Emma Watson's dig at JKR

It appears she said at the BAFTAs 'I am here for all of the witches... bar one'

Disappointing but not unexpected.

@EeeICouldRipATissue

Any road up, without JK Rowling, Emmione Whatsit would have ended up in some horrible job. Her name's Emma Watson. Also this whole '' how dare you be so disrespectful to the person who made you, you little brat, you'd be nothing stuck in a crappy job without her! '' posts are a baffling take. We're supposed to be forever indebted to our former bosses now, are we?! Fuck that noise

No, we’re supposed to be adult enough to be able to separate our opinion on a person’s abilities from our views about a subject that has nothing to do with what they do for a living.
Exactly

@BoredZelda

Oh, I get it, we are supposed to pretend she's good?

No, we’re supposed to be adult enough to be able to separate our opinion on a person’s abilities from our views about a subject that has nothing to do with what they do for a living.

You'd all be bum licking her if she had the same opinion as you.

Exactly.

I'm not even particularly gender critical.

Watson is and always has been a vapid, vacuous , virtue- signalling airhead and a rubbish actress.

See for example that excrutiatingy embarrassing clip of her not scripted at all conversation with a friend about "her tits"

IamSarah · 15/03/2022 20:11

I bet 99% of women in prison or hospital etc have never come across a trans woman there.

There was a TW in my rape crisis group who may or may not have been a predatory male pretending to be trans. When I asked for a separate female only group I got barred from the RC centre.

So yeah, this stuff does happen.

I do understand why people don't believe it though, especially women from privileged backgrounds. I found it hard to believe until I experienced it myself.

She's definitely saying 'by the way'.

It was the mechanical acting that called it to mind.

LaTisaniere · 15/03/2022 20:14

@KimikosNightmare

The Independent, The Daily Mail, The Mirror and Pink News are all reporting it as a snub to JKR.
Of course they are, they know which story will get the most clicks. I'm seeing plenty of people saying of course it wasn't a snub, she clearly said "by the way".
Hasselhoffsheadband · 15/03/2022 20:15

I always thought Emma Watson was a crap actress - particularly in Beauty and the Beast, it was so bad! I thought that before any of the virtue signalling bollocks was on the scene.

I also thought Harry Potter was a bit crap generally, and still don't really understand why its so popular. I do love the Strike books though.

All of these opinions are outwith my opinion of Emma Watson and JK Rowling as people.

I didn't realise Hemma Watsit had actual fans!

Oh come off it. Watson's own fans were all over it on Twitter.

It was so obviously scripted "By the way" doesn't even make sense.

If you want to keep telling yourself that so that you can stay angry at a non-event, I won't stand in your way.

Where did I say I'm angry?

If you want to carry on deluding yourself that it was not intended as a snub I won't stand in your way.

vera16 · 15/03/2022 20:36

@SamphiretheStickerist

I've just watched it again, no sound. And she only changes her mouth shape twice

By
The
Way

That requires three, unless you are a ventriloquist. And they are all different, narrower, than the two required for

Bar
One

That's how my lip reading friend explained it and I have no reason to doubt her as that is her main method of communication!

I agree and she clearly makes the 'O' shape with her mouth for 'one'. Her mouth wouldn't make this shape for 'by the way'.

MangyInseam · 15/03/2022 20:46

I mean, if she comes out and says that isn't what she said, that would be significant

Just parking this.

No one uses BVI companies for the reason she claims.

EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/03/2022 20:48

What has what house she bought /tax havens got to do with anything with what she said?! Confused

WeHoldTheMoney · 15/03/2022 20:50

I was at the BAFTAs and the moment itself was odd, from Rebel's intro (which at the time actually sounded a little aggressive) to EW's reply. I hadn't noticed the 'bar one' until I saw the video but the response actually makes more sense now. And clearly set up.

From the crowd POV, "I'm here for all the witches" got an ok response (and a whoop) but I think if EW had said the entire thing out loud it wouldn't have gone down as well. It was quite a serious crowd - luvvies, yes - but I feel there's a reason EW didn't have the cojones to say the second part clearly.

She skipped over to Rebel afterwards and they hugged and giggled and were clearly very pleased with how it had gone. As I said, the lines were clearly staged. And a bit rubbish, considering.
My estimation of Emma Watson has sadly gone down since seeing that video. As someone posted earlier, despite their difference of opinion JKR has not slagged off the cast nor made disparaging remarks about them, unlike vice versa.

I feel the JKR hatred all stems somehow from young people fighting back against their mothers. She's the archetypal mother figure, isn't she? Beloved in a child's eyes, magical, pure - now they're fighting back, throwing punches against the thing they once loved most.

Nothing really - just pointing out her hypocrisy. She's such a leftist , activist blah, blah, blah. Except for paying her taxes- unlike the woman she snubbed over the Tube map and the Baftas.

At least her followers on Twitter are honest about this.

Maerchentante · 15/03/2022 20:56

She could have left it at the statement "I'm here for ALL the witches", but uttering bar one and that smirk afterwards made the meaning very clear to me.
Seems very childish, to be honest.

YoBeaches · 15/03/2022 21:13

I struggle as to how she uses the term 'witches' but then attempts to exclude JKr who promoted the phrase in feminism.

Emma's naive and lacking intelligence to misappropriate that.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/03/2022 21:18

Yeah I thought we Gender Critical women generally used the term Witches as a positive thing....
