"I don't think it helps for politicians to define this". I mean, wft does she think their job is?

@Beowulfa

This reminds me of a key moment in the election where May fluffed gaining a majority. She was asked by a local radio about the vulnerability to flooding of the main train line into Devon and Cornwall. She could have just honestly answered that she'd never lived in the South West and wasn't up to date on the latest state of rail infrastructure, but that it sounded serious and she'd look into it. Instead she did her typical mumbled robotic non-answer. How can politicians not realise that just spouting a pre-prepared line just pisses people off!

I don't expect politicians to be experts in every single issue facing Britain, but I do expect them to recognise what sounds important and do some further research.

I think she fluffed that Election over the social care proposals for England and Wales and then denying what they actually meant by them.

@tabbycatstripy

Rayner used to retweet Mermaids stuff quite regularly, didn't she? I think she eventually realised that didn't make her look good, but she still stands with the people who want to give PBs, cross sex hormones and surgeries to distressed children.
IIRC Mermaids deleted a lot of / some (?) tweets with MPs and others in summer 2021. Some of the replies are still there:

The new hot take on this line of questioning ('can women have penises?') is that it's 'anti-feminist' to 'reduce women to walking vaginas or baby making machines'. (twitter.com/misszing/status/1508751235746258949)

Right, so it's bad to reduce women to walking vaginas so therefore women can have dicks. That...doesn't make any sense.

tabbycatstripy · 29/03/2022 13:28

Angela Rayner would 'love a world where [Mermaids'] work wasn't so vital'?

What does that even mean?

I am not reduced by the recognition of my unique features. I am not reduced by my capacity to bring children from my body. It's only sexists who think that represents a reduction. I think it's a miracle.
miri1985 · 29/03/2022 13:29

I can understand not having a definition to hand of every little thing, if someone asked me for a defintion of even a common phrase or concept I think I'd struggle because well everyone knows what for example a table is. If I was a politican though and the same question had been asked to multiple of my colleagues you'd better believe I'd have a defition on the tip of my tongue ready to go.

All this flapping about and faux consternation makes them seem like idiots, you know you're getting asked this question, prepare, come up with your definition of woman and man so that people know where you stand.

I wonder if it would be degrading to define what a trans woman is?

ChristinaXYZ · 29/03/2022 13:38

If you cannot define women you cannot protect them. If you cannot use language precisely what use are you in the legislative assembly.

If you twist every question about men and women to cover the small number of transitions then you let the whole country down. For the confused teenager to the completely-foxed-with-all this-bull elderly lady or man.

Between this and the antisemitism I'll never forgive the current Labour Party. Not the leadership, the shadow cabinet and the prominent Labour people with a platform to speak out who don't.

I'd like to vote Labour again one day and I hope someone comes along in a decade or so who makes that possible. I could not trust them in government with the rights of me, my daughters, my nieces and any other women until they've completely cleared this lying, identity-obsessed group of women-haters out.

Someone on twitter has added vids if you have not seen it btw

@Swayingpalmtrees

Or that bloke who runs Edinburgh Rape Crisis clinic who said victims need to "reframe their trauma"

I am assuming he has now been sacked, and apologies made to the victims?

Still in the role I think. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/activists-call-for-inquiry-into-rape-crisis-centre-trans-appointment-pghdvkxsl

Sturgeon's mantra is that she is 'feminist to her fingertips' and that there is 'no conflict between women's and trans rights'.

OvaHere · 29/03/2022 13:46

The Times have just put this on their front page. Comments turned off on this one unlike the one about Starmer.

tabbycatstripy · 29/03/2022 13:50

They need to start asking them whether men have penises.

DomesticatedZombie · 29/03/2022 13:57

I can't see it, what does it say?
BootsAndRoots · 29/03/2022 14:22

Just ask her "are you a woman simply because your testosterone levels are below 5 nmol per litre?".

Because that is the definition for a man to be allowed to participate in women's competitive sport.

Needmoresleep · 29/03/2022 14:26

On a day when awful stories are starting to emerge of Ukrainian wpmen being raped by young drunken Russian conscripts, Angela is sounding very tone deaf. Vulnerable women should always be protected and it is the duty of women like her to speak up.

LauriePartridge4Eva · 29/03/2022 14:45

Rayner was an absolute joke on GMB. She was asked TWICE by Madeley to define a woman and she droned on and on about crap. Every single onlooker, even the poor deluded idiots who actually seem to believe in this shite, would have almost died of second hand embarrassment.

Although I did like Susannah's sharp little comment at the end on what an extraordinarily long time Rayner devoted to a simple definition. The disdain was positively DRIPPING.

Franklin12 · 29/03/2022 15:04

I wished they had pushed her harder. Morgan would have…

samsalmon · 29/03/2022 15:22

How on earth can you make/discuss law or policy around a term if you can’t provide a definition of it?? That is literally her job.

ResisterRex · 29/03/2022 15:37

Later this morphed into "people don't ask me have you got a penis"

order-order.com/quote/rayner-people-dont-ask-me-have-you-got-a-penis/

Angela Rayner tells Times Radio
“I don’t get asked – I present as a woman, people don’t ask me, “Have you got a penis.” And I think that’s wholly right. And there’s protections in place to protect women only spaces and vulnerabilities around that. And there’s protections in place to support people who are transitioning, who have identity concerns. So I think that actually having a debate on social media on commentators like this is not the way to conduct our affairs in this matter. We have laws at the moment that protect people. And I think we should be making sure that people are aware of that not debasing it down to what genitalia someone may or may not have. I’d be offended if someone asked me what my genitalia is. And I don’t think it’s appropriate to do that to any person. What we need to do is have protected spaces where people feel comfortable. And when it comes to identity issues that should be dealt with, with the experts at supporting people through their individual circumstances.”

Hasselhoffsheadband · 29/03/2022 16:34

This is another reason I can't vote Labour. They think so little of the people they expect votes from, think we are so thick and easy to manipulate, that they will just basically say 'I'm not willing to talk about this because...reasons oh and also, be kind' and they think that we will buy that shit and vote for them!

Fuck off.

WinterTrees · 29/03/2022 16:47

Why on earth would anyone ask her what genitalia she has? Why is she bringing that up like it's something GC feminists are interested in?

It's obvious she's a woman and presents no threat in women's single sex spaces (though she is putting our hard-won rights in danger.) It's only 'women' like Karen White whose genitalia are pertinent to this discussion. And that's because Karen White is not a woman.

< scratches head > < listens out for clocks striking 13 >

bootsyjam · 29/03/2022 16:52

I think my favourite bit in this shameful interview was when Rayner said "it shouldn't be debased by debates by people in media by people who are not qualified to discuss these issues."

Brilliant.
I'm not sure what qualifications are necessary but it's good to know that the second in command of one of the biggest political parties is directly advocating for people to stop debating the issue 'unless they're qualified.'

Cancel culture from Rayner sounds so much more intellectually driven doesn't it?

tabbycatstripy · 29/03/2022 16:57

‘ It's obvious she's a woman and presents no threat in women's single sex spaces (though she is putting our hard-won rights in danger.) It's only 'women' like Karen White whose genitalia are pertinent to this discussion. And that's because Karen White is not a woman.’

Because we’re meant to be playing along with the idea that natal sex is not nearly always very obvious, regardless of how a person ‘presents’. We’d have to ask a man to show us his penis in order to know he was a man, and we want to see his penis because we’re weird, debased, obsessed people who want to see people’s genitals?

Hasselhoffsheadband · 29/03/2022 17:31

Yes, because the only way that humans have been able to tell apart men and women since the dawn of time is by looking at each others genitals....Hmm
