Rishi Sunak's letter says 'resigning from the Government'.
Does that mean leaving the Tory party?

No - resigning from the Cabinet ie being in a ministerial position.

He's still a Tory MP - just a backbencher now.

Artichokeleaves · 05/07/2022 18:33

Becoming more and more convinced Javid is a sensible man.

Johnson needs to go. Hopefully this will topple him.

MoltenLasagne · 05/07/2022 18:33

There are lift and drop sentences in Rishi and Sajid's letters so it's clearly been planned together. Wonder if anyone else is in on it.

SausageinaBun · 05/07/2022 18:34

Bizarrely brought down by someone else's sexual transgressions instead of his own. Wouldn't have predicted that.

achillestoes · 05/07/2022 18:34

Wallace isn’t resigning, neither is Patel or Kwasi Kwarteng.

Liz Truss reported as saying she’s 100% behind Boris.

achillestoes · 05/07/2022 18:35

@SausageinaBun

That’s a surprise to all of us.

I’m sad too, I don’t think Johnson’s a bad man. He has his demons.

He's a habitual liar, corrupt, sexually incontinent, lazy, a lawbreaker ... that's a bit more than demons.

Portillista · 05/07/2022 18:36

On your bike, Boris.

Let's have a proper Conservative government (and preferably one which will reverse Brexit, though that's too much to wish for in one post).

BreadInCaptivity · 05/07/2022 18:36

The timing is such that Boris's replacements will be in situ well before the next General election and will have hoped to have undone the self-inflicted damage by then.

Exactly. The Tory's are damn ruthless when they decide a leader is a liability they don't want to face the electorate with.

They know they've got act now - Pincher is the straw that broke the camels back.

They will re-group under a new leader.

This is actually really bad news for Labour.

RedToothBrush · 05/07/2022 18:36

The sharks are circling for Johnson then.

I think thats the only conclusion I'm going to draw...

I hope Johnson doesn’t try to force a GE I’d rather see him taken out

There’s no way he’s deluded enough to think the conservatives will gain seats in a GE surely?

Actually what am I talking about, it’s Boris - nothing could surprise me anymore.

As much as I can’t stand having him as the PM I wouldn’t mind if he stuck around a while more to continue making the tories even more unelectable. With some of the more popular party members leaving, it’ll be interesting to see where the party is headed.

achillestoes · 05/07/2022 18:37

@BreadInCaptivity

And (potentially) good news for children.

Unless he resigns, he's got to find someone to fill those roles. That would be career limiting to anyone picking them up. Nads for Chancellor?

Rogue1001MNer · 05/07/2022 18:37

But which of the twunts will replace him?

Provenceinthesummer · 05/07/2022 18:38

So glad Sajid has resigned he is useless!! But it does rather indicate a leadership battle potentially on BOTH parties now. Jesus not great for the county that needs focused minds.

I am surprised Sunak lasted this long - it’s far nicer to spend the summer on a Mediterranean yacht you know than scrambling over a cost of living crisis.

Government has hours left, not days. Oh well. I'm sure a properly socialist government will be installed in no time.

Out the frying pan into the fire.

MarshaBradyo · 05/07/2022 18:38

I don’t want to see it as I think those leaving are better at what they do

Although I also like Wallace and Kwarteng

80 seat majority to this mess, so depressing

AmaryIlis · 05/07/2022 18:40

Gove was looking very thoughtful this morning. Is he the next?

FigRollsAlly · 05/07/2022 18:40

Wonder what Nadhim Zahawi will do. Hasn’t he said some sensible things on sex education recently?

Mollyollydolly · 05/07/2022 18:40

I really hope Saj wins any leadership bid. He seems relatively sensible, and as things stand there's every chance they could still win the next election. He's seemed sensible at health and doesn't seem depraved, which is a start.

MarshaBradyo · 05/07/2022 18:41

Out the frying pan into the fire.

nicely taking U.K. to burnt toast

Sajid for PM and Rishi back as chancellor is my guess.

LoobiJee · 05/07/2022 18:43

Interesting that, of all the past examples which could have been regarded by senior male Conservatives as evidence of lack integrity or lack of competence sufficient to trigger a resignation letter, the incident that finally triggered resignation letters was a senior male Conservative groping junior male Conservatives and then being given a job.

Tirednurse1 · 05/07/2022 18:44

I hope this marks the end of the Tory government. I know that’s too good to be true. Even if they called a GE I imagine they’d hold on to power.

I wonder which white, pale, rich male will be waiting in the wings (or female but seems unlikely and no improvement).

BJ is a millionaire (and married to a millionaire) with many lucrative ‘jobs’ in the pipeline. Unless you hate the poor, hate the working class, hate the NHS, hate the disabled, hate the LGBT+ community and hate the rest of the UK I wouldn’t be feeling sorry for Tory scum.
