Emma Watson's dig at JKR

IamSarah · 15/03/2022 07:39

It appears she said at the BAFTAs 'I am here for all of the witches... bar one'

Disappointing but not unexpected.

@EeeICouldRipATissue

What has what house she bought /tax havens got to do with anything with what she said?! Confused
In the red corner, we have a woman who left an abusive marriage, wrote a series of books which made billions, gave so much away that she downgraded her wealth status and set up and funded several charities to benefit women and children

In the blue corner, we have a woman who has led an extraordinarily privileged life, funded by the woman in the red corner, who plays at activism but who bought their house via a tax haven.

Anyone who backs the blue corner is putting personal prejudice above anything else. Objectively, JKR has done enormous good. Objectively, Watson has done fuck all.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 15/03/2022 21:29

She makes me CRINGE.

questconnect · 15/03/2022 21:36

I just watched it. My word, that is embarrassing. What could have convinced her that would be a good idea? She must be in a real echo chamber to think that making snide comments under her breath at an awards ceremony is the way to go. Goodness.

ldontWanna · 15/03/2022 21:54

I have massive love and support for JK Rowling.

However seeing the clip and how she was introduced, it would make more sense she's referring to Wilson rather than JK Rowling. It makes no sense, and there is no link or relevance.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=WKnsROQhEsw

Why the assumption it was at JK Rowling? Because the papers ran with it that way, more than likely to get their own dig/agenda in?

speakout · 15/03/2022 22:07

She says " By the way".. seems clear to me.

Rowling has been all over Twitter wearing the "these are the witches they didn't burn t- shirt" ( or whatever the slogan is). It's been taken up by gender critical feminists. Watson is bound to know that

The whole thing was painfully scripted.

Lockheart · 15/03/2022 22:24

JKR did not hire EW or pay her salary. What money do you think JKR gives to EW?

BlindGirlMcSqueaky · 15/03/2022 22:26

It's really fantastic for feminism in general, having an entire thread dedicated to finding various ways to call a woman stupid, immature, and terrible at her job etc ad nauseum because she may or may not have said something that you don't personally agree with.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/03/2022 22:27

@Fieldofgreycorn

Men are centred even within trans issues, transmen do not receive attention as they are females and still second class compared with men. Transmen...know your place (behind males).

Whenever trans men are mentioned the GC narrative immediately goes ‘trans men are not a threat to women we’re not talking about them!’ GC feminists won’t tolerate anyone talking about them!

You seem to have lost the tangent here. We were discussing Daniel Radcliffe, who stuck his oar in on a conversation about those people who menstruate, to say transwomen are women.

It was a discussion about transmen and Daniel changed it to transwomen. Dunno why.

ldontWanna · 15/03/2022 22:39

The whole thing was painfully scripted.

That would make some sense. Not 100% convinced but then again I don't have to be.
It all seems to have started on twitter and in comments. I wonder what came first... the defending of JK Rowling or the praise from trans advocates that saw what they wanted to see and ran with it causing all this?

Now that you said it, yes it's very possible it was scripted and deliberate.

It's also likely that the "audience" had more to do with who the comment was about ,than what was actually meant.

She's fucked anyways. If she stays quiet , all JK Rowling's supporters will keep in this similar vein. If she denies it all the trans activists that praised her will turn on her. Her past comments and attitude brought her in this position.

MangyInseam · 15/03/2022 22:41

I suspect he was confused about transmen vs transwomen.

She had a lot of input into casting. Watson is worth £60m. Do you think that she would be if it weren't for her role in HP?
MangyInseam · 15/03/2022 22:42

Re - Radcliffe

Lockheart · 15/03/2022 22:48

@Clymene I have no idea. But JKR still did not fund her as you claim.

Warner Bros / Disney and other film studios are how EW earns her money. They pay JKR for use of her creation and they pay EW to act in it. There is no funding of EW by JKR.

Clymene · 15/03/2022 23:11

You're either being stupid or obtuse @Lockheart so I'm not sure this conversation has much more mileage

You're the one who said EW was funded by JKR, which is demonstrably untrue.
BlindGirlMcSqueaky · 15/03/2022 23:22

Oh, look, even more people are stupid now. Fantastic.

In what world does the author pay the actors when the film rights to their book are sold to a production company?

Clymene · 15/03/2022 23:31

@BlindGirlMcSqueaky

Oh, look, even more people are stupid now. Fantastic.

When they are involved in choosing the actors. When they wrote the whole thing.

Surely this is not beyond your wit?

EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/03/2022 23:33

I know, right?!

EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/03/2022 23:34

The casting director will have had final say.
Surely that's not beyond your wit?!

BlindGirlMcSqueaky · 15/03/2022 23:37

Oh, now I'm stupid too, am I? Grin

Please do save me from the horrible men though....

The production company pays the author and the actors. Do you think JKR pays the DOP and the costume designer as well?

Missushbb · 15/03/2022 23:48

i thought she said "okay."

EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/03/2022 23:53

See, so far we've had
Bar one
By the way
Okay

Speculation
Nobody knows for definite.
It's still grounds for this shit show of a thread though

autienotnaughty · 16/03/2022 05:52

Ridiculous pointless thread. Finally got round to watching the clip. She says 'ok'

Yes it could be an inclusivity comment but if so how great is it that she publicly supported all women. Any true feminist would be supportive of that. 👏👏👏👏👏

autienotnaughty · 16/03/2022 05:58

@BlindGirlMcSqueaky unfortunately the 'feminists' on mn will happily exclude and attack any women who don't fit their idea of what a women should look like. Not dissimilar to men who think women should know their place.
