Students and staff demand their vice-chancellor and senior employees to include preferred pronouns:

After all this time, I still have trouble believing these people are for real.

Grumpyosaurus · 30/10/2021 07:43

Yes, obviously the biggest social issues of the day will be cured by forcing people to include their bloody pronouns.

WTF are they on? Haven't they got anything better to do?

Igneococcus · 30/10/2021 07:48

I know, it just all seems so mad.

I guess they feel a bit jealous of the students at other universities who have got real-life "TERF professors" to hound.

Kind of feel a bit sorry for them - they're struggling to get any real kudos for their contribution to the trans liberation struggle, and are reduced to this.

FreeBritnee · 30/10/2021 07:50

Why is this THE thing that’s causing so much mania? If it was climate change I’d completely understand, but fucking pronouns again. I honestly don’t understand.

libertine80 · 30/10/2021 07:54

My old uni. I often wonder what my old tutor Katrina Honeyman would have made of it all as she wrote about feminist working class history in the same vein as Selina Todd. Unfortunately she passed away in 2011 so we will never know. I credit her for much of my feminism alongside my mum.

include our VC showing her support for the trans community by using pronouns in her email signature,

Weird how the students are using "her" when apparently their VC hasn't announced their pronouns. Could they be misgendering their VC or are they using sex-based pronouns which shows the VC didn't need to announce them?

However do these people function in life.

If itbwas anything other than pronouns we'd tell them to stop being so self obsessed and demanding. We'd never in a million years think we were doing them any favours what so ever by indulging the paranoia that everyone is out to get them.

If people were confident in their life choices and decisions they'd not need the validation ajd recognition of others. How self absorbed do you have to he to think that's someone's role in life. To validate you. Did you ask? Do you have their consent for their responsibility for your health that you have planted in them without asking?

Its such a privileged position to be in. To have so little going on in your life that you even have time to invest in harassing people over pronouns.

Take the pronouns out of it. Look at the behaviour.

Is it acceptable.

No.

Lowhum · 30/10/2021 08:10

It will never be enough. Once everyone uses pronouns what is to stop demands for adding your race or relationship status?
It might sound far fetched, but I would have laughed 5 years ago if someone told me to declare my pronouns.

Concerns were raised over people being misgendered by colleagues who, in some cases had not apologised before being asked.

I don't fully understand this. Is this a case where person A used a pronoun to person B; person B corrected person A as that pronoun is not the one person B prefers; person A used the preferred pronoun and continued; person B wanted an apology so then asked person A to apologise for the previous use of the not-preferred pronoun; person A apologised; person B and allies are now raising this as a concern?

SpidersAreShitheads · 30/10/2021 08:18

To offer a completely different approach on it, there are many in the trans community who are opposed to enforced declaration of pronouns as it forces them to come out sooner than they may be comfortable with.

So, if the fact that gender woo is absolute bollocks isn't a sufficient reason, that's another angle to consider.

JustcameoutGC · 30/10/2021 08:18

@JustcameoutGC I don't know why MN have deleted your post, but yes, that summed it up succinctly yet perfectly.

Chilling bit of video, @NecessaryScene all those politicians!! All spouting the same sh*t.

I think that you are right on the money using the word mania. Hysteria is another good word. Mass hysteria. A wave of misplaced blind sympathy.

Like after Princess Diana died. I just googled Mass Hysteria and there are loads of examples, not just the Salem witch trials. It's a Thing.

Yogyakarta Priniciple 6f supports that this should not be enforced for similar concerns.

Ensure the right of all persons ordinarily to choose when, to whom and how to disclose information pertaining to their sexual orientation or gender identity, and protect all persons from arbitrary or unwanted disclosure, or threat of disclosure of such information by others.

“Preferred” pronouns, is it?

I don’t think these people have any interest in my “preferred” anything. I don’t suppose I’d be allowed to say I prefer they just fucked off with their compelled speech, would I?

TeamRex · 30/10/2021 08:31

We should argue against this because it's nonsense and compelled speech, not because it's against the Yogyakarta Priniciples. Do we think the rest of the principles are sensible?

Hmm - are you envisaging more truthful email sigs that state:

My compelled pronoun declaration ?

I find that I would have to dissent from any compulsion towards this.
