It appears she said at the BAFTAs 'I am here for all of the witches... bar one'

Disappointing but not unexpected.

I can’t stand her but I think she said ‘by the way’.

NoSquirrels · 15/03/2022 08:46

It does look like ‘by the way’ to me, tbh.

PolytheneRam · 15/03/2022 08:48

Good.

MoniJitchell · 15/03/2022 08:48

Hate to break this one to you but, as an Ivy League alumnus, I’m going to take a punt she’s a damn lot more intelligent than most of the posters here.

George Dubya Bush attended both Harvard and Yale. It doesn't appear that intelligence is necessarily a prerequisite.

Lockheart · 15/03/2022 08:49

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Simply firing off insults doesn't cut it here.

This thread is full of posters doing nothing but firing off insults. But as they're against a woman who said the wrong thing that's ok I guess.

Whatever happened to 'when they go low, we go high'?

AeroMocha · 15/03/2022 08:51

@Chersfrozenface

"Alumnus - male grad Alumna - female grad Alum - gender neutral grad"

"Alum" is USian, not Latin, though.

Latin neuter gender would be *alumnum (asterisk used as in linguistics)

However, Emma Watson's preferred pronouns appear to be "she/her", and that is how the PP refers to her, so "alumna".

I thought (from the construction of the sentence) that the poster was referring to herself/himself/themselves as the Ivy League grad, and we don't really know what pronouns the poster uses.

I can see now that it was probably meant to refer to EW.

MurmuratingStarling · 15/03/2022 08:51

I have looked at the clip properly now. (Sorry @IamSarah didn't look before posting.) It DOES look like she says 'but one' or 'bar one.' Shock

WHY have the Harry Potter stars got so nasty about JK Rowling? Sad

I know a number of millennials who are like this; all full of hate for JK, even though they were massive Harry Potter fans for YEARS, and HP defined their childhood. They blather on about her (negatively) endlessly on social media, and yet in real life they still enjoy Harry Potter.

Watson is rather irksome isn't she? Hmm

SamphiretheStickerist · 15/03/2022 08:51

Oh! That always makes me laugh. So many times this gets thrown out, we must be thick etc. Yet we know, because of the in depth discussions we have here aon so very many subjects, that many posters here have all sorts of University level educations. Including me. I've mentored enough sports scholarship students into Brown to know how that gets done!

As for the "By the way" imagination - ask a lip reader! I did and she says "Bar one"

SarahBellam · 15/03/2022 08:52

I’d put money on her saying ‘by the way’. I can’t imagine her saying ‘bar one’. She’s classier than that and surely knows that there are many, many, people who agree with JK’s stance. As someone on here pointed out earlier, she’s not a stupid woman, so why would she deliberately choose to alienate people when she didn’t need to?

Awkwardy · 15/03/2022 08:52

"I'm here for all the witches. See you in All Bar One later"

housemaus · 15/03/2022 08:52

@FrancescaContini

She’s a nasty, spoilt child. And clearly very thick.
She's a grown woman, who didn't mention JKR whatsoever. Perhaps the person who is 'very thick' is the one who is calling a woman they don't know nasty and spoiled for daring to have a different opinion to someone else.

Whatever happened to 'when they go low, we go high'?

Absolutely. EW is entitled to her opinion and entitled to express it.

This kind of thread plays into the hands of those who believe GC feminists are as intolerant as the Trans activists they criticise.

Xenia · 15/03/2022 08:55

Pretty nasty of her and silly as so many women support JKR. I support her right of freedom of speech but she is only making herself look foolish and unkind.

Pennox · 15/03/2022 08:55

If you watch it with the sound off she clearly isnt saying by the way - its an aside to camera afterwards, not parr of the main sentence like by the way would be.

Im more educated than she is, by the way, and i think shes a bit sad, never quite living up to the early promise bestowed on her by JKR and always playing to the crowd.

She’s a fucking idiot, and no feminist

I don't disagree with anyone expressing an opinion, even if they are biting the hand that raised them to their current status. What Irks me is when the person criticising me, as a MN participant, expresses themselves in such a disdainfully clumsy way in spite of their Ivy League credentials. English obviously wasn't their "major" . Common sense mustn't have figured much either to make such a sweeping generalisation about such a diverse group

Mysterian · 15/03/2022 08:57

The idea that whatever Emma Watson ever says is somehow an attack on JKR is getting pretty ridiculous and embarrassing.

backintothefire · 15/03/2022 08:58

EW is entitled to her opinion and entitled to express it

Indeed she is. However she wasn't 'expressing an opinion' here, was she? No one was asking her about trans rights or JKR or anything. She just took an opportunity to make a completely unnecessary jibe against JKR, on national tv, just for the hell of it.

It's deeply nasty, snide and smug behaviour from someone who should know a hell of a lot better.

OutsideVoice · 15/03/2022 08:58

Is the screenshot with Rebel Wilson correct?

If so it looks like it’s a response to that.

CantStandMeCow · 15/03/2022 08:58

No they don’t.

The statistical assumption of censorship is that the majority view is the one people are afraid to talk about. Millions is a stretch. The silent majority do not support that view.

JackieWeaver101 · 15/03/2022 08:59

It's never difficult to make idiots fume.
