This morning on another thread, a poster wrote that she had had been trying to complain to her child’s primary school that a No Outsiders wall poster ( apparently but not explicitly related to the 9 protected characteristics under the Equalities Act) shows ‘gender’ in place of sex - meaning sex is the only characteristic left out as all the other 8 are included.

She was told however by the person in charge that a number of recent law cases since 2010 have stated that sex means gender.

This quote is from a federation of schools policy booklet.

It shows the school has misunderstood the Equality Act in not allowing a sex based group of children a separate sex based space in which to change - on the basis of letting the rights of a transgender child take priority.

at her body?^

^For example, in this scenario it would not be appropriate to remove the trans person from the changing rooms if a concern is raised by a parent or carer. In this situation, it would be far more appropriate to look at offering an alternative changing arrangement for the child who feels uncomfortable around the trans* person. A Human Rights response would be to state that although the individual in question may have the body of a boy, they are in every other respect a
girl and as such have the right under the Equality Act to change with the girls and to be treated fairly as such.^*

This is wrong. On this scenario the trans child is the one who could be offered an alternative changing arrangement.

This is the reason to update the Equality Act to make clear that sex means biological sex.

It's because it reached 10k signatures and there was no government response when that happened. Looks routine?

I wonder if there was a hope that the petition would reach 100,000 quickly enough to move straight to a discussion in parliament.

On the other hand there is a need to be quite careful in the government response and it may still be in the process of being worked out especially given recent events in Scotland.
