Girls night in Campaign targeted for not being inclusive

Theeyeballsinthesky · 23/10/2021 06:54

A group of young women started a campaign to boycott night clubs in the wake of drinks being spiked & women being attacked

The outcome was of course predictable, because heaven forbid women have something of their own

I am apoplectic with rage on behalf of these young women. Only yesterday there were a ton of reports on young womens poor mental health. Do they really not join the fucking dots

Are the people spiking drinks being intersectional, or are they targeting a specific demographic?

Mybalconyiscracking · 23/10/2021 07:03

Words literally fail me..

WhatyoutalkingaboutWillis · 23/10/2021 07:05

What wankers for caving in!!

LizzieSiddal · 23/10/2021 07:09

I’m so angry! I listened to the young woman who started this campaign being interviewed on R4 and thought If feminism is in the hands of women like her, it will be ok. I expect she’s been hounded!

JustcameoutGC · 23/10/2021 07:11

Anti carceral? So what will they want done with the men who are spiking the drinks then? Give them a good talking to?

IsleofRum · 23/10/2021 07:25

I listened to an interview a few afternoons ago on radio Scotland I think. I think the head of Edinburgh University Feminists society. Valid points about the alleged incidents but let down by her suggestions. We cannot have body searches because that would upset other races and vulnerable people (why if all are searched?) So let's search people's bags. Yes men hide needles and knives in their handbags. Oh and professional counsellors and safety Marshalls. No security staff as that could be authoritarian and oppressive....
A lot of hot air and nothing to show. Great!

WeeBisom · 23/10/2021 07:25

This is absolute nonsense. Intersectionality is supposed to be a theoretical tool in which feminists consider the impact of intersecting oppressions. It’s original use was in the employment context: a black woman may be discriminated against as a black woman and not just because she is a woman or because she is black. It’s both at the same time. And this oppression is different from purely sexual or racial oppression. Intersectionality was supposed to be a reminder to watch out for and be mindful of complex overlapping oppressions.

So how has it warped into this monster today where women can’t address female only concerns but have to include everybody? This was never the point of intersectionality! In this case it is clear that the only people who have been targeted are young women by men. There is not much complex interweaving oppression going on. The men don’t appear to be also targeting trans women. The idea of being inclusive makes absolutely no sense when the oppression itself is not inclusive! And it just gives the impression that women cannot campaign for their own interests ever but must also include every other potential theoretical victim. This is all lives matter on steroids.

And the anti carcaral feminist stuff is surely crap. They have just included this because it’s a fashionable phrase. I cannot believe these young women do not want the men to be criminalised and punished by the police.

From the sounds of it, the only thing the men will receive is an apology for being put in a position where they had to spike women's drinks. Perhaps there will be a whip round to pay for their expenses.
Wildfart · 23/10/2021 07:28

They all speak in a completely identical script once the idiotic students of safe space nonsense get hold of them.

What a cheerless night in. A bunch of tedious bores monitoring everything you say.

WarriorN · 23/10/2021 07:30

I saw another group critiquing them yesterday and was furious:

Say it loud is run by mostly university students.

If not heard of either group but one picking on the other for points is ridiculous.

Bs.

It's a real mystery isn't it
WarriorN · 23/10/2021 07:33

The irony of describing full body checks as distressing when "inclusive" policies are vulnerable abused women being placed with males in prison or refuges or hospitals.

LizzieSiddal · 23/10/2021 07:38

They’ve just given more ammunition to the media too. Can you imagine the number of articles this nonsense will generate? The media will now focus on this group being hounded into changing a name which a fantastic, easily understood campaign into what?

MamsellMarie · 23/10/2021 07:39

....mainly the uni rugby team (male) I believe, prop forwards in particular.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/10/2021 07:40

FFS, though I did see this coming.

Maybe it will open some more eyes though? (Trying to be hopeful)

TBH I was never that sure about it in the first place. Is the best way to protest violence against women voluntarily removing women from life outside the home?

merrymouse · 23/10/2021 07:45

Their critique is pretty much 'All Lives Matter'.

Also very similar to right wing criticism of Covid restrictions.

Same arguments, different tribe.

MintMe · 23/10/2021 07:47

Surely this highlights, more than anything, that you cannot identify out of your sex class. It doesn't matter if you identify as non-binary, if you are very clearly a female sexed person, you are just as much at risk as your 'cis' friend.

DraintheBlood · 23/10/2021 07:47

Of course they do.

It’s called mis gendering.

That was your cis privilege talking.

SusannaRowan · 23/10/2021 07:49

This is what I was thinking, very Talibanesqe. Women you are not safe here, stay at home where you are safe.

For the people criticising this campaign due to lack of intersectionality, I have no words (actually I have plenty, but best not).

MamsellMarie · 23/10/2021 07:52

I think this drugging of women is very scary - imagine if they could just grab and inject you as you walk past on a street. Pretend you are drunk/ill put you in a car.
What are these drugs, where are they coming from, someone (Pritti) needs to come down hard on this.

merrymouse · 23/10/2021 07:53

I agree, but I assumed the idea was that bars and nightclubs would be forced into action to protect profits. What's not clear is what the bars and nightclubs are supposed to do, if they can't increase security. You are just left with women staying at home.

Glenthebattleostrich · 23/10/2021 07:54

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine this was my feeling too. Is the next event going to be 'Only Leave The House With A Male Relative Night?'

Even the news reports and media discussions have been depressingly familiar - Richard Madely asking what a woman had done to stop her drink being spiked, others implying that its women's fault for leaving home in possession of a vagina.

Spiking drinks was an issue when I went to clubs 25 years ago. The fact we are still dealing with this shit is infuriating and depressing.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 23/10/2021 07:57

These poor young women - and young men. Being on the receiving end of all this crap. Having to self censor every word - even when facing assault and abuse. Having to advocate for "anti carceral" bullshit that would allow every rapist, paedophile and abuser to walk free for ever?

It's enraging and terrifying in equal measures to watch young women being silenced, frightened and intimidated - harangued and pushed out of the public space.

Bellendejour · 23/10/2021 07:58

Christ’s SAKE.

I’m actually really fucking hitting a wall with all this today.
