The LGB Alliance tweets from yesterday about gay men and monkeypox have been deleted by twitter for either homophobia or misinformation.

Ridiculous. Of course we won’t be in lockdown. There are very few cases compared to the population and you need close contact to catch it (which is why it hasn’t spread further than it has). Nobody has died from it in this country and we have medications to treat it. Stop fearmongering.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 30/05/2022 23:40

No. It's not covid- the fatality rate for monkeypox is currently higher than Covid, and at this point, surely everyone knows someone who died prematurely due to Covid?

I find the situation very disquieting. I don't want us to be here in two years' time, wishing venues had been closed.

The gay Community is very sensitive on these topics. A guy called Randy Shilts tried to raise awareness of Aids when it first appeared. But he was shouted down as a traitor and fear monger. His book And the Band Played On is heartbreaking.

I expect 'commercial sex venues' have more clout on Twitter than the LGB Alliance. No , monkey pox is Aids or Covid but it's no joke either if people are dying.

Sorrynotsorryyeah · 31/05/2022 07:40

Nobody has died from monkey pox in this outbreak outside of Nigeria. AIDS by contrast killed almost everyone who was infected. Monkey pox requires significant contact to spread and symptoms are usually mild. It’s not going to lead to lockdowns and pandemics. Also, shutting down sex clubs doesn’t stop people having sex with strangers and that includes straight people having tinder hookups. There’s nothing about the virus that makes it more likely to affect gay men (unlike HIV where anal tears made it more likely that a gay man would be infected) so why not call on a ban on every activity that involves skin to skin contact?

ResisterRex · 31/05/2022 07:44

Interesting thread for lots of reasons: Big Tech, origins and variants of disease, what happens if you do nothing, what happens if you don't recognise who's most affected etc.

Let's beware the attempts at derail and keep the thread up. Especially as the LGBA have been silenced.

PronounssheRa · 31/05/2022 07:51

so why not call on a ban on every activity that involves skin to skin contact?

LGBAs tweet called for the temporary closure of all commercial sex venues. Its right there in the opening post.

WHO have specifically provided advice for gay men.

www.who.int/news/item/25-05-2022-monkeypox--public-health-advice-for-gay--bisexual-and-other-men-who-have-sex-with-men

Let's be honest the people who mass reported LGBA are only interested in shutting the charity down, they couldn't care less about health messages.

ScreamingMeMe · 31/05/2022 07:55

It also doesn’t help that quite a few LGBA members are straight.

what?

tabbycatstripy · 31/05/2022 08:02

I’m not sure this was very wise. Personally I think the risk of spreading disease has to be high before public health measures like closing down all venues in a particular sector come into play. People can make their own choices and decide how much risk they want to take. And I say that thinking fetish clubs and so on (straight, gay, whatever) are not a scene I would want to be associated with.

Abhannmor · 31/05/2022 08:05

Opinion is divided on the LGBA Facebook page. But I can't see a reason for their Twitter account being closed. I expect those nice cuddly liberal fascists at Stonewall, Tavistock, Mermaids et al are behind this. Here in Ireland they try to paint LGBA as interfering Brits. In the UK the plan seems to be to smear them as straights or Tories. But reality will come crashing in.

Sorrynotsorryyeah · 31/05/2022 08:07

You can tell people to be careful without calling for businesses to be shut down. What about the owners and staff of those venues? What support would they get when their livelihoods are taken from them? I’m surprised that people can advocate for this after what we have just been through with the pandemic and the devastating effect it had on many. These are adults we are talking about. Let them make their own choices.

tabbycatstripy · 31/05/2022 08:09

I agree that it’s not hate speech or ‘misinformation’. It’s just an opinion with which people are allowed to disagree.

NecessaryScene · 31/05/2022 08:09

You can disagree with people without calling for their Twitter to be shut down.

ResisterRex · 31/05/2022 08:11

I'm sure none of those reporting decided to take umbridge at "I'm with the gays" (perhaps a collective noun soon to appear in the SW glossary under "reclaimed")

That is a difference of opinion, which is fine. It doesn't mean that the original tweets were either homophobic or misinformation, which is what the OP is about.

I didn’t say their Twitter should have been shut down. I said that they were wrong to put out the statement.

tabbycatstripy · 31/05/2022 08:21

The tweets seem to be back up.

Beowulfa · 31/05/2022 08:26

Peter Tatchell and a doctor specialising in this field were on R4 on Saturday morning discussing how to advise the gay community without being alarmist or stigmatising. It was a respectful and sensible conversation.

If you disagree with the LGBA's suggestion of closing certain venues, then have a grown up conversation about it.

what?

From Allison Bailey's tribunal - around 7% of their members identify as lesbian. Similar to general population

This claim, an attempt to undermine and discredit LGBA, is popping up all over FWR lately. I can only conclude that Allison’s tribunal has Stonewall and the TRAs rattled.

It isn't "lesbian or straight alliance" is it?

Less than 1% of females identify as lesbian/gay in the gen pop.

That was from 2017. 2019 figures here. 1.1%

The Tavistock and Portman is made up of more than just the gender identity clinic. There are many many people who work in the Tavistock who have nothing to do with the gender identity clinic and many who are gender critical.

NecessaryScene · 31/05/2022 08:43

14% of women are lesbians? Really?

And what was that quote actually talking about? Not sure it's saying what you're claiming to be saying. I'll dig...

Bluyello · 31/05/2022 08:49

It's Kate Barker of LGBA who claims 7% in that screenshot

AlisonDonut · 31/05/2022 08:52

They will then use this, as a sign that the LGBA don't care about gay people as they never tweeted about this.

Because the people that reported them, care more about virtue signalling than actual people.
