It appears she said at the BAFTAs 'I am here for all of the witches... bar one'

Disappointing but not unexpected.

Jesus, I had seen her 'witches' comment at the Baftas, but hadn't looked closely enough to see the 'but one' bit. She really did go there didn't she?

So has it been confirmed then?
As it's still all speculation as to what she did or didn't say if not.
We've had bar one, and by the way
Could be either and nobody knows for sure.

EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/03/2022 16:53

It's such a desperate 'pick me' dance: 'Males, look at me, look how much of an ally I am, pick me, pick meeeeeeeeee!'

Or, you know, another opinionated woman with a mind of her own.
Just this is one you don't agree with, so she can't possibly be thinking for herself and must just be '' doing it for the men. ':
Hmm

IamSarah · 15/03/2022 16:55

She isn't saying 'by the way'. That doesn't fit with her expression.

You don't need to be a lip reading expert to tell she's saying 'bar one' or 'but one'.

It's a weird comment in any case. Does she mean all women are witches? Or, what? What does that mean?

WinterTrees · 15/03/2022 17:00

Whether she is intentionally 'doing it for the men' or not, that's the outcome of what she advocates. The sidelining of women's rights to spaces and services that exclude men, and the centring of men's demands to access them.

@littlbrowndog

Rebel Wilson had a dig at JKR

"Now I might look a bit different from the last time you guys saw me here," she began telling the audience, adding: "I’ve done quite the transformation, I hope JK Rowling still approves."

then Emma Watson came on to present next.

Tbh the whole thing was weird

It came out of the blue when rebel Wilson was talking about her weight loss.

Dunno what JKR had a connection to her weight loss

So i googled her. She is apparently played "Fat Amy" in the movie Pitch Perfect.

Was this line a hehehe look I lost weight = male transformation?

If so, its welcome new misogyny, meet old misogyny.

BootsAndRoots · 15/03/2022 17:08

Rebel Wilson made the exact same joke when she was announced as the host a month or two ago.

LaTisaniere · 15/03/2022 17:29

Thanks Purgatory, sounds like an interesting read so will do so tonight!

SolasAnla · 15/03/2022 17:30

PurgatoryOfPotholes

I can't be bothered to decide whether it was 'by the way' or 'bar one', never mind whether it was an impromptu retort to Rebel Wilson or an attempt to distance herself from JK Rowling. I'm far more interested in whether she lends credibility to organisations that work against international efforts to end modern slavery (the majority of those enslaved are female, by the way).

Sex slave work is work may not be quite the celebrity tone anyone in Hollywood will want to rebrand as.

Applying first world laissez-faire capitalist economics to poverty is always harmful. One of the key elements female TRA allies ignore is that without a legal framework to support women's rights and advance women's economic /social freedom the Western First World social default is "male never pregnant"

Blossomtoes · 15/03/2022 17:34

She sure as hell isn’t doing it for women.

EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/03/2022 17:47

She sure as hell isn’t doing it for women

How about she's having her own opinion?!
Not trying to please anyone?!

babyjellyfish · 15/03/2022 17:52

I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with having her own opinion and everything to do with wanting to be seen as cool and woke.

Yup.

@LaTisaniere

I really used to think MN was a great place to come for feminist discussion, I used to respect what the posters were saying even if I didn't agree with them, but honestly, this is the nail in the coffin for me. The posters slating EW and calling her thick, a brat, nasty, an idiot, saying she bought her education, is a shit actress etc are giant fucking hypocrites.
She is a shit actress.
EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/03/2022 17:56

and everything to do with wanting to be seen as cool and woke

Sometimes people's opinions ARE woke though.
I know I don't give a shit whether anyone thinks my opinions are cool enough or not, she's probably the same.

IamSarah · 15/03/2022 17:58

This guy's sarcastic take on it made me chuckle

She always overperforms. As Hermione she would over-elocute. I thought it was a child actor thing (Daniel Radcliffe did it too) but she never grew out of it.
She overpronounces words and overexaggerates facial expressions.

It's extremely annoying.

Yes, let’s to continue to pick her apart for her skill in doing something most people wouldn’t even know where to begin with, because we don’t like what she (didn’t say) about JKR.

MargaritaPie · 15/03/2022 18:49

"overexaggerates facial expressions"

Ever seen a Jim Carey movie?

Oh I dislike her for much more than that. Smile

Yes, he's good in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind 👍🏼

Now there's someone who over exaggerates facial expressions Grin

Its Emma Watson, so it's ok when people do it to her, obviously.

If she wasn't trying to please anyone, she wouldn't have made such a snidey comment so publicly would she?

If she is so confident in her position that she feels she can publicly humiliate JKR, then why doesn't she write an essay of her own, why not state her position fully, rather than tweeting soundbites she knows will please and making cowardly remarks at awards ceremonies?
