He's come out as saying that he regrets taking the part of Lili Elbe in the Danish Girl, as he thinks it should have gone to a trans actor.

That's another issue, surely it's called 'acting' Eddie?

He has affirmed that TWAW and they 'just want to live their lives out peacefully and it's time to allow them to do so'.

So no-ones being harassed out of their jobs then Eddie? Children aren't being medicalised? Women aren't being told to shut up and be kind, and allow men into their safe and private spaces?

What makes a bloke like Eddie think he has any right to an opinion in something that does not affect him, just because he put on a dress and some lipstick for a role that he now regrets?

There is a whole world of difference surprised you do t see that.[/quote]
Can you give some examples? Because I can't see any difference. Many thanks.

Kanaloa · 23/11/2021 07:36

@Shedmistress

Well isn’t it sort of the opposite? So a woman who identifies as a man shouldn’t be allowed to play this character - surely if TWAW only a woman can play this character as Lili is a woman. So only a female actress should have had the part.

Kanaloa · 23/11/2021 07:37

Either way Eddie could have cleared it up much better than he did.

Oh, really? Can you describe it for me? I was always rubbish at spot the difference!

Shelagh Fogerty is talking about Eddie and the wider issues this afternoon on LBC

@Ozgirl75

I saw an interview with Kristin Stewart who said that she was cautious about the whole “gay roles should be played by gay actors” as she said that she wasn’t prepared to limit her roles to those where the character happened to be gay. It made me really warm to her that she had grasped the idea of actors being people who pretended to be someone else. I kind of get where Russell Davis is coming from in that he finds the idea of a straight person acting stereotypically “gay” was distasteful but I just think “well, don’t write characters that are stereotypically gay then”. I loved It’s a Sin but I didn’t find the more flamboyantly gay characters like Roscoe more believably gay than Ash or Colin, because I’m aware enough to appreciate that people have different characters and there isn’t a set of behaviours that signifies “gay”. Some gay people will be school teachers and accountants and some will like dressing in sequinned waistcoats and wearing make up. It seems an odd thing to describe someone as “acting gay” - like it’s a costume you can put on.
I completely agree. It's sort of boxing yourself into a corner to talk about 'acting gay'.

This isn't the point, but what character was Ash? I can't remember anyone by that name.

When I first heard this idea the first film I thought of was love is strange.

I was thinking of the boys characters that the audience are supposed to assume are a gay couple, just not out yet.

Charlie Tahan was 15/16 I think when he played that role.

Why would anyone expect a child to be out as gay to play a gay character? That’s really creepy.

If it’s about taking parts away from actors who haven’t enjoyed his privilege, he should really restrict himself to playing characters who went to Eton.

Enough4me · 23/11/2021 15:01

I don't see the issue as He was a man in a dress acting as a man in a dress. If a woman had taken the role and pretended to be a man in a dress that would have been wrong, because women cannot be TW only TWATW aka men.

If he truthfully believes that and regrets it, then he could donate the entire amount he/she/furry earned from acting in that role. Also, as he believes that TWAW, then he could give it to a charity that supports women such as Lumos (the one supported by JK Rowling).

I hope people like him/her/furry, who are so magnificently virtue signalling are married to a TW or TM, as it may be transphobic if he/she/furry is not. His/her/furry public statements could be the equivalent of greenwashing. Put his/her/furry money and ER's relationships where his mouth is, or many may think he is transphobic.

Pronouns are now not a shortcut. You may as well use personal names the whole time.

Cailleach1 · 23/11/2021 15:12

And yes, restrict ER's future roles to his own particular box. Fortunate person who has had every advantage provided for him. And spinelessly joins in with the biblical mob like condemnation of a woman for not bowing down to entitled men's wish for privilege over the rights of women and children. In my personal opinion, of course.

The time I wasted watching the Danish Girl is time I'll never get back. rubbish actor, too. And irritating to watch ER's infantile, come hither simpering as a woman child

RedCarpetRebellion · 23/11/2021 15:27

I wonder why he isn’t apologetic for playing a disabled rapist in hick?

merrymouse · 23/11/2021 17:15

Let’s hope the Crown continues for a few years, because I think he is pretty much limited to playing Prince William.

Cailleach1 · 23/11/2021 17:20

Is ER a prince, merry? It is against his principles if he identifies as having any otherwise.

He is a rubbish actor. But to be fair to him he simpers in everything. I was grateful I knew all the words to Les Mis because even in the cinema I was wishing there were subtitles.

I think he thinks that sort of whispering/whimpering every line gives him an incredibly tender and vulnerable attitude but I actually find it very annoying.

bellinisurge · 23/11/2021 17:32

Happy to take the place of a disabled actor to play Stephen Hawking.

Soubriquet · 23/11/2021 17:42

Oh fuck the fuck off Eddie

I liked you in fantastic beasts but that’s it.

You don’t have the monopoly on women’s rights just because you “played one”

I think he is limited

His acting skills are minimal.

(He is a convincing rapist in hick though, even though his limp is not convincing at all)

rookiemere · 23/11/2021 17:54

I have to say ER was amazing in the stage production of Cabaret that I was lucky enough to see last week. Never saw Danish Girl as the concept of the film wasn't of interest to me, but it does sound like he's talking tripe.

merrymouse · 23/11/2021 18:06

To be fair princes are under represented in the acting world and Redmayne could be taking a job from one of them, so we are back to square one again.
Ozgirl75 · 23/11/2021 19:44

@IntermittentParps Ash Mukhergee was the Indian school teacher - the tall good looking one who has an on/off relationship with Ritchie. He’s the one who gets him to shower before he (ahem) continues with a bottom based sex act!

IntermittentParps · 24/11/2021 09:05

Ah yes, thank you, Ozgirl75

at 'bottom based sex act'

MistyGreenAndBlue · 24/11/2021 11:13

@Cordyceps

Many posters on this thread remind me of people who respond to a Black actor playing a historical role (like recently when a Black woman played Anne Boleyn) by saying something along the lines of "imagine if a WHITE man played MLK Jr!" as if everything including racial justice and fairness always works exactly the same in reverse. It's childish and it lacks nuance.
But Anne Boleyn WASN'T black. I'm sure there are many interesting historical figures who were though. How about making a film about them? More to the point, I would have thought.
