Apologies if covered elsewhere, I didn't see it.

www.vice.com/en/article/g5vx8j/guardian-trans-journalists

As far as I can tell mostly triggered by a single article written about the 'cotton ceiling' in the light of its prominence in the Bailey v Stonewall etc tribunal - www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/may/29/if-lesbian-prefers-same-sex-dates-thats-not-bigotry-desire-personal-thing.

All seems a bit silly to me, regardless of which 'side' you're on. I don't know when things became so ludicrously tribal, I'm [sadly] old enough to remember the days when the Daily Mail gave a column to Roy Hattersley in the interests of balance. A very different time...

That was someone calling out another poster for calling black women sneering as far as I can tell.

But I'll donate to the London Black Women's Project happily

Done

You can stamp your feet, have your little tantrum
I've just got s different opinion to you, you read that as someone stamping their feet and having a tantrum?!
How bizarre, certainly no feet stamping or tantrums here and weird you think so.

SpindleSheWrote · 11/06/2022 13:13

I just want to know if Owen Jones, fairly regular-ish columnist for the Guardian, has acknowledged these resignations/withdrawals of freelance pitching from Freddy and Vic and acknowledged Ben Hunte's article at all?

I gather he's been tagged in to replies?

RoseslnTheHospital · 11/06/2022 13:19

Pluvia · 11/06/2022 11:26

You've never heard of Mr Menno? Mr Menno who's supported many women's rallies and given speeches and sung songs supporting women and LGB people?

No I haven't. There will be lots of other people that I also haven't heard of. I apologise for that. I have a busy life and don't get out much.

He wasn't really known outside of Posie Parker's circle before the blackface incident, there's many GC women really pissed off with him for making the movement look bad.

Nope. Nothing. No mention.

RhannionKPSS · 11/06/2022 13:49

Wee OJ will be hoping it will go away.

Hagiography · 11/06/2022 13:49

To be fair to him, it is likely to sink without trace. Already seems to have done so, in fact.

RhannionKPSS · 11/06/2022 13:55

Mr Menno ‘s stunt was misguided he was taking the piss out of the wee shits who were intimidating women. The name Black Pampers was coined by a Scottish guy and it is funny.
Mr Menno is a lovely kind man who has travelled to Scotland & Wales to support women & I’m glad to know him, especially his rendition of “ If a person has a penis , he’s a man “ He isn’t a racist, misogynist or anti anyone. He is pro women and children’s rights.

Has he made an apology video about this? It would be good to be able to send people somewhere when this is brought up so we can move on.

Plasmodesmata · 11/06/2022 14:22

Seems that Owen Jones, who is usually very quick to Call Out anything or anyone (especially women) that are deemed by the court of Twitter to be "transphobic" has missed this one. Somehow.

SpindleSheWrote · 11/06/2022 14:25

Perhaps Owen Jones isn't paying attention on Twitter?

Maybe he just doesn't hang out there very often? That must be it.

Nice summary.

A parody of the black paramilitary outfit, plus nappies - absolutely perfect.

You can't do a parody of the outfit simply by copying it.

Skin tight body suit is not blackface - blackface is blacking up with make-up.

BUT BUT BUT - it does look quite a lot like he is trying to look like a black adult baby, which I don't believe is racist, certainly not intentionally racist... but is ill-advised. Obviously one can never be 100% sure that you won't get false accusations of racism.... but you can make it less likely but not dressing like that.

If he was literally doing blackface to make some sort of point it would make a tiny percentage of the GC community look equally nasty and unhinged as the vast swathes of TRAs throwing around rape and death threats and making no sense, ever.

Soofle · 11/06/2022 15:01

Nice try, he was dressed as an black adult male in a nappy and it looked nothing like a paramilitary outfit, he was wearing a black wavy wig!

Skin tight body suit is not blackface - blackface is blacking up with make-up.

If you don't want to use the term blackface for this I guess 'darky' iconography is more accurate.

Even better, stop defending racism.

Nope wasn't wearing a black wavy wig. But you know the saying - a lie will get halfway round the world before the truth has got its boots on.

Black wavy wig, it falls off at one point in the video.

Clymene · 11/06/2022 15:21

It's a black wig. It's not wavy.

Clymene · 11/06/2022 15:23

And (I can't believe I'm having to type this), if he'd dressed up in paramilitary gear, he would have looked scary. He was trying to look silly. It was a parody.

Soofle · 11/06/2022 15:32

Clymene · 11/06/2022 15:21

It's most definitely wavy, look again.

He was trying to look silly

By dressing up as an adult black man in a nappy.

😒

It's not racist.

It's taking the piss out of Owen because he imagines himself as a great leader like Malcom X.

Yes, and this is obvious. I can’t quite follow the mental contortions in seeing this as an insult to Malcolm X.

ControversialOpening · 11/06/2022 16:34

It's easy:
1 - I don't agree with these people
2 - they're winning the argument
3 - I'm a bit stupid
4 - if i call them racist maybe everybody believe I'm winning

You've been told that black people do find it insulting (see Shaun King), why not just drop it instead of doubling down?

Can't believe someone who works for a company with major Saudi ties is that much up on their high horse. Want to take a stand for LGBTQ rights, well maybe don't work for a company taking Saudi government money and trying to rebrand Saudi Arabia as a tourist destination www.theguardian.com/media/2022/feb/01/vice-media-secretly-organised-20m-saudi-government-festival
