LGB Alliance to plan helpline with Lottery funding

Fantastic news.

I would link to their Twitter announcement, but in usual state of play, Twitter has marked it ' may not be appropriate for people under 18'. A helpline planned for 13 to 25 year olds, planned by a panel of experts in child protection, education, helpline delivery, fundraising and psychology.

Yep - shut them down (much better to have helplines planned by IT workers who took their child to Thailand...)

As LGB Alliance state there is no dedicated national service of its kind for young LGB people in the UK.

I'm sure the Lottery Fund will be getting a lot of feedback right now, given the outpouring of hyperbole against LGB Alliance right now on Twitter.

So they may appreciate feedback from those who may see this as a positive move too:

""We really value your feedback. If you have a comment or complaint about the services that we provide, or if there's something important you think we should know, we'd love to hear it. Please email us at [email protected]"

There doesn't seem to have been quite the furore when Mind launched the Mindline Trans helpline, solely focused as 'an emotional and mental health support helpline for anyone identifying as transgender, non-binary, genderfluid…'

mindlinetrans.org.uk/

The 'T' can be separate, but god forbid the LGB might sometimes need separation from the T.

Anne Hegarty from The Chase, being chased down because she follows both JK Rowling and, shock, LGB Alliance.

"Keep them away from children..." twitter.com/HeteroUpsettero/status/1535331281579417600🙄

Many 'know your history' tweets like this:

Guessing this is a 'Marsha P Johnson' take, ignoring Storme once again!

Many, many 'name one thing the LGB Alliance has done for the LGB community' tweets:

Well, you know, maybe tried to set up a helpline specifically dedicated to LGB issues!

Brilliant news. This could save kids from so much distress, and serious harm. And literally no-one better than LGBA to get this right.

I feel right cheered up!

Birdsweepsin · 10/06/2022 21:05

Am I right that so far all the noise is from the Lone Trangers, rather than mermaids/ stonewall etc?

MaudeYoung · 10/06/2022 21:06

This is very good news indeed. A much needed resource for young people working through their sexuality.

As ever, the trans lobby opponents of LGB Alliance prove LGBA's point: that exclusive resources for Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals are most definitely needed because otherwise the trans lobby demands to dominate everything.

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/06/2022 21:07

Good, sounds sensible use of funding.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 10/06/2022 21:11

Im delighted for them & really hope the lottery don’t cave to the tantruming. There’s no way the Lottery dont know who LGB alliance are

WildIris · 10/06/2022 21:20

Sounds brilliant!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 10/06/2022 21:28

This demonstrates the difference between groups like the LBG Alliance (and most of the new women's groups) that work hard to support others via the use of thoughtful resources carefully targeted versus those groups with a modus operandi that trashes and bullies others for their own self advancement.

Don't forget - those with Amazon Prime accounts can link their accounts to Amazon Smile and nominate the LGB Alliance as their preferred charity.

Mollyollydolly · 10/06/2022 21:35

Great news - really hope the lottery dont cave in. A much needed resource. The response on twitter though .. absolutely deranged. So many brainwashed people.

Hagiography · 10/06/2022 21:38

Excellent news. And thanks for the tip re Amazon, will do that forthwith.

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/06/2022 21:41

great news

chilling19 · 10/06/2022 22:11

Great news! Practical help.

camphire · 10/06/2022 22:13

This is great news. My almost 13 year old knows she is a lesbian and although we as her parents are very supportive we have no lived experience. She asked if I could find her a lesbian counsellor recently and it''s been impossible. Everyone just advertises as LGBTQ+ which could mean anything. I don't want someone who is going to tell her she's a boy because she fancies girls.

Hopefully this line will be up and running soon so she can benefit from it.

NonnyMouse1337 · 10/06/2022 22:28

This is fantastic news. I hope the initial assessment goes well and enables them to plan for a dedicated helpline.

Rightsraptor · 10/06/2022 23:00

Setting up such a helpline is something Stonewall should have done. The old Stonewall that is, the one that fought for the demographic it was set up to advocate for and not this homophibic Mark 2 variety. You couldn't entrust that shower with organising the proverbial piss up in a brewery.

Signalbox · 11/06/2022 08:10

What’s the betting this funding will be withdrawn? Or at least “suspended whilst an investigation takes place”. TRA twitter are having a complete tantrum.

Somanysocks · 11/06/2022 08:33

Surely it's a good thing. What is the T so afraid of, that they may not be able to expand their club and make themselves more front and centre than they already are?

Youngster need help and guidance not irreversible indoctrination.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 11/06/2022 08:33

Excellent news. I’ve sent a thank you email. I hope the TRAs aren’t allowed to sabotage this.

achillestoes · 11/06/2022 09:37

I don’t know what they’re afraid of either. If a young person phones the helpline because they’re wanting some advice or help about being gay, how do the TRAs work out that that’s a ‘threat to trans kids’?

zanahoria · 11/06/2022 10:18

@camphire

You have summed up the situation brilliantly

Your daughter obviously has good clued up parents.

I despair for some of the poor girls, especially after reading rot like this.

www.cosmopolitan.com/sex-love/a34553064/first-time-lesbian-sex/

It just a cruel joke

achillestoes · 11/06/2022 10:28

That is an extraordinarily unsexy article, isn’t it?

SunniDelite · 11/06/2022 10:37

I was invited to donate my Nectar Points to Rainbow charities yesterday, one of which was www.sparkle.org.uk/ It's funny how often the T's get away with not being inclusive.... Well done to the LBGA and the Lottery fund....

They got a grant from the arts council to make a film, but it was withdrawn after the predictable meltdown. Has anything changed on that or is it still withdrawn?
I hope the lottery hold steady.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 11/06/2022 11:24

They got a grant from the arts council to make a film

yes, billed as 'celebrating gay lives and marking 70 years since Her Majesty The Queen ascended the throne'. heaven knows what was objectionable about that.

This is great news and I hope it stands. If my DC have questions about their sexuality I wouldn't want them anywhere near stonewall. It's reassuring to know there might be somewhere they can go to speak to people solely about sexuality without gender identity clouding the issue.

It is quite astonishing (and very homophobic) that wanting to give young people the opportunity to consider that they may be gay or bisexual, without thinking about whether they may be 'in the wrong body' is problematic.
