigotry to expect women to be treated as human beings who are also worthy of dignity and respect.
