Girls night in Campaign targeted for not being inclusive

Theeyeballsinthesky · 23/10/2021 06:54

A group of young women started a campaign to boycott night clubs in the wake of drinks being spiked & women being attacked

The outcome was of course predictable, because heaven forbid women have something of their own

I am apoplectic with rage on behalf of these young women. Only yesterday there were a ton of reports on young womens poor mental health. Do they really not join the fucking dots

Girls night in Campaign targeted for not being inclusive

@MintMe

Surely this highlights, more than anything, that you cannot identify out of your sex class. It doesn't matter if you identify as non-binary, if you are very clearly a female sexed person, you are just as much at risk as your 'cis' friend.
Isn’t that their point? Girls, women and transmen are at risk of drink spiking. So their campaign includes ’girls who don’t identify as girls but are recognized by others as girls and could be targets too so might like a night in anyway’, which is a bit too long for a slogan.
Mrsjamin · 23/10/2021 08:05

What is wrong with these young women? They just have no idea that they are being victims because of their sex. Their perpetrators have no idea how they identify when they slip something into their drinks but they sure as hell can tell that they are female. I filled out an online survey the other day by an MA student looking into feelings of safety in public spaces and she asked only one question on sex/gender which was how do you identify. Of course I went on a big rant about the fact that women are more vulnerable because of our sex and nothing to do with how we identify. And that I didn't have a gender identity thank you very much. We have done our young women a disservice not to tell them they need feminism because of their sex. Sigh.

@MamsellMarie

I think this drugging of women is very scary - imagine if they could just grab and inject you as you walk past on a street. Pretend you are drunk/ill put you in a car. What are these drugs, where are they coming from, someone (Pritti) needs to come down hard on this.
If you read the recent news reports it’s clear that the spiking by injection part of the story has been very overblown. It’s simply not that easy to inject someone. Spiking via drinks is what is happening together with the possibility there have been a few cases of needle attacks to cause intimidation rather than actual injections of drugs.
LizzieSiddal · 23/10/2021 08:07

What's not clear is what the bars and nightclubs are supposed to do, if they can't increase security. You are just left with women staying at home.

The woman who organised this campaign said initially she’d contacted all the nightclubs in her university City and very few had even bothered to get back to her, the rest said they could not do anything. That’s when they came up with the boycotting idea. They want the clubs to use tops&straws on all drinks, more CCTV, and more training for staff so they didn’t automatically think women were just drunk, when they collapsed in clubs. Pretty basic things really!

BraveBananaBadge · 23/10/2021 08:17

That is absolutely shameful. Who would look at what this - clearly named - campaign is all about and immediately condemn and bully them for not being inclusive enough of those who face "more violence". To make them feel obliged to say they are "anti-carceral" in the face of some of the most brutal crimes women can be victim of? Oh and "pro-sex work" as well because of course. This is just hateful.

WeeBisom · 23/10/2021 08:21

The depressing thing about all this is how these women are lacking a robust feminist analysis. Feminism explains what is happening and why. Men are spiking women out of sexual entitlement and to intimidate the female sex. But instead we now have some garbled crap about people attacking all people in general, which blurs the focus of what is really going on here. And we can’t actually do anything like increased searches or body pat downs in case this offends or hurts someone else’s feelings. Women aren’t being allowed to prioritise themselves and putting everyone else’s needs first is regarded as a virtue. I’m just so despairing about this - I feel we have gone backwards. In the second wave women could point to misogynistic behaviour and say “this is totally unacceptable” and demand it to be criminalised. Now … it’s like women don’t have even know how to stick up for themselves.

littlbrowndog · 23/10/2021 08:23

Durham night in sounds like a zoom quiz

And will have to google anti carceral

They didn’t mention being anti ageist

🤷‍♀️

Helleofabore · 23/10/2021 08:28

I understand this is a call to temporarily boycott venues and is not to tell women they cannot go out without a male companion. It was to be a means to try to create a level of safety by showing venues that women are customers worthy of being listened to.

Misaimed iniative? maybe. I would think it could work though.

However, the bullying this group have received is to be abhorred. And that list of attributes to prove inclusivity? Ridiculous. Anti-carceral? Fuck off. Young women will end up with nothing but pleading for males to be respectful to them and will glow with the knowledge they were at least ‘kind’.

tricervixtops · 23/10/2021 08:29

This has given me the absolute rage.

Regardless of whether the protest was the best way forward or not, how fucking dare they make it all about them and distract from the real problem.

We can't even assume the organisers want to cave to this nonsense, it takes great courage to stand up and say NO, and lots of women will be worried about the consequences of doing so.

mustlovegin · 23/10/2021 08:39

we felt that adding more security checks could potentially add more violence and be weaponised against marginalised communities

What is this madness? Nobody in their right mind would attend a venue without security in place!

Next time they will try to 'campaign' against security at airports because it could 'marginalise' some. This is insane!

Blessex · 23/10/2021 08:40

Yep. I am getting really down about all this now. How can people not see that All Lives Matter is not acceptable for black people but game on for women. That black fishing is not acceptable (self identifying as a different ethnicity) but game on for women. WHY CANT PEOPLE SEE THIS.

mustlovegin · 23/10/2021 08:41

it takes great courage to stand up and say NO

But it's a girls night in. Nobody would deplatform them in their own homes. This is all getting very muddled indeed

Theeyeballsinthesky · 23/10/2021 08:45

Yes funny how it never ever does include being anti ageist isn’t it?

Speaks volumes that doesn’t it

Deliriumoftheendless · 23/10/2021 08:46

To be fair I think I’d feel pretty distressed if I was carrying drugs with the intent of incapacitating for the purpose of rape and I knew I was going to be searched.

huge eye roll

sashagabadon · 23/10/2021 08:50

That’s the muddle left wing politics is in at the moment and why no one (sane) votes for it on Election Day.
Young women can’t ask for help to protect them as they are not allowed to identify that women get affected by this and that one of the answers is more security/ police as left wing politics want to “defund the police”
This is where that statement leads.

Stopsnowing · 23/10/2021 08:50

So girls can’t even have a night in now?

tricervixtops · 23/10/2021 08:51

@mustlovegin I meant say NO they're not going to change their name, change their platform.

Girls are seemingly not even allowed a night in anymore. Angry

Whitefire · 23/10/2021 08:51

This is just beyond ridiculous. Gah I can't even form words about it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/10/2021 08:51

"Anti carceral" is where feminists get guilt tripped that it's wrong to want to send rapists to prison.

littlbrowndog · 23/10/2021 08:52

Let’s all have a night in now.

They kinda don’t understand that a message or campaign has to be clear to get people behind your campaign

So your mates. Girls night in. Clear. And your mates might look at the campaign as it is clear who it’s for

Now. Durham night in

Mmmm

GoodieMoomin · 23/10/2021 08:53

Another one here in despair.

When will someone, anyone, have the courage to say "we've listened to the feedback that we've got this wrong and respectfully disagree. People who disagree with us are welcome to set up their own xyz thing, and we wish them luck."?!

littlbrowndog · 23/10/2021 08:53

Thanks erish. Did google and was word salads everywhere

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/10/2021 08:55

I agree that "Durham Night In" sounds like a zoom quiz Grin

Helleofabore · 23/10/2021 08:55

Reading this reminds me of posts over this week where posters posited that males should be taught to look after females better and to defend them in attacks. And that single sex spaces in India were the wrong response as it didn’t fix the problem (no hints as to how you might fix that problem though).

Completely oblivious that women and children need to be kept safe until the cultural changes, which could take decades, would take affect.

I have come to believe there are many very naive people out there.

Very few do it.

Soreen and some other advertisers on MN did.

And Sussex Uni did.

Sadly, not many come to mind.
