Getting their arses handed to them in the comments, it's rather heartening to see that people have really had enough of this.

Although AndyM here is prepared to defend it to the hilt by actively encouraging customers to close their accounts 😬

Awkward conversation with management about the goal being bringing in customers and not telling them to bugger off for Andy in the office tomorrow perhaps!

‘So those who disagree with an argument must take the extra trouble to write something down and not just click a button.’

That’s true. It also fails in the sense that nearly everyone who thinks specified pronouns are a good idea is on Twitter, but the majority of their customers won’t be, and this got into the mainstream press. Dopes.

achillestoes · 29/06/2022 20:50

8,000 negative comments in a day is bad by any standard, really.

LeniGray · 29/06/2022 21:05

I’m tempted to switch my Halifax account to Nationwide 🤔 Screw Halifax.

Activists are also often mobilised as a group. That goes for both sides of the issue, of course, but must be taken into account when evaluating these things.

But yes, political Twitter is certainly not a good representative of reality. One study showed that there is a small number of male voices, most of them white, whose tweets get the majority of attention on political Twitter, and another study, about US participation on Twitter showed that the Republicans and Democrats who tweet about politics are more extreme than the actual average voter in those parties.

achillestoes · 29/06/2022 21:12

Yes, massively - the more active you are on political issues on Twitter, the more extreme you’re likely to be. But pronouns don’t cut through to the majority of people. I’ve never seen anyone in our local M&S with one of these badges. Never had anyone in real life introduce themselves to me on this way. Never been asked for my pronouns. It‘s an example of a company alienating core business for a fringe issue.

achillestoes · 29/06/2022 21:12

(I say M&S because I know they offer the same thing.)

Blackandwhitehorse · 29/06/2022 21:14

Not sure if this is real

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 29/06/2022 21:16

TeresaBlue Yeah, if that's actually his personal account, that must be enough for gross dismissal!

You're probably right that he'd already marked his card with the tweets before that. I didn't think they were so bad that they would get into the national press, but they were. Halifax can't possibly want to be in the Stonewall top 100 that badly.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 29/06/2022 21:17

Blackandwhitehorse · 29/06/2022 21:14

Not sure if this is real

It's got to be someone posing as Andy.

RoyalCorgi · 29/06/2022 21:17

I very much doubt that screenshot is genuine, because if you'd lost your job, you wouldn't do that, would you? Funny, though.

I find the whole idea of any business outside Fawlty Towers deliberately being rude to its own customers very peculiar. I think this trans issue has literally driven people mad.

achillestoes · 29/06/2022 21:20

I hope Andy doesn’t end up under the bus. It’s just a social media job, mate. Step away from the keyboard and go and have a drink with your mates. I’m sure he/she/they/fae are much better company than your line manager.

WooFighters · 29/06/2022 21:21

Well Nationwide has left Stonewall Champions scheme so I am happy to reward critical thinking skills.
DH is persuaded by the cash incentive. Anyone know how much of a ballache their internet banking is? We don't use apps as we're oldschol and have ancient phones.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 29/06/2022 21:23

I can confirm that the tweet exists, but this is definitely a person identifying as Andy. It is not the real Andy M.

Nationwide's internet banking is really easy. No smartphone required.

(I am not getting commission for this.)

RainingYetAgain · 29/06/2022 21:25

Sadly, its 45 years too late for me to close my account. I did that when the Halifax Building Society told me that they didn't lend to single women. I took the deposit out there and then, and took the cheque across the road to another company who did lend to single women.
Still run by idiots I see.

LeniGray · 29/06/2022 21:26

I work with customers on the high street, and my company is widely seen as very inclusive and woke. Nobody I work with would voluntarily wear pronoun badges, and if there was even a whiff of something like that being brought in, I’d be in touch with HR. If that’s Andy’s real account, it wouldn’t surprise me if he’d been sacked, or suspended pending investigation.

Blackandwhitehorse · 29/06/2022 21:27

Haha yes it’s fake - you could say it’s not cis Andy M it’s trans Andy M

WooFighters · 29/06/2022 21:35

Thanks great incentive to move then. Previously moved banks for pure financial.gain but nice to know that I have a moral reason too.
I'm sure a portion of the welcome.money can go on gardening projects too.

Thank you, posters on this thread, for connecting in my mind 'preferred pronouns' and female-male earnings gaps. Now I think of a lapel sticker with 'he/him' on it as advertising "I'm paid x % more than if this sticker said she/her".

Yes although it's more than that. With a bit of luck (and buying in some training on gender ID) more of their higher earning males will adopt "she /her" identities, thus narrowing their gender pay gap.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 29/06/2022 21:48

It is to be hoped that this will be a salutary experience that leads to Andy developing some insight into why we have a #NotOurCrimes campaign.

endofagain · 29/06/2022 22:00

Nationwide are excellent.

Holllllyyy F

If that is the employee he is unprofessional.

He just pushed that whole twitter account into the Bank's IT and Data Protection and Insider Info policy. There are good reasons of why employees do not use their personal accounts in regulated industries.

SummerPuddings · 29/06/2022 22:19

Hilarious. Twats.

letitcomedown · 29/06/2022 22:19

Personally, I'd rather badges have how to pronounce the persons name. That would be amazingly inclusive for non-English names and helpful to customers. You don't actually tend to use pronouns when dealing with staff unless you're complaining about them or have a problem!
