Tom Daley Christmas message

Tom Daley is giving the alternative Christmas message on Channel 4 this year.

Scroll down the above page for the text of the speech.

I am fine with him praising Quinn but he skips over the other conflicting arguments and issues over including transwomen in women's sport.

He is however spot on with the ridiculousness of major sports granting the prestige of the top competitions to places with dubious human rights records.

Having a daughter who tried for several years to adopt in the UK, I figure that ignorance about the process is par for the course for many people.

Mind you, if the ignorant are living in a county where very young children and babies can be kidnapped from their parents, and then sold to people who want them while the parents are deported without them, all perfectly legal while records are carefully not kept, it's an understandable lack of comprehension.

Pregnancy is not a dangerous thing to do to your body…. Much says some posters. Imagine being a surrogate and having to go through abortions because the parents want to select the sex?

I cannot imagine the harm being done here. Deliberately.

VelvetChairGirl · 27/12/2021 16:16

Why is there a christmas message from an irrelevance?

its bad enough we get one from the queen without some other gob on a stick getting one too

Itsanewdah · 27/12/2021 17:10

He is amazing human being. His messenge made my Christmas, and the Christmas of many others.
And about surrogacy- i really don’t see the problem as long as all parties agree and are capable of consent. As they obviously did in this case.

UltraVividLament · 27/12/2021 17:16

There's one party involved that most definitely didn't consent.

I find it odd that some people can't see the issue with wealthy people buying babies from poorer people. In no other circumstances is buying a person acceptable, yet it's somehow ok when it's a baby and the parents are wealthy enough to pay for it.

Itsanewdah · 27/12/2021 17:19

@UltraVividLament in case you mean the child - kids never have a choice. same for all kids. some are born to narrow minded people, some not. some have great parents, some not.
otherwise i suggest reading up on surrogacy laws in the US. its quite regulated and certainly not “baby for sale“.

UltraVividLament · 27/12/2021 17:22

Why do you think that I'm ignorant of US surrogacy laws?? It's regulated to benefit the purchasing adults, not to assure the wellbeing and safety of the women being used or the babies being bought. Of course it's about buying babies. That's why Daley and his husband found a US surrogate rather than a UK based one.

Really? As opposed to any of the people on this list? If one were going to have an alternative Christmas message any one of them is far more worthwhile than Tom Dayley.

bordermidgebite · 27/12/2021 18:12

How can all parties agree when the most important party isn't born?

Helleofabore · 27/12/2021 18:28

And how is even the most subtle coercion checked and accounted for in this wonderful ‘consent’ driven transaction?

The very fact that women are donating eggs at a risk to themselves for money in the USA is an indication it has its problems. Sure, these women made the decision themselves and gave consent. Does having a stroke due to hyper stimulation of the ovaries when you are only finishing university for money count as acceptable collateral if you have consented due to financial incentive?

I'm so glad that silly comment about Daley was made, because that list is genuinely inspirational. Thank you for posting it.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 27/12/2021 18:33

I worry about Tom Daley (not very much) because he chose Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for his book on Desert Island Discs; I'm surprised he hasn't been unpersonned by now.

Seriously, what (apart from diving for his own benefit) has Daley done for the world? He wrote a letter to Boris Johnson about gay rights in Commonwealth countries, I think. Um... he wants to prevent a lot of people from being allowed to go to the Olympics because their countries have laws against gays... Can't really think of anything else. He's an entertainment personality.

Grin

Honestly, I don't know whether to be amused or frustrated. It's a book for eight year olds!

Am I a total snob for wondering why anyone listens to this person's opinions on anything, ever? Why did Channel 4 give him this platform? He doesn't read and his sole expertise is falling gracefully into water, which is ... niche. Like any Olympic athlete I'm sure he has self-discipline, which is a terrific personal quality, but he doesn't seem to have any kind of special ability to communicate or inspire. Why do people listen to this fatuous man?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 27/12/2021 19:52

Tbf generally I have time for Daley. To be at the top of his sport for as long as he has been and from such a young age takes incredible discipline and focus.

I also appreciate him speaking out about homophobia and the awarding of Olympic Games to countries that persecute LGBT ppl

However he’s simply wrong about trans ppl in sport. Biological men don’t belong in womens sports and he certainly at some level knows this, he just doesn’t care cos it doesn’t affect him. He’ll be thinking about his post diving career and he knows full well only total adherence too the mantra will see him get a good broadcasting career

In that scenario when it’s him v the needs of biological women, there’s only one winner

Successful sports ppl are incredibly selfish & focused, he’s just continuing in that vein

lunar1 · 27/12/2021 19:53

It's not even puberty alone that gives boys/men an advantage. My son is 13 and has been in competitive swim squads since he was just turned 7.

Even at that age boys and girls had to be in separate lanes as there was a clear difference in speed between the two sexes. None of the fastest girls could come close to the slowest boys by the age of 10. Well before you even factor puberty in.

As an elite sportsman Tom should know better.

allmywhat · 27/12/2021 19:56

I hope his calculation backfires and he can't get a job in future because women everywhere can't stand the sight of him. Going all in on the genderist side at this stage of the game, especially when it comes to TW in women's sports, seems like a tactical error. He'd be better off leaving himself room to backtrack.

KittenKong · 27/12/2021 20:07

I’m sure his hubby can get him a job in Hollywood.

I just don't know why people don't RTFT. It's so fucking rude. Hmm

“As long as all parties consent” Do you think that the people being sold consent ? Do you imagine that the women selling babies are as affluent and successful as the ones buying them ?
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 27/12/2021 21:21

After all, there is a flourishing market in some places for kidneys to use in transplants. Not because the people selling them have loadsadosh, that. More because they are desperate for $5,000.

NotBadConsidering · 27/12/2021 22:56

Ah the USA, such a wonderful place for surrogacy, where intended parents can’t write a contract stating they have control over a woman’s body, not her family, if she were to be in a vegetative state in order to incubate their baby to a viable gestation. What a wonderful precedent to follow Hmm
