It appears she said at the BAFTAs 'I am here for all of the witches... bar one'

Disappointing but not unexpected.

Can I just point out, it is perfectly possible to be intelligent and a complete idiot.

Agree. You only have to look at our present PM for an excellent example.

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 15/03/2022 09:16

I'm going to come clean.

I have no idea what she said or why she said it, or why Rebel Wilson said what she said, and what it all means, if anything.

backintothefire · 15/03/2022 09:16

Regardless if she had indeed said this inaccurate "bar one" phrase and not "by the way" (what she clearly actually says if you watch the video) I would still support her

Huh. Interesting. Personally I prefer to support women who don't shill for woke cookies at the expense of others but hey, we're all different I guess.

ATeamAmy · 15/03/2022 09:19

Thats unlikely to be a massive casting option because fuckability is still a factor. Very few actors are given or can carry character roles which has no sexual tension or relationship conflict element and are box office winners. So a male even with the best plastic surgeon's is going to have a limited role offers.

Don't know you saw Inventing Anna, but Laverne Cox* took the role of a biological female who exists in real life, and was the only character that was shown having a sex life/being overtly sexy. Perhaps as long as biological female black actors are the only ones missing out on such roles, the likes of Watson can bask in the glow her industry's "inclusivity".

*Another terrible actor, but then I suppose they have a double acting job to do.

Crimesean · 15/03/2022 09:22

She's definitely saying 'by the way', and I'm not sure we can read to much into her meaning.

I think she's a coward to have made previous comments about JKR, but on this particular occasion I'm not sure it's right to assume it's a dig.

BookkeeperBobby · 15/03/2022 09:22

She's twitching a lot in that clip isn't she.

Silly childish behaviour which won't age well.

Surely she wouldn't be so slyly spiteful?
I feel like there must be an alternate explanation.

Hate to break this one to you but, as an Ivy League alumnus, I’m going to take a punt she’s a damn lot more intelligent than most of the posters here.

She’s no doubt academically clever but I think it would be naive to assume her fame didn’t help her achieve her Ivy League place. I’m not sure she’s any more intelligent than many other top university graduates of which Mumsnet has plenty.

senua · 15/03/2022 09:27

Watson definitely says "bar one".
If, by any chance, she did say "by the way" what would be the reason for mouthing it? She would have said it out loud, to emphasise her point.

ImInStealthMode · 15/03/2022 09:28

@ATeamAmy I was thinking of Laverne Cox in that role when I wrote my original comment. Of course the same actor had a significant role in Orange is the New Black but was playing a trans character. Inventing Anna is the first time (to my knowledge) I've seen a TW play a biological female. I suspect it won't be the last.

Grin
What is the appropriate behaviour for a lady in public nowadays?
One must have missed that lesson from my Young Lady Finishing School days.

@PierresPotato

It's clear she mouths 'bar one' or 'but one' - why would she need to mouth 'by the way'

OP posts:
SamphiretheStickerist · 15/03/2022 09:29

I've just watched it again, no sound. And she only changes her mouth shape twice

By
The
Way

That requires three, unless you are a ventriloquist. And they are all different, narrower, than the two required for

Bar
One

That's how my lip reading friend explained it and I have no reason to doubt her as that is her main method of communication!

FussyLittleFucker · 15/03/2022 09:31

I have a friend who met her several times during the later HP years..not as a fan but through a work connection. When I asked what she was like they pulled this face > Hmm but were otherwise silent.
Her behaviour towards JK is a disappointment for young girls (IMO) when she could have been such a strong role model.

ImAvingOops · 15/03/2022 09:35

Even if she just said "all the witches", that's a clear dig at JKR. So more bitch than witch these days, which is a shame for someone who actively markets herself as a feminist.

Lots of people have an expensive education - it doesn't always translate into the ability to think critically irl!

speakout · 15/03/2022 09:44

I don't understand any of it- why the witch reference? And "all witches"???
Can someone explain.

longlines · 15/03/2022 09:45

It's clearly "by the way"

I totally agree that, in general, Emma Watson's behaviour towards JKR is disgraceful, and the other HP actors too.

But this is nonsense and makes us look silly IMO.

ImAvingOops · 15/03/2022 09:50

speakout, Rebel Wilson introduced EW as a witch. EW pointedly remarked that she was there for all the witches, by which she means trans women, which is a dig at JKR who does not consider trans women to be the same as biological women.

ImAvingOops · 15/03/2022 09:51

It was unnecessary and lacking in class.

IamSarah · 15/03/2022 09:55

@speakout This Tweet from JK Rowling might give it more context.

Rebecca Root had a small role in The Queen's Gambit playing one of the female orphanage staff (who in post war America I am assuming would have been biologically female, not a TW).

MurmuratingStarling · 15/03/2022 09:56

@IamSarah Great t-shirt!

MurmuratingStarling · 15/03/2022 09:57

@EeeICouldRipATissue

, So we’re fighting for womens rights by bringing another down?*

Exactly.
Feminism board my arse.

@EeeICouldRipATissue

So women are not allowed to criticize other women - ever? Because feminism?

Do me a favour. Hmm I'm not going to blow smoke up someone's backside just because they possess breasts and a vagina.
