He's come out as saying that he regrets taking the part of Lili Elbe in the Danish Girl, as he thinks it should have gone to a trans actor.

That's another issue, surely it's called 'acting' Eddie?

He has affirmed that TWAW and they 'just want to live their lives out peacefully and it's time to allow them to do so'.

So no-ones being harassed out of their jobs then Eddie? Children aren't being medicalised? Women aren't being told to shut up and be kind, and allow men into their safe and private spaces?

What makes a bloke like Eddie think he has any right to an opinion in something that does not affect him, just because he put on a dress and some lipstick for a role that he now regrets?

Yes even as I typed that I felt like I was writing in the News of the World in 1992.

TheLikesofMe · 24/11/2021 11:18

In about a century, there will be books on the shelves looking at this period of madness.

I wonder what it will be known as. I have no talent for that sort of thing but 'When the Lunatics Ruled the Asylum' or 'When the Tail Wagged the Dog' would do.

Ozgirl75 · 24/11/2021 11:26

My view on casting is that it should purely be based on the person who would be best for the part, and that sometimes casting someone, even a historic person, as a different race, is interesting.
Personally when it comes to sexuality, I couldn’t care less if a gay person plays straight or vice versa, again it’s the best person for the role.
My definite view is that people should not have to have the lived experience of a character before they can play them, in the same way that I believe authors can write what they like - if people don’t like a film, play, book etc, they can just choose not to watch it. It’s so weirdly limiting to suggest otherwise really. I would love to see more disabled actors in roles where their disability isn’t the main part of the story as well.

As for trans people, I guess just minimal art will be made about them because of the difficulty of casting. Do you pick a man and have them dress as a woman? Woman and dress as man or trans and have them start off as a “man” and then change? Surely that goes against the whole idea of their “true self” etc. if the role is purely a trans person then I suppose it does no harm as long as transition itself isn’t part of the story.

ScrollingLeaves · 24/11/2021 11:38

Thinking of gay actors who were heart-throbs - Rock Hudson and Dirk Bogart.

Ozgirl75 · 24/11/2021 11:54

Thing is, pretty much every on screen relationship is made up isn’t it? Like, I don’t assume Leonardo do Caprio is actually in a relationship with Kate Winslet any more than I believe that Jim Parsons is in love with Six from Blossom.

merrymouse · 24/11/2021 11:55

I believe that Jim Parsons is in love with Six from Blossom.

Blossom from Blossom surely - unless I have missed something? Is there a new TV show with Jim Parsons and Jenna Van Oy?

This the modern version of a lobotomy.

Only instead of family members feeling ashamed about the lobotomised sibling or mother or child left rotting in an asylum, they now celebrate it in schools and on social media as inclusion.

You know, I can't be bothered with him. I'll not bother spending my money on watching him again. I have really enjoyed some of his films but there's a limit to one's desire to support performers.

Didn't Sir John Gielgud once say "my dear boy, can't you just act?" To Dustin Hofman? Well, Eddie boy, throw away all your training, all those years of trying to get your name out there. Make room for people who take their Art seriously and treat it (and their audience) with respect.

Think of all those musicians who've trained so hard for years, who audition for orchestras, choirs, operas, do we want less than the best? No, we don't. We want the best musicians playing. Just like (gasp) we want the best actors. So, sorry, Eddie Boy, but fuck off to the far side of fuck and when you get there fuck off some more.

@SomepeopleareTERFSgetoverit

I am no longer interested in any penis-haver’s views on this topic. my rights are not Eddie’s to give away.
This is now my life's mantra. Sad? I am not sure but this is it in a nutshell.
Enough4me · 24/11/2021 22:40

Eddie can cut off his nose to spite his face by avoiding work opportunities. Others won't be so stupid and will continue as usual. His loss, plus he's quite drippy so no loss really.

ReversedFerret · 24/11/2021 22:43

If we're going to go to these extents, shouldn't the actor actually transition while in the role (with a sufficient break in filming for recovery, of course) so that the pre-SRS and post-SRS scenes could all be true to life? Why isn't Redmayne holding themself to account for failing to volunteer to do this? (I know all trans people do not necessarily have SRS, but Lili Elbe - famously and fatally - did, so in the interests of Eddie-world realism it would have been the right thing to do).

Enough4me · 24/11/2021 22:54

@ReversedFerret, I said he should cut off his nose, but I take your point...he should have had what seems to be lightly called bottom surgery to fulfill the role. He was a bit thoughtless in not seeing it through.

It was Olivier who said it to Dustin Hoffman when they were making Marathon Man. I totally agree wee Eddie should just shut up and fuck off.

But then how does he square away the fact that Lili was Danish? Isn’t that taking the part away from a Danish actor?
FlowerArranger · 25/11/2021 03:57

@fournonblondes

He lost me since he went against JK R.
This. So much this. Why can't he stick to acting...
Enough4me · 25/11/2021 07:33

In around 6 months he'll come out as gender queer, another 6 months it will be a new gender.

Actors seeking attention need a new gender, one so they don't feel left out as their egos are all hurt, poor them.

RVN123 · 25/11/2021 10:14

I agree with the simpering coquettishness of the Elbe character (the way Redmayne portrayed it) as being extremely annoying. Slap on a dress and some lippy and you obviously then need to act like a total quivering twat.

I wanted to punch him in the face every time he was on screen as Lili.

Not that I have strong feelings one way or the other of course.......

I quite liked his portrayal of Stephen Hawking and I think he has been good in some other roles too.

I think it's an impossible situation for white, male, straight, middle class actors these days. Seems that all sides are gunning for them and whatever they do will be wrong. Best strategy is to stay off social media and keep out of politics e.g. Tom Hiddleston and Henry Cavill.

The whole "who should play trans roles" thing is interesting. It does seem that trans actors are saying only they should play trans characters, but that it's also OK that they can play any other role that takes their fancy too.
There was an interesting discussion on Reddit about the fact that a transwoman played the headmistress in The Queen's Gambit and how this potentially raised confusing and detracting interpretations of the storyline.

IntermittentParps · 25/11/2021 11:13

I liked him in The Pillars of the Earth on telly, aeons ago.
TBH I've not been impressed since, with the fairly little of his work I've seen anyway. He was rubbish in Birdsong.

I don't disagree with this. I remember Benedict Cumberbatch saying he only ever got cast as his class or above, never lower. It must be frustrating as an actor to be typecast like that. And after all, he didn't choose his class or circumstances. And in fact he went to Harrow on a scholarship.
I went to see him in Hamlet at the National Theatre, and afterwards he and the rest of the cast were out with buckets collecting money for refugee children. More power to his elbow and who cares what school he went to or how he talks?

Andante57 · 25/11/2021 11:20

@MissMinutes24

Rich, posh, white, Old Etonian man Eddie doesn't see a problem. I'm shocked.
I am disappointed by what Eddie has said, but MissMinutes I’mIt sure what his background and education has got to do with it? Do you go on about the backgrounds of Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson etc about their unacceptable comments about J K Rowling? Unless you just take any opportunity to have ago at ‘posh’ people?
Iwishihadariver · 25/11/2021 11:41
