Standing for women - Portland rally cancelled over violent threats

ArabellaScott · 26/10/2022 13:59

Not quite sure what's happened - seems there were credible threats to women's lives over these protests.

twitter.com/StandingforXX

Now it seems a few women went ahead and met up and were attacked. (Nobody seriously hurt as far as I can tell)

Hoping everyone is safe and well.

Bernard there's something about these meetings making men the main players that feels uncomfortable to me.

I know that it's about letting women speak, but what is dominating discussion is the attacks and assaults by men, the men with guns and some of the other male people who have been around these events. At least in the spaces I'm in, as a non-LWS follower.

I understand that women are worried about the indoctrination and medicalisation of kids. Of course they are. So am I.

My unease is that that is happening in a context where women are being regularly assaulted or protected by men with guns. That's all. As someone who has been involved with the women's movement for decades, I've never seen that before and it unsettles me.

Of course I've seen women assaulted. I was at Speaker's Corner when Maria was. But it was women who sorted that out, not men.

Feel free to ignore me, but I don't think any action should be above thought and reflection.

Copied from my text from another thread in regards to the vitriol PP has received from Bindel and Jones

/

KJK has been condemned by hiring apparently right wing security for one of her open mic protests.
KJK has been condemned because a Proud Boy asked to take a selfie with her at an open mic protest.

Now, we have lots of leftie socialist feminists pontificating on the dangers of women affiliating themselves with the 'FAR RIGHT'.

Then why aren't they condemning Julie Bindel for earning her keep from the right wing press?
It's not just a selfie or paying someone to keep them safe. Bindel is being PAID by the right wing!

I looked up Bindel's journalism

Left Wing
The Guardian - 429 articles

Right Wing
Daily Mail - 35
Spectator - approx 95 (Editors fast tracked to Tory Cabinets from here)
Telegraph - 26
The Critic - 50 (home of Toby Young)

Basic maths shows that the Head Girl of Socialist Feminism has had 47% of her keep paid for by the Right Wing. (And I've not checked the Mirror or the Sun but I'm sure she's there).

We know that the Daily Mail have a long affiliation with facists like the Proud Boys. So why does Bindel get out of this with a jail-free card? She's written 201 articles for right-wing press?

TheClogLady · 04/11/2022 21:17

Julie Bindel did a speaking tour with the one-time darling of the alt right, Milo Yiannopoulos back in 2016:

www.michigandaily.com/news/controversial-figures-debate-feminism-and-freedom-speech/

Personally, I believe debate is healthy and no platforming and assuming guilt by association are both bad things that we shouldn’t engage in.

Bindel, however, is critical if Posie for hiring security who may or may not have extreme right wing contacts whilst conveniently forgetting she herself knowingly and repeatedly worked with Milo during Milo’s heyday period.

It’s a bit disappointing.

TheClogLady · 04/11/2022 21:18

Also, weekly reminder that the superwoke Vice Magazine (new home of former BBC LGBT correspondent, Ben Hunte) was founded by the exact same dude who later went on to found The Proud Boys.

I agree with this, I find it hard to believe any feminist could stomach being associated with the Mail. But still there is a considerable distance between The Daily Mail and the likes of the Proud Boys or the Patriot movement in the US which are groups whose ideologies and activities are steeped in violence. I don't think many of even the most vociferous Daily Mail readers would have supported the storming of The Capitol or the acts of terrorism now being committed by the far right in some US states.

Exactly, debate is important and I'm glad Bindel et al get their message out, even if it is by the right-wing press.

What is horrific and hypocritical though is that she and the socialist or academic Head Girls vilify KJK for what I see as micro-aggressions.

Using their platforms to do so.

Meanwhile KJK holds her head high saying she won't name and shame them.

And then Bindel published another article in the Spectator.

I'm sure she's enjoying her £1000s from that article, some nice bubbles paid for by some right-wing men, whilst KJK is being abused by leftie men

livvyposts · 04/11/2022 22:14

It's not really micro-aggressions though. The kind of people Kellie Jay is now attracting, both in the US and UK are not UKIP pub bores with some dodgy views on immigration. They are members of street based far right groups or allied to them. The kind of groups that carry out violent attacks on well known left wingers or trade unionists as well as minority owned businesses or places of worship. The kind of people that it's not very safe for the members of groups like Woman's Place or for women of colour to be around - because even if they are on their best behaviour at the time it doesn't mean they won't pass on information or intelligence they pick up to more nefarious types.

It's instructive that the women objecting to this are those with a long history of organising protests and will have seen fascist violence close up. Women who know, sometimes first hand, what these men can be like, and what a liability they are to any movement that seeks to remain credible and non violent. I don't think some people understand exactly how much Kellie Jay is playing with fire, I don't even think she understands it herself, but it has the potential to be the beginning of the end for a gender critical movement that has the support of any on the left, the right wing press or MPs. No-one wants to be associated with these people, not even the worst kind of Tories, they are utterly politically toxic.

Would it be possible for you to clarify/qualify who you are talking about here please @livvyposts

I'm a woman of colour thanks very much and I don't like being told who I should and should not be feeling safe around.

Bindel writing for the Daily Mail is cosying up to facists. She's doing this almost on a daily basis. So says your own socialist media, too.

socialistworker.co.uk/socialist-review-archive/fascism-and-daily-mail/

So if you wanted to ask me, an immigrant and a woman of colour who I feel safer around? It's KJK.

I could barely read your essay because it went straight over my head. Do you know, I used to think it was because I wasn't very clever? But now I realise that there are 10000s of us feeling the way we do about those knocking Posie.

Honestly you're full of it

EndlessTea · 04/11/2022 22:42

Furthermore, I think KJK is a dab hand at organising protests by now and she has seen plenty of aggressive men up close too.

She is clearly a very smart woman and capable of learning and tweaking as she goes.

People around Women's Place and those in the Trade Union movement.

I was thinking that Livvy might suggest women like Alison Bailey etc but then remembered that the socialist feminists dumped her and JKR in to the bin

I was hoping I might hear about women at Greenham Common or something.

FeatherPend · 04/11/2022 22:57

No @EndlessTea I suspect Livvy is just referring to another one of the KJK abusers.
I think they think we're too stupid to see through their gaslighting? I've been around for far too long on MumsNet in the Relationship board though to spot it immediately.

livvyposts · 04/11/2022 22:58

If you think kind of kind protesters who have turned up to protest SFW events are remotely in the same league as those who attend EDL demos or similar you are startlingly naive. You're talking about the difference between a bunch of angry students and grown blokes who've spent their life fighting at the football and fascist demos and who often have a string of convictions for serious violence to show for it.

Or in the case of the US a bunch of hyped up school kids compared to heavily armed men tied to a group described as an extremist militia by the FBI. I know who I'd be more frightened of, whichever side of the political fence I was on because in the UK especially these blokes aren't very diciplined, they are coked up and pissed half the time. It only takes one of them to lose his rag and put a female counter protester in hospital and the optics will start to change very quickly.

oh man

has KJK made someone's cow barren AGAIN?

that fucking woman

TheClogLady · 04/11/2022 23:01

Chortling to myself at the description of Antifa, ‘jumped up school kids’ 😆

Venice Allan demonstrated that she’s “got more balls than Millwall” and she’s mates with KJK.

Another point…. if lefty and anarchist protesters are these harmless whipper-snappers, but the ‘far right’ protesters are the REAL dangerous thugs - then it obviously won’t be a problem for KJK, will it? Because, according to these seasoned trade unionists who know what’s what, she’s been cosying up to them.

Yet now you are trying to say that those close and cosy far-right-wingers are suddenly going to turn around to be her counter-protesters. It doesn’t make sense. Make up your bloomin mind.

Millwall backed out because the supporters didn't want to be involved in a controversial issue on either side at a time when they are trying to rebuild their reputation as a club. It was nothing to do with them being scared or put under pressure.

@livvyposts if I’m being honest, there’s something rather slippery and not right about the way you are posting.
