He's come out as saying that he regrets taking the part of Lili Elbe in the Danish Girl, as he thinks it should have gone to a trans actor.

That's another issue, surely it's called 'acting' Eddie?

He has affirmed that TWAW and they 'just want to live their lives out peacefully and it's time to allow them to do so'.

So no-ones being harassed out of their jobs then Eddie? Children aren't being medicalised? Women aren't being told to shut up and be kind, and allow men into their safe and private spaces?

What makes a bloke like Eddie think he has any right to an opinion in something that does not affect him, just because he put on a dress and some lipstick for a role that he now regrets?

Eyesofdisarray · 22/11/2021 14:04

He should have thought of that before he took the part
Maybe someone has got to him? Or has he decided to be kind now?

It's stupid, but it's the logical conclusion of tying acting to identity characteristics in other areas like race, along with the concept of cultural appropriation.

As soon as you do it with one identity area it logically follows that others are problematic too.

LaetitiaASD · 22/11/2021 14:49

@LadyCampanulaTottington

It's called acting. People pretending to be people they're not.

Not that difficult is it, Eddie?

Interesting... is Redmayne saying that people should not pretend to be something they're not, even when they are literally acting, which is the literal job of pretending to be something they're not?

If even actors shoudn't pretend to be something that they're not, then how on earth is it OK for normal men on the street to pretend to be something they're not? Surely that much be much worse than what Redmayne did?

@rabbitwoman

As a even further aside, it does irritate the heck out of me that the Cheery character is being held up as a trans icon. Nowhere in the books does it say or even imply that Cheery considered herelf a male dwarf and then decided or realised she was female when she moved to AM. All she did was start wearng some things that were culturally worn by human females but considered inappropriate by the dwarf community.

..... Even more off to the side, I would not have minded the 2021 ideas so much if it hadn't turned out to be such a mangling of a fine piece of writing.....

And did you notice, it was ALWAYS cheery who saved the day? Hmmmm.....

....off in the far distance and merely waving at the original thread....

A friend who is also a TP fan watched The Watch before I did and said to see it as 'inspired by' TP's novels rather than expecting a direct adaptation, which I thought was good advice. I got a bit bored of it towards the end tbh, but I think I was finding it hard work to not be comparing the characters, plot and sequence of events to the books the whole time, so didn't really clock that Cheery was the hero.

WomenTalkingAboutARevolution · 22/11/2021 15:07

He should regret taking part in a movie that romanticises the murder of one possibly two women to supply Elbe with ovaries, Fallopian tubes and a uterus*

Why do men never ever wonder what happened to the women whose organs were harvested for Elbe?

  • At the time transplants were from living individuals and one assumes they used women with viable reproductive systems. Also at the time most women died from hysterectomies and they were usually carried out without anaesthetic It was also recognised in this time period that healthy ovaries should not be removed from women except as a (very) last resort for disease as they are necessary for healthy functioning of female bodies

“Ghostsintheshelf

At least we know he wasn't appropriating when he he took the part of hypocritical, sexist Angel Clare in Tess of the d'Urbervilles.“

Yes smug, self- righteous Angel Clare.

He is evidently doing the amalgamated trans fender plus Critical Race Theory intersectional pick me dance. White actors shouldn’t black up for Othello…. so a an actor shouldn’t pretend to be transgender man transitioning to be a woman.

But it would be ok for a man to say he is in fact a woman.

GreyhoundG1rl · 22/11/2021 16:07

BUT wouldn't this also mean that trans actors would not be allowed to play non trans parts? I bet it doesn't mean that....
No, you can bloody bet it doesn't...

ScrollingLeaves · 22/11/2021 16:33

I have just been looking up the real Lili Elbe and it seems possible she was someone who was born with a DSD - she was found to have shrunken ovaries in one operation. Apparently there is a rate DSD where a person, usually female, has both testicular and ovarian tissue. Lili Elbe might have been female from the start. Apparently even as a man she was taken as a girl dressed as a man.

So a trans woman may not necessarily be right for the part.

Larryyourwaiter · 22/11/2021 16:35

The film wouldn’t have gotten made though. Eddie is a ‘name’ and the funding will have come through on the basis of that. There are no trans actors who bring in enough of a following and money with them.
It’s all very well saying who else should have been cast, but there are economic reasons for casting, it’s why Andi McDowall was in 4 Weddings, she brought the money, but wasn’t right.

The reports of them being a sufferer of a DSD have never been confirmed. The information, that they had 'rudimentary ovaries' comes from an account written by Elbe themselves and was never verified. Most historians think they had Klinefelter Syndrome, which is a DSD that males suffer from.

Does Eddie izzard still play male parts when in boy mode although generally she/her now?

Rightsraptor · 22/11/2021 17:01

@weverly you asked at 12.58 if male staff should not work in women's prisons, if I understood correctly.

Rhonda Hotchkiss, who was governor of Cornton Vale women's prison in Scotland, once said she'd expected the women would say 'no male staff' when they were asked for their views. But no, lots of them liked the men and, as Rhona said, those men were often the only good, decent men the women had ever met. Shocking, isn't it?

Oh yes, when there's a male role for which Eddie I may get paid more, he/she is there with bells on. Well, trousers on.
Santastuckincustoms · 22/11/2021 17:12

Wait, didn't he get an Oscar for playing Steven hawking? So he presumably doesn't have a problem appropriating disabled people then?

No, and as others have pointed out, appropriating French people, WW1 soldiers, people with magic powers, people from the 19th century, or er, aliens Grin

HereticFanjo · 22/11/2021 17:28

@MissMinutes24

Rich, posh, white, Old Etonian man Eddie doesn't see a problem. I'm shocked.
This.
Kanaloa · 22/11/2021 17:29

He’s also played a man in a wheelchair when he can walk. And a wizard when (to my knowledge) he isn’t magic. And the lead in a musical when he can barely enunciate his words much less sing.

I suppose he could give back the money he was paid for playing the character in the Danish Girl. Personally I didn’t like the movie and felt it was so long and dull.

Kanaloa · 22/11/2021 17:32

Although I do remember getting into a disagreement with a friend who said she thought that in movies like Brokeback Mountain the gay characters should be played only by gay actors.

I questioned wouldn’t that actually disadvantage many gay actors, especially in the theatres, if they could only play gay roles? Then where does it stop? David Tennant can only play Scottish people? Nobody in Cobra Kai can be in Cobra Kai unless they’re a black belt karate tournament winner?

That’s more a documentary than acting then. The whole point of acting is that you’re pretending to be someone or something else other than you are/often very different than you are.

ittakes2 · 22/11/2021 17:38

ArabellaScott - you reinforced my point - who gets to decide who is allowed to have an opinion or not? We are all humans and naturally form opinions subconsiously.... if there is guidance somewhere on who is allowed to express their opinions and who is not - can you please post this maybe it should go in a mumsnet rule book somewhere.

Gastonia · 22/11/2021 17:41

The story's on the bbc website
www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-59373295

I thought it interesting that the bbc article shoehorned in the following sentence...
The Danish Girl was released months after Redmayne won the Oscar for best actor for playing Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Grin

Honestly embarrassing. It’s like any power of logical thinking just falls out of people’s heads or something.

Did anyone see Bohemian Rhapsody when it was in cinemas? You know NONE of those men were actually the real members of Queen Shock

Sundaydance · 22/11/2021 17:49

Such a terrible film. His wife was relegated to the role of cheerleader to the husband who was blowing up her life.

I give no shits what the posh boy thinks, if he thinks at all.
