Emma Watson's dig at JKR

It appears she said at the BAFTAs 'I am here for all of the witches... bar one'

Disappointing but not unexpected.

@DrSbaitso

She's a supremely shit actress anyway

I can't ever object to this being said, whatever the context. It's so painfully true. She is the absolute worst.

But the only point of saying it is to insult and denigrate. It adds nothing of value. I thought we were discussing what she may or may not have said, not her acting ability.
EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/03/2022 14:01

not very classy in this particular instance.

Damn, did I miss that lesson at Finishing School for Girls on how to be a proper lady that day too?!
(adds staying classy to don't be too twitchy'')

EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/03/2022 14:06

Staying classy makes me think of rolling my hair and wearing a 50s tea dress with a pretty floral and greeting my husband at the door when he gets in from work, and a '' how was your day, dear? ''
he'd look at me like I'd lost it if I did Grin
Anyways, I might have the definition of how a lady is to behave classy all wrong.
As I said, I missed that day so happy to learn from the feminism board how to be a proper, classy woman.

Sophoclesthefox · 15/03/2022 14:08

From the list above, I will own that it was me that said that she is such a poor actress that she fluffed the delivery of the line - that is actually relevant to the topic, because it made it all but impossible to discern what she really said, as the delivery was so poor.

Is it constructive? Probably not. To be honest, though, I mostly just ignore her, which is what I should have continued to do today. This kind of petty interpersonal bullshit isn’t really what I’m here for.

DrSbaitso · 15/03/2022 14:13

I do take your point, but politicians and world leaders aside, it really is unusual for someone to become so incredibly successful for something they are so, so, so demonstrably shit at. I've been saying it since the HP films first came out. Beautiful woman, and girl when she was one, but quite indescribably talentless at the thing she's supposed to be good at doing. She is absolutely without merit.

It isn't even a judgement, just a kind of amazed observation that someone so astoundingly shit at acting could become one of the most famous actresses of her generation. In a way, it's almost inspirational.

LaTisaniere · 15/03/2022 14:13

@Sophoclesthefox I believe that yours was the tamest but I understand that you meant it in the context of the rest of your comment, fair enough.

KittyLeMew · 15/03/2022 14:15

If she had the guts to genuinely stand up for what she believes at least you could attempt to find a sliver of respect for that. But she just tosses out a TWAW or some snarky little aside or meaningless fluffy comment without remotely going to bat or having to justify her support for a cause that erases women and girls, demands gay and lesbians become heterosexual, erodes their rights, steals their sporting achievements, impacts vital safeguarding and has sucked a generation of young people into making horrifying alterations to their body, rendering themselves sterile and patients for life. If she gave a shit she could step in for Grace Lavery in the debate with Helen Joyce. She could talk about it properly in interviews. She could tackle the issues and tell us why all of the above is okay as long as TW are validated. Her comments are cowardly and craven and are issued at no cost to herself. She’s the ultimate plopper and I have absolutely no time for her. And she can’t fucking act! But do crack on and enjoy watching the Perks of Being a Wallflower if that’s humanly fucking possible, I doubt it!

RonniePickering · 15/03/2022 14:16

I said she was a supremely shit actress 🙋🏼‍♀️
She is, and I think it's relevant to the topic of her treating JK like she has.
I highly doubt without the role of Hermione she would be known today.
I don't really take much notice of what she has to say anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️

BlindGirlMcSqueaky · 15/03/2022 14:18

Still trying to decide what exactly has been said to be angry about? Grin

DrSbaitso · 15/03/2022 14:20

She might be known as a fashion model. She's good at that.

All three of the main trio were shite, to be fair, although Grint is quite good at gurning, which was largely all Ron had to do as he was written in the films. Radcliffe was crap. He warmed up a little as it went on but that's not saying much.

ImAvingOops · 15/03/2022 14:27

Even if you don't believe that actors owe anything to the people who created their most famous and lucrative roles, the fact remains that JKR's presence has only resulted in good things for EW. So to actively go out of your way to publicly criticise her or make sly digs, says a lot about EW as a person and none of it is good! Although she's not as bad as the little scrote, who had the arrogance to apologise for JKR. How fucking delusional does a person have to be to think that was in anyway appropriate?

This isn't publicly criticising her though - all she said was '' I support all witches'' to RW introducing her as a witch.
That's her view, her opinion.
Unless we're back to the guessing game of what she may or may not have said again?!

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/03/2022 14:32

Continued silence on the matter of Mama Cash, Eel?

I suppose tactful silence compares well to the thread started and contributed to by brown mumsnetters, whereupon a white bloke from Manchester turned up to shout at them for doing their feminism wrong. Brown women, remember, it is up to white blokes from Manchester to tell you what things constitute issues for brown women and children! Always get their permission before you make threads!

Do you mean Daniel Radcliffe?
If so, again a grown man in his 30s.
This constant infantalising is bonkers.

ImAvingOops · 15/03/2022 14:32

That was Radcliffe iirc

EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/03/2022 14:34

Continued silence on the matter of Mama Cash, Eel?
Only because I don't have a frickin clue what you're actually going on about now.

ImAvingOops · 15/03/2022 14:35

Eeel I wouldn't refer to a child as a little scrote. It's an insult, but not an infantilising one.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/03/2022 14:39

Radcliffe. It was weird because the row was about women being referred to as menstruators in order to include female transitioners who had periods, and young females who identified as non-binary (and had periods) and he wittered that transwomen were women.

It should have been transmen were men and non-binary people were non-binary.

Absolutely. She's arrogant enough to make digs, but never to actually argue anything.

Dearie me. Have you not?

I can't be bothered to decide whether it was 'by the way' or 'bar one', never mind whether it was an impromptu retort to Rebel Wilson or an attempt to distance herself from JK Rowling. I'm far more interested in whether she lends credibility to organisations that work against international efforts to end modern slavery (the majority of those enslaved are female, by the way).

But, the Harry Potter child actors do actually owe their careers to Rowling, as Rowling made it a condition of her contract with Warners bros that they cast unknown, British actors for the child roles.

She wanted the film to make money for those who didn't already have it, as the books had done for her.

Now, could we please discuss the impact of Mama Cash in India?

justandfair · 15/03/2022 14:43

Sorry why does "bar one" imply JKR? It could mean anyone else lol!

LaTisaniere · 15/03/2022 14:43

@PurgatoryOfPotholes I'm confused as to why you've seemingly started a whole new discussion about something unrelated to this thread, on this thread? Or am I just completely missing something?
